China warns Japan not to 'play with fire' in South China Sea

BEIJING: China on Thursday warned Japan against "playing with fire" in the contested waters of the South China Sea, after Tokyo announced it may patrol alongside the US in the region.

China also sent fighter planes for the first time over a strait near Japan on Monday as part of a group of more than 40 jets headed to train in the West Pacific.

The move followed remarks by Japanese defence minister Tomomi Inada this month that Tokyo would increase its engagement in the South China Sea through joint training with the US Navy, exercises with regional navies and capacity-building assistance to coastal nations.

The Chinese defence ministry said the aim of the announcement was "to mess up the South China Sea situation and try to gain interests from the troubled waters."

"If Japan wants to conduct any joint patrol or joint exercises in waters administered by China, it is just like playing with fire, and the Chinese military will not sit and watch," ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told a regular press briefing.

Beijing asserts sovereignty over almost all of the South China Sea, dismissing rival partial claims from its Southeast Asian neighbours. It rejects any intervention by Japan in the waterway.

In recent months Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has criticised China for rejecting a July ruling by an international tribunal, which said Beijing's extensive claims to the waters had no legal basis.

Tokyo, a key US ally, is also strengthening defence ties with other countries in the disputed region. Japan and China are already at loggerheads over a longstanding territorial row in the East China Sea.




That dispute relates to uninhabited islets controlled by Japan known as the Senkakus in Japanese and the Diaoyus in Chinese.

China’s PLA Navy has kicked off a combat drill in the international waters near the Sea of Japan on August 18, 2016. The missile destroyer Xi'an, missile frigate Hengshui, and supply ship Gaoyouhu forms a team to combat against PLA's East Sea Fleet.

The drill was held on the fleets' way back from the Rim of the Pacific 2016 (RIMPAC 2016) multinational naval exercise in Hawaii, the United States.

BEIJING – China told Japan on Friday to “get used to it” after it flew six warplanes over the Miyako Strait between two southern Japanese islands in a military exercise.

Japan’s defense ministry issued a statement late on Thursday describing the flyover by the formation of Xian H-6 bombers earlier that day as “unusual”, while noting that there had been no violation of Japanese airspace.

The Chinese navy and air force have in recent months carried out a series of exercises in the Western Pacific, as they hone their ability to operate far from their home shores.

The Chinese defense ministry said it was “legal and proper” for its military aircraft to operate in the airspace and that it would continue to organize regular training exercises according to “mission requirements”.


“The relevant side should not make a fuss about nothing or over-interpret, it will be fine once they get used to it,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Miyako Strait is between Japan’s islands of Miyako and Okinawa, to the northeast of self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said on Thursday the Chinese bombers flew just outside its air defense identification zone and that it had “closely followed” the movements.

You should see the abuse everyone heaps on China - outside of Pakistan, China has no friends (even NK has an uneasy alliance with China, since they're globally isolated, but I hear 11 Jinping and Kim Jong Un hate the crap out of each other).

You can't go around bullying everyone if you have no soft power, no NGOs, no Hollywood, no music industry, no cultural capital, no academic institutions of worth. People will see you for exactly what you are - a small hearted, nouveau-riche bully.

What you propose is not the solution without increasing India's production capacity.

Let's face it; many of our industries are also prospering because of cheaper finished goods which promote cost savings and increase profits for many Indian firms.

The reason?

Poor quantity, quality and timely delivery of goods made in India.

Tell me how many R&D centres exist for making something like Huawei, HTC, Lenovo or anything like this?

None.

Government sector is useless in R&D anyways so I am not counting it.

Private firms have only now raised their heads after 3 years of aggressive reforms by PM Modi for manufacturing.

Banning Chinese goods in anything less than next 15 years will be doomsday for our industry.

We cannot ban anything like that unless at war.

And alternates are either too expensive or too nascent.

Korea and Japan also make their goods in China.

Vietnam only assembles and makes raw materials.

Chinese products are going nowhere from India in next 20 years.

Obsession with service industry and primary goods industry has made us an import-oriented economy.

Unless that is repaired it won't change any status quo that we have today.
