New Delhi: China, and not Pakistan, is the focus of the Defence Ministry's latest 15-year plan for all the three services.

The latest integrated perspective plan, which will be in force from 2012 to 2027, is aimed at equipping the Indian armed forces to move from the current stage of dissuasion to deterrence against China. The plan is currently in the final stages of preparation.

According to the plan, by 2020, India wants to have dedicated Mountain Strike Corps, over 90,000 men specifically meant for deployment in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh and equipped for offensive operations.

To begin with, the military wants all the planned roads in these high altitude areas to be completed on priority basis.

India is also activating, revamping and upgrading its air bases along the China border both in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. This includes at least eight advance-landing grounds. Nyoma air base, barely 25 km from the Line of Actual Control, will eventually have Su-30 combat jets stationed there.

The Army is all set to improve the living conditions in high altitude areas by placing over 5,000 specially-designed, self-contained, thermally-insulated shelters for troops so that they can withstand temperatures going down to minus 40 degrees.

In the long run, India also plans to acquire and deploy ultra-light howitzers and light tanks in Ladakh to bolster security there.

Even the Indian Navy is planning for future contingencies by planning to operate two carrier battle groups, several stealth battleships, submarines and long-range reconnaissance planes.

Another important component in the long-term plan is to beef up the fledgling tri-services Andaman and Nicobar Command to keep a closer vigil on the strategically crucial south east Asian region as well as the Mallaca Straits.

This is over and above the on-going plans to develop 8,000-km range inter-continental ballistic missiles in the coming decade.

Well yusuf, you should know a few facts. NDTV is the only Indian channel allowed in Pakistan. It regularaly invites Pakistan "imtellectuals" who are hell bent upon proving that Pakitan and Pakistanis love India soooo much. Yet surveys shw that 70% of them are hostile to India. Of course NDTV will play down the Pakistani threat.

It's not about Pakistan and about the real threat that India faces. The news is about Indians military planners preparing for the short and medium term threats.

There are some of our media channels that just don't want to wake up and spread reality around the country so that the political dodos that are involved with each of them are not caught with their pants down. Think about it; if every single Indian was aware of our two-tiered threat in our nehgibourhood like the way Westerners and Israelis are (conversely), they'd start questioning the government not just on scams but also where their money is being spent in defense sector. This would add more troubles. So what's the solution? Buy off channels that promote bullcrap and spread lies.

NDTV is one such idiotic channel followed by the Bollywood and cricket-masala obsessed TOI. The way they covered the entire Karmapa issue and HH was so idiotic. One could clearly understand their bias. With traitor fools like Burkha Dutt who invites talks for most idiotic topics that don't often require discussions, NDTV could not be setting worse standards than their stupid talk shows that don't show anything real.

Ok this thread is not about news channels.

The services are coming up with a plan to counter China. We are going to raise a Mountain Strike Corps, get light tanks and howitzers for mountain warfare. Clearly, we are trying to develop capabilities from purely defensive to hold any Chinese attack to something to actually counter attack and step into their soil. This is a drastic change in policy . Wonder what kind of doctrine te armed forces have developed for this. We should start to see massive exercises on the mountain to validate any such new doctrine.

Its the defense ministry's plan, not NDTV or some other news channels' view point about the greater threat. I would hope that our army and defense ministry is well versed in figuring out what the bigger threat is militarily. Its about time that we actually get a National Security Doctrine as well like the President is mandated to do in the US.

I think that was obvious. Pakistan was more of an irritant than a threat and on the other hand China does pose a real threat due to its increased assertiveness on the Indian borders or string of pearls strategy or incursion into Indian ocean region in the near future.

This threat has to be taken care of with a multi-pronged approach - diplomacy, passive aggressiveness, economy and military preparation. Of these, we need to immediately prop-up our military prepration be it infrastructure in the north-east region or the modernization of the armed forces as well as a strong deterrent.
