What are they going to name it? Hakka Noodles or Chowmein?

They can also use American Names like Kitty Hawk or Enterprise.... And then copy every move from movies and tv shows about how to act on aircraft carriers... just be careful and dont copy from Swat Cats by mistake....

quite a few years ago ,I have quoted our distinguished forum member's statement about the China Carrier development/Construction plan here on DFI...it's a 3-step long term plan :

Step 1. Continued construction of the Imported 'Varyag' STOBAR carrier----- Project Code : Type 001
Step 2.
the construction of CATOBAR Carrier / conventional power / steam Catapult / 68000-8000 tons displacement(normal and full)----Type 002
Step 3.
the Nuclear Powered CATOBAR carrier with EMALS

---------------
Step 1 has been accomplished --Continued construction of the Imported 'Varyag'

. in 2004, the central government approved the plan
. in Apr 2005, the pre-construction work began
. in Dec 2008, the continued construction started in the dry dock .
. in March 2010 , it was launched and outfitting and port test began later
. in Sep 2014. it was commissioned.

it took 8 years...

and then ,the plan was marginally adjusted , another STOBAR Carrier was arranged and became the second CV(first home-made one) although PLAN strongly opposed. but central committee made the final decision and extra funds for this project was arranged besides the yearly Navy share of defense budget. the money might came from the Central government reservation savings...it might be called as Step 1.5

. around in 2010, the decision was maded
. in Novenber 2013 , the construction began
. in March 2015, the final assembly inside the dry dock began
. in April 2017, the ship was launched.
. and in 2019 (around Novenber) , it will be commissioned..

it will take 6 years/72 months

-------------------
before the Launch , loads of civilian came to watch the event closely on the Plaza of Dalian coastal park. quite some came from other cities far away...lol

two wonderful shots fresh released by our distinguished Aviation photographer- WM...lol..

the second day after the launch...the dry dock is emptied again , another assemly of vessel will begin soon...don't worry , it is a commercial ship next....lol

and the famous commercial Satellite Image provider -Digital Globe couldn't wait for publishing something as an timely AD.....LOL...

continued...
-------------------------

and Step 2 has begun as well. this would be a CATOBAR Carrier / conventional power / steam Catapult / 68000-8000 tons displacement(normal and full)...and it is constructed in East China, and another one might be constructed in Dalian Shipyard where the two STOBAR carrier were constructed. this is Type 002... If there is no accident, around in 2023, it would be ready for commission. the construction period should be around 6-7 years...

Mock-up aircraft carrier in Wuhan undergoing modification for 002
new bridge would have new Gen dual-band AESA radar( but the big array is for searching, the small one might be for ESM/ECM)..BTW this mock-up has been changed for three times to test the electromagnetic compatibility of Type 001/001A/002 bridge layout

J-15A catapult compatible fighter

and the Land test of steam catapults

Step 3 is also on the way, the final design haven't been frozen yet...we won't see it before the 2025

----------
the EMALS is also ready , and recent image shows the test has also begun...

above: steam
below: electromagnetic

No detailed information in public news, but not difficult to figure it out。

1 Propulsion:4 TB-12 steam turbines,8 boilers, the same as LIAONING carriers's. With nuclear power as ultimate aim,it is an easier, quicker and cheaper choice than the gas turbines powering 052C/052D destroyers.Basically the same boat, why bother to use different propulsion system?

2 Radar:AESA,probably the same as 052D destroyer's.

a correction here: it was in Sep 2012 that CV-16 Liaoning was commissioned...
sorry about that

normally a PLAAF CBG consists of 10 vessels...

1. Aircraft Carrier
2. Air Defence Destroyer × 2 (Type 055,052D,052C,051C)
3. General-Purpose Destroyer × 2 ( Type 052 052B ,even 052C/D when 055 comes)
4. ASW Frigate × 2 (Type 054A or replaced by 052 serial DDG)
5. SSN × 2
6. AOE- Fast Combat Support Ship

in this pic, the 071 LPD played the AOE as a guest player

timg.jpg

------------------------

so far these elements of CBG are shaping orderly...

Type 055---for the first time ever, PLAN had 4 vessels of a New class under construction simultaneously as the launch batch ... two shipyards in North and East China are working on two Type 055 DDG each, interesting thing is : one is constructing the hull in series, the other parallelly due to their usual practice and facilities limitation...it is well known large air defense Destroyer at around 12000 tons full displacement. the first of this batch will be launched very soon, and then we will see the whole picture of this important class of fighting vessel for PLAN . the amount is already enough for two CBGs in the future.

Type 901 AOE- Fast Combat Support Ship-- the first of this class was launched around 18 months ago. two rounds of Sea trails have been done, so it will be commissioned soon as well. around 40000 tons displacement is double size of the current 903 serial replenishing ships in service...BTW, the second of this class was just launched for the coming two CBGs

a special class of so called Navy "luxurious cruises" was arranged for the Carrier project..LOL...normally the crew team would be formed during the construction period and stationed into the shipyard before the sea trial...so an Accommodation ship is planned...of course, this ship would act as other roles.

this is the second of this class, the Pennant number might be 89... it should be ready soon and heading North later。

her sister ship ---PLAN 88 Xuxiake often appeared along side CV-16 Liaoning.. soon we might see such similar scene again

dozens of 052 serial DDG and 054A frigates are existing mighty. and the force under-water is something sensitive which I always intend to avoid talking about ...lol...but the in-service SSN number is definitely sufficient ...

