Chinese and North Korean leaders exchanged congratulatory messages on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of a bilateral friendship and mutual aid treaty that commits China to immediately render military and other assistance to its ally against any outside attack.
Concluded on July 11, 1961, the China-Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance was extended twice, in 1981 and 2001. The current treaty runs through 2021.
