A Chinese delegation was last month sent to the plant of the Moscow Machine-building Production Association, a Russian engine manufacturer also known as Salyut or Salut, to discuss cooperation on the development of the engine for the Chengdu J-20, China's first stealth fighter, the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po reported on Nov. 11.

The visit of the Chinese delegation was first reported on Salyut's official website on Oct. 31. The delegation was led by Xu Qiliang, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, according to the company's website, and was accompanied by Sergey Shoigu, Russia's defense minister. Vladislav Masalov, the general director of Salyut, stressed the importance of Russia's cooperation with China in developing the new aircraft engine.

With the permission of the Russian government, Xu and his delegation was allowed to visit Salyut's workshop, engine testing facility, production line and museum. Back in 2005, representatives from Beijing signed a contract worth US$300 million with Salyut to purchase 100 AL-31FN engines. It was the largest sale for Rosoboronexport, the state intermediary agency for Russia's exports/imports of defense-related and dual use products, technologies and services, in 2005. By 2006, another contract was signed between Salyut and Shenyang Liming Aero-Engine Group Corporation to produce engines for Chinese aircraft.

As the Chengdu J-20 does not as yet have an adequate engine, it is believed by many experts in Russia that the fighter is likely to be equipped with the more advanced AL-31FM1. Wen Wei Po said that through investing with Russia in an engine plant, China will eventually gain the know-how it needs to design its own high-performance engines in the future. In turn, the trade and investments will help Russia's

It is oversized so powerful engines are required just to meet combat requirements.

meaning the aircrafts are too huge for the given engines ? j 20 seems to be huge compared to pak fa, 22 raptor and f 35.......

J-20 has similar dimensions to MiG 1.44 and that was designed to run on 176kn engines.

The Chinese cannot build a 5th gen engine before having successfully completed a 4th gen engine by going alone. So, they will need a partner for this.

Of course, if India has failed to get a contract for co-development through a tendering process, the Chinese won't fare any better in a single vendor process.

Hi saya

well chinese have achieved some progress in WS -10 A/B variants ,but designing & mass producing a 5th gen fighter engine with supercruise is a very different ball game al together .The chinese have realised it .If they have to induct J20 by 2016/ 2017 time frame they goona have to use russian engines as a stop gap measures
later they would switch to their indiginized ones after all usual reverse engineering those russians ones in the name of indigenized engines. after 2020

Russians also want to chinese to be dependent on them on their 5th gen fighter program ,as they would have a clout on their export progress of their stealth fighters , if they want to sell it for export

the problem is which engines are they interested for are they interested for stage 2 engine of PAK-FA or those engines which are currently powering Pak-fa or it would be a diffrent engine exclusively designed for J20.

but whatever it may be it is as usual not a good news for india

Re: Chinese delegation sent to Russia to discuss stealth fighter engin

There is no way Russia will even allow the export of Item 30 to China, let alone help them develop one.

A joint venture deal with Salyut may get them a decent AL-41 modded engine, probably at the level of PAKFA's early build engines, but 5th gen engines will still be out of reach for China if they are looking for Russia's technical support. But I suppose something is better than nothing if they want to see the J-20 successful.

It won't even get export clearance with PAKFA/FGFA within the next decade let alone getting export clearance for just the engine.

Anyway, Saturn was chosen for both the stage 1 (117) and stage 2 (Item 30) engines of PAKFA. Salyut has only some 20 or 30% input in the Item 30 engine according to their internal contract.

Salyut's competing engine for PAKFA won't be given export clearance, but the engine itself has nothing to do with India. China is looking at a deal with Salyut here.

Salyut is building other Flanker related engines like Al-31FM1 for Su-34 and more modern developments like AL-31FM3.

If China gets 100% TOT on Russian fighter engines then India should also try to get the same share. The question is how much money & investments the Russians will ask India.

Sukhoi has a history of selling the same planes to India and China (MKK and MKI)
anyway it will always be a good blackmail tool for the Russians for the future.

Last figures i read were 20-30 billion are being invested by India for PAKFA.
If Russians can make 5-7 billion on the side from China would they??

It is no different from US selling their fighters to Greece and Turkey or Israel and Egypt.

Just because we consider the Chinese an enemy doesn't mean the Russians consider the same.

Russia and India are not allies. So there is no compulsion for Russia to not sell to China.

The Russians have every right to sell to Pakistan too. Had India been as small as Pakistan, they would have sold to both sides. Just like the US selling to both sides in Europe and Middle East.

We don't own any of the IPR on Russian equipment on MKI.

Anyway MKK is a different airframe compared to MKI. MKI is more suited for air dominance missions while MKK is a strike aircraft.

.
There is a very strong false belief that su-50 is an exclusively India-Russian
venture. It is not China and Brazil may have their own export versions and others.