.ENGINE ON.---it seems that the dock trial has begun and the check/test of power system is always the first and import item of this phase. another milestone achieved ...

---------------------
and some 'old' tidbits...

.PLANS 88 Xuxiake ...on the Commission day of CV-16 Liaoning in Sep 2012, a grand receptiona was held on her deck...

.Steam catapults Land training facility---even some UAVs also tried for a few times...

." Island tower" --- as I said, the Island on the "Land Aircraft Carrier" was transformed for some times to test the different layouts on Type001/001A/002...

."Module"--- an interesting experimental module appeared years ago in JN shipyard. obviously quite some special feature of a Carrier module appeared on it : Hangar , Flat-top, catapult notch...it is said that the inside of this module is well decorated and Air Conditioned ...nowadays it is open to public as a 'modern shipbuilding tech demonstration facility' within the shipyard .

.Type 901 AOE--- newly painted again, and she has arrived her home port waiting for the coming important commission ceremony .

LOL. It is just for fun.I dont think PLA navy will seriously name it Mantis shrimp.
It only tells the new carrier has a lot fans who also love mantis shrimp very much. Probably we can use it as a nickname. We use nickname to build some connection between us and those we named. Here is some examples:

Y-20:Chubby girl. the designer really dont like this nickname.

Jessica Chastain:role model of working women. she loves it.

Chris hemsworth:hammer brother.

Kim Jong-un: Kim fatty the third.

Basically we give something/someone a nickname because we like it(except Kim Jong-un).

Why all 50 cent comes with signature ' LOL ' .. ?
Why would a moderator call forum members of a specific nationality "50 centers"?

Post something relevant to the thread rather than race baiting Mr. Moderator.

Many congratulations.

I really hope to see the Chinese and Indian navies operate jointly against piracy, counter-terrorism and threats at high seas of Asia some day.

Let's hope CV-17 and INS Vikrant II can be seen doing this. :)

Construction of China's 2nd Aircraft Carrier for PLAN Progressing Faster than Expected

Story originally published in French by our colleagues from East Pendulum
The construction of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) second aircraft carrier (the first built indigenously in China) is progressing at a good pace and is now ahead of schedule according to the program director. The information was revealed in an interview conducted by Chinese national television CCTV. The vessel was launched in April this year.

Program Director HU Wen Ming is also the CEO of the Chinese naval group CSIC, which owns the Dalian shipyard where the new aircraft carrier is under construction. HU says propulsion system tests are currently underway. The first and third boilers are already on, and the steam turbines will soon follow.

Dockside testing, one of the major milestones in the project with the Chinese aircraft carrier set to operate on its own generators, could start within the next month.

"It's earlier than we anticipated," says HU.

Once dockside tests are completed, the aircraft carrier will start its sea trials campaign. The compatibility of the ship with its air wing and the weapon systems are set to be tested and evaluated.

For the time being, no delivery date has been officially communicated by the PLAN, but East Pendulumbelieves that commissioning could happen during the second half of 2019.

In addition to the project's progress, the program director also revealed further details on the construction of the 2nd Chinese aircraft carrier.

For example, at the peak of the work, more than 5,000 technicians and engineers worked simultaneously on board the ship.

These men and women come from 532 different Chinese companies, of which 412 are not from the defense sector. The aircraft carrier's project not only accelerated the transfer of technology from military to civilian companies, enabling them to upgrade their range and capacity, but above all reinforced the level of civil-military integration of Chinese companies for other major projects ahead.

Studies of the flow of the aircraft carrier according to the roll level of the ship.

In addition, HU indicates that all Tier-1 components and materials are designed and manufactured in China, demonstrating the country's full capacity to launch and carry out this type of project in a fully autonomous manner.

Following the transformation of the former Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag into the Liaoning, and the construction of a new aircraft carrier of local design, the CEO of CSIC believes that Chinese manufacturers are now able to design and build "any type of aircraft carrier, thanks to the skills acquired so far and the pre-studies launched 20 years ago".

"The team with an average age of 36 is now mature," says HU.

China is actually planning to build a 3rd aircraft carrier (at least), this time in CATOBAR configuration but still with a conventional (non-nuclear) propulsion system.

Two catapult systems, one steam and the other electromagnetic, are currently being evaluated at the Xincheng Aircraft Training Center.

The Jiangnan Changxing Shipyard in Shanghai is also in the process of expanding its facilities to prepare for the launch of the project. First steel cut may have already taken place.

This 3rd aircraft carrier could join the Chinese Navy by 2022 to 2023, according to East Pendulum's latest estimate.

This article whilst a few weeks old does have interesting statistics on Civilian to military integration in Chinese shipbuilding and the defense sector in general.
