BEIJING: Unveiling a five-point formula to improve relations with India, China's newly elected President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said the resolution of the boundary dispute between the two sides "won't be easy" and pending its final settlement "peace and tranquility" should be maintained on the border without affecting the overall ties.

59-year-old Xi, who took over as the head of Communist Party, president and military chief, completing a rare triad of power, sent clear signals of boosting bilateral relations with India and expressed his keenness to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next week on the sidelines of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) in his first contact with top Indian leadership after his inauguration.

The first leader born after China's independence in 1949, Xi also spoke of the need for India and China with a combined population of 2.5 billion to cooperate in multilateral fora in to safeguard the "legitimate rights and interests" of developing countries.

He said China sees its ties with India as "one of the most important bilateral relationships".

"The border question is a complex issue left from history and solving the issue won't be easy. However, as long as we keep up friendly consultations, we can eventually arrive at a fair reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement. Pending the final settlement of the boundary question the two sides should work together and maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas and prevent the border question from affecting the overall development of bilateral relations," Xi told PTI in an interview.

The new president was replying to a question on what policy the new Chinese leadership will pursue towards India and whether there would be any change in its position on the border issue.

India asserts that the border dispute covered about 4,000km, while China claims that it confined to about 2,000km to the area of Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers as Southern Tibet.

Unveiling his five proposals, Xi said that first China and India should maintain strategic communication and keep the bilateral relations on the "right track".

"Second, we should harness each other's comparative strengths and expand win-win cooperation in infrastructure, mutual investment and other areas," he said.

Xi said India and China should strengthen cultural ties and constantly increase the mutually expanding friendship between the two countries.

The Chinese leader said the two countries should expand coordination and collaboration in multi-lateral fora to jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and tackle global challenges.

"We should accommodate each other's core concerns and properly handle problems and differences existing between the two countries," he said in fifth proposal.

are Chinese Army men ready to die for their country if time comes ?
We have seen numerous reports regarding corruption in PLA where soldiers pay to be recruited (and they would want to get significant return for their investment) whereas it's totally opposite in India (and Pakistan) where men join Army for honor and love for their respective countries, very grim situation in China .

ignore the earlier comment,

fact of the matter is china cant even take on India alone. It would be akin to the Kurds taking on napoleon. The fault lines emanating from such a war will be immense. ....well we will both be at risk.....but the one tht has bigger enimies will get pounded more.....well i leave the rest of the deduction to u.

to delve into fictitious scenarios is absurd. its akin to the Chinese theory of dismembering India.

Tsangyang Gyatso = Tibetan name not Han Chinese. Tibetans are NOT Chinese.

Xi Jinping is a hardliner, I reckon he is only trying to buy time, and appear benevolent, start on the right note. Anyway this India is not the naive, idealistic and weak India of our grandparents. This time it is the IA that is cynical, battle hardened from the continuous CI ops in Kashmir, Siachen and the North East whereas the PLA is a shadow of its 1962 self--no civil war, Korean War veterans this time. Only a bunch of poseing, parade ground, photogenic brats aware of the painful fact that the last time they went to war ~35 years back they got their backsides handed to them by a smaller, weaker Vietnamese Army.

I think China too learned from its 1962 folly. They have tried to destabilize India through satellites like Pak, but that did not work and will sure backfire in the future( the way US learned from AfPak experience).

Peace between two countries is the only viable solution for a better future. Whether one tries(likes) it or not, peace is the only way forward.

All this talk about peace is just that talk. They will sweet talk to lull us into a false sense of good intentions. They hope we will let our guard down so then they can pounce while we are asleep and take over Arunachal Pradesh!!!!Nice try Xi !!!Peace will only come to PRC when you vacate the colonies of Tibet,East Turkestan and Inner Mongolia. Not to mention the Indian territories you have stolen since 1962.As to taking on India -- we are waiting. When are you coming or are you just a bunch of
cowardly thugs who just talk too much!!

Why are people getting excited about what Xi is saying ?
This is just normal tactics to show that the new leadership brings a message of peace and harmony. This is also to convince the people (Chinese people in particular) that the CCP does everything it can to make peace with India when in reality all they do is talking, as usual.
We should never let our guard down and also keep an eye on the Chinese leadership getting too close to Russia.

It's called South Mongolia. Inner Mongolia/Outer Mongolia nomenclature kinda implies that Mongolia belongs to China.
