"China has indisputable sovereignty of the South Sea, and China has sufficient historical and legal backing" to support its claims, senior Col Geng Yansheng, a ministry of defence spokesman, told reporters Friday in Beijing.

Days are not far when China will stake claim over Delhi because of presence of chinese restaurants there. :happy_2:

It was expected china would do so.Soon it will say all south asian countries are part of china. Its gladdening to see south east asian countries realising chinas game .USA is also not different as it is trying to create a string of pearls around china with this.
Ultimately the quest for both countries is to find who gets oil from this untapped region.

Chinese are making claims just like the Nazis did in ww2 and they will end up with the same fate.

A lot of this is a result of the Pacifist Japanese who more or less went soft and gave more than they should have to the Chinese in the water/island/oil dispute, when the Chinese saw how soft the Japanese were they thought they had free reign to all of the South China Seas.

Indian ocean is Indias.

China is I think acting in haste. It thinks its already a super power. But such statements and intent will quickly put all its neighbors in opposite camp. Japan is being wary of US these days and looking to disbanded its pacifist constitution and also develop nukes will intensify its effort and also firmly put it back in US camp. The recent SK NK incident and chinese going slow in wrapping the NKs has put SK firmly in US side though recently they were going soft on NK. Vietnam was always opposed to China.

China will find it difficult to actually become a super power now that the US too has realized that there cannot be a G2 because of chinese antagonism and they will make sure that china is kept on the brink which can slow its economic march.

This is particularly interesting:

"We will, in accordance with the demands of international law, respect the freedom of the passage of ships or aircraft from relevant countries."

So what would be the 'irrelevant' countries? Of course western navies. It also means that navies of other countries will be blockaded.

Interesting. India should claim all of Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia because it was once ruled by the Srivijaya and Chola empires. It would be more reasonable than most Chinese claims.

This is not going to sit well with either Taiwan, the Phillipines, Indonesia, Malaysia or Vietnam.

The very fact that they're making such claims, means they believe they have the ability to assert their claims over the area.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out between the United States and China.

No matter what the Chinese claim, the tendency to be an expansionist, irredentist state seems to come out ever so often.

This may however be premeditated, to 'test the waters' to see how other nations will respond.

Perhaps an alliance of South-east Asian naval powers, with the U.S. will emerge as a counter-weight.

The Chinese do not do anything in haste. Their system of government allows them to plan decades ahead.

As China grows stronger so will the claims and all the South-East Asia will be affected.
For a long time it was mainly India and Vietnam that has been bearing the brunt of Chinese aggression on borders - both their land and sea.

Now the rest of South-East Asia is going to get a taste of the dragon's expansionist ambitions.
Basically these small ASEAN countries have no choice but to band together and build up enough of a deterrent to prevent the chinese from getting too adventurous.

Its going to be fun to watch how all these countries cope with China !!

This is an interesting move which will benefit India in the long run. Such a declaration by China will surely rattle Taiwan and Vietnam causing unrest among other countries in the South China sea. Now begins a power stuggle in the South China sea which China will be engaged in. China will also be vary of US navy presence near South China sea.

The more China is involved with such disputes elsewhere the less we need to worry about China.
