You are going to see a vertical integration of well-capitalized (20-50 billion USD) defense companies, military procurement bureaus, and technology acquisition teams, creating institutions on the scale (if not expertise) of their Western peers. Friends in the space anticipate 2-3 trillion USD in procurement contracts going to the Chinese defense sector over the next 10 years, an amount matched only by the spending China is setting aside to basic R&D and urbanization. The goal is to build out enough naval and air hardware to have an absolute edge in quantity over the US, Japanese, and Koreans combined, and have some degree of qualitative parity.

Meanwhile, in India, political parties advocate things like NREGA...

Why not use the Liaoning as both a casino and as a warship?

I wonder if the US would use its ship for the hospitality industry.

George Washington would outdo any ship as a novel cruise liner, if refitted for the purpose. Imagine, no refuelling!

The sequester... lol. Giving affected Washington institutions hope that these cuts are temporary gives them no incentive to 'trim the fat', because they will all focus their cuts in ways designed to irk as many constituencies and special interests as possible, such that when the cuts are lifted, they will be first in line for a faster rebound in budget levels due to all the squealing that has occurred during the cuts. The Pentagon is no exception.
