Cheap labour still hasn't reduced the cost of building these HSRs. The 1000km of the Wuhan-Guangzhou line costs $17 billion. TGV lines cost $10-15 million per km so French costs are actually lower. You still dig HSR with picks and shovels to give people jobs instead of using excavation equipment like the rest of the world. When you stop building them with sweat and start using your head they will be cheaper to build.
haha, Arabians,Yankees and RUssian know more than you whether China HSR is more cheaper than France's .
as everybody knows, Frenchmen, German and Japanese are being ass-kicked by CHinese when bidding to the HS railway projects all over the world....hahaha.
Simens now has surrendered and to be little companions of CHinese companies.

China's high speed trains travel at 328 km/h and they are 122 km/h faster than slower French high speed trains, which move at only 206 km/h. However, that is no excuse for a French to troll my thread.

Beats me. I thought the article would be interesting to show that China has to build her high speed rail network now. At the rates that labor wages are increasing (e.g. 20 to 30%), I don't think China can afford to build a high speed rail network in 10 to 20 years.

However, China's airlines are feeling the pressure from the high-speed-rail (i.e. HSR) industry. Many airline routes have been terminated when a new HSR line is opened.

By 2012, China would have more than 13,000 km of high-speed railway, Xinhua said.

"By then, 60 percent of China's domestic air market will be affected by the high-speed railways," Liu Chaoyong, general manager of China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS) (0670.HK), was quoted as saying.

China Eastern last year agreed to sell 35 percent of Joy Air, in which it held 40 percent, to state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China."

I am asking this because the cost realisation of these projects take 20 to 30 years. DMRC ( Delhi metro) still runs on loss. So unless the cost can be realised , this project is nothing more than a show off. I would prefer airlines for such large distance.

when the trip is shorter than 1000 KMs,HSR is much more attractive than air flight.

VIP tickets costs 700 RMB(about 105 USD) .ordinary tickets cost 500 RMB(75USD).
So it is equivalent to airlines cost in India from Delhi to Mumbai(same distance).
How much did this project cost ?

about 116.6 billion RMB(17 billion USD)/1068 KM ,that is ,109M(16M USD)/KM

By the way Armand2REP, it doesn't matter how much you try to talk up France and slander China. Everyone has seen China's spacewalk. Unless you can show a video of a French spacewalk, no one will consider France to be on a par with China.

Why would you compare 80s TGV lines to China? Obviously CCP propaganda. The TGV-Est line travels an average of 320 km/h with a top speed of 515 km/h. The TGV holds the land record at 575 km/h. The only reason Chinese trains are able to achieve a high speed is because CCP will wipe out entire villages to set a straight track... Europeans are not willing to destroy the countryside to make a few minutes in a trip.

Siemens no longer intends to bid for the supply of trains and equipment for the $US7bn second phase of China's Haramain high-speed rail project. Instead it is to join a Chinese consortium bidding for the work. Siemens will provide signalling and electrification equipment to the consortium, which includes the Beijing Railway Administration and China Railway Construction Corporation. During 2009, a Chinese consortium won a $1.8bn contract to build the first phase of the project. Alstom, Hyundai and Samsung are also bidding for the second phase of the project, the London Financial Times reports.

The high-speed railway between China's two most important metropolises was scheduled to open in 2012 but will now open one year ahead of time, said Zheng Jian, chief planner with the Ministry of Railways.

Wang Zhiguo, vice-minister of railways, said that it would be a four-hour journey from Beijing to Shanghai, and only three hours from Beijing to Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu province.

At present, it takes about 10 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai and Nanjing by train.

A new-generation bullet train that will travel up to 380 kilometers per hour (kph) is now under development for the high-speed rail link.

It will be rigorously tested this year, and engineers want the train to run at a top speed of 420 kph to guarantee a safe operational speed of 380 kph, Huang Qiang, chief researcher with the China Academy of Railway Sciences told the Beijing News.

Vice-Minister Wang Zhiguo said it was expected that high-speed trains would one day take passengers from Beijing to most capital cities within eight hours, except for Haikou, Urumqi, Lhasa and Taipei.

It is expected that an 110,000-km railway network will be completed by 2012, including 13,000 km of high-speed rail, he said.

China already has 6,552 km of rail track in operation - the longest amount of high-speed rail track in the world.

The ministry wants to export China's high-speed railway technology to North America, Europe and Latin America.

Wang said State-owned Chinese companies are already building high-speed lines in Turkey and Venezuela.

Many countries, including the United States, Russia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, have also expressed interest.

"China is willing to share its mature and advanced technology with other countries to promote development of the world's high-speed railways," he said.

The ministry has signed cooperation memos with California in the United States, as well as Russia and Brazil.

"We are organizing relevant companies to participate in bidding for US high-speed railways and prepare for bidding on a line in Brazil linking Rio de Janeiro with Sao Paulo," the vice-minister said.

The ministry introduced high-speed train technologies from France, Germany and Japan, while at the same time made its own innovations. It now owns 940 patents concerning high-speed railways, the ministry's chief engineer He Huawu said.

At present, at least 10,000 km of high-speed rail line is under construction in China. About 3,676 km of new track for running trains at speeds up to 350 kph have already been laid and put into operation. Another 2,876 km of old tracks have been upgraded to run trains of 200 to 250 kph.

Ultimately, China plans to construct a 120,000-km railway network, including 50,000-km of high-speed rail track, by 2020."

The great circle distance from Beijing Capital airport (PEK) to Shanghai Pudong (PVG) is 1098 kilometres, and while neither jets nor the soon to begin HS rail link will cover as short a distance in the real world, it is obvious that the train between China's capital and its largest city will be far preferable in space, comfort, data connectivity, convenience and total trip time for many of those who now fly between them.

Meanwhile, in Australia "¦"¦..look on in shame. We can't even get two of the world's smallest metropolitan railways to work effectively."

if you guys are interested in HSR, check out skyscrapercity (i am not promoting it here, but they do have a nice section for infrastructure besides tall buildings), they have relatively up-to-date info about HSR in many countries. of course you will get much more info on domestic forums for each country, but hey, you guys are talking about chinese rail network on an indian forum, aren't you?:D

there is a thread for china railway development, i cannot post links here so if you google 'china railway development news skyscrapercity' and click post 218503, you will see lots of pictures and updates. there are trolls too, but luckily the admins are doing quite a good job
