An inquiry has been launched in China after more than 900 dead pigs were found floating in a river near the eastern city of Shanghai.

No evidence has been found that the animals in the Huangpu river were dumped there or died of any animal epidemic, officials say.

But measures are being taken to monitor the quality of the water.

The authorities are trying to establish where the animals came from, after they appeared in the river on Friday.

Shanghai residents use the river as source of drinking water, the China Daily news website reports.

This is most surprising.

Pig is the staple of the Chinese.

I cannot believe that they would waste 900 pigs!

And I don't think 900 could die at one go, unless there was an epidemic or anyone would shove them in the river.

If there was an epidemic, then the Local Govt would have surely known and action taken.

Very mysterious.

CCP is nothing but a bunch of sissies who always try to hide facts from the world and that's what they are real good at for the last 6 decades.even when the sichuan earthquake killed some 100,000 people the chini authorities tried to cover up the original casualty figure and initially declared that only 10,000 people had died due to the earthquake!this is the reality of china,no wonder they are doing what they are so goo at i.e. hiding facts from the world:laugh:!

Nearly 6,000 dead pigs in river but water's fine, Chinese officials say

Hong Kong (CNN) -- 5,916 dead, bloated pigs and counting. Chinese officials say they expect to find more carcasses floating in the river that flows through the center of Shanghai -- but they insist the city's water is fine.

Officials said "no pollution has been found" in the city's water quality, according to the Shanghai Daily on Wednesday
"If the water is contaminated, we will put more the disinfectants and activated carbon to purify the water," an official from a Shanghai water plant was quoted in Xinhua, the state-run news agency.

The city's water authorities say they are increasing the number of quality checks, removing the dead pigs while they are further upstream and working to ensure water quality, according to the local Chinese newspaper.

How thousands of swollen dead pigs got to the river remains unclear, although there have been some clues. This week, sanitation workers, clad in masks and plastic suits, fished the bruised pig bodies from the river. The pink, decomposing blobs surfacing in the Huangpu River wreaked foul odors and alarmed residents.

"There were dead pigs all around and they really stunk," one local resident told CNN. "Of course, we're worried, but what can you do about it? It's water that we have to drink and use."If the water treatment process is very effective and can handle the sudden glut of contaminants, it's possible to minimize the impact, said Julian Fyfe, a senior research consultant specializing in water quality at the University of Technology Sydney.

But he added: "Most treatment plants would not be designed to accommodate that level of shock loading. It's such an unsual event." Fyfe spoke in general terms about water quality issues, as he is not involved with Shanghai's water treatment."If they are chlorinating heavily, which a lot of places may do, especially if they've got a very polluted water body to start with, then the effects could potentially be small," Fyfe said.

Dead pigs which have been sitting in the water for days, would leak blood, intestinal fluids and other pollutants, which could alter the taste and color of tap water. Many residents have begun drinking bottled water in fear of contamination, according to the Global Times, a Chinese newspaper. The agricultural commission in China said it had tested organ samples from the pigs and the results suggested the animals had contracted a type of porcine circovirus.

On Tuesday, national officials acknowledged the pig incident in a press conference Tuesday."According to monitoring statistics, there's no evidence to show that there's an outbreak of any major animal epidemics," said Chen Xiaohua, the national vice minister of agriculture. "But in the meantime, the incident shows how we need to improve our work in the future."

The situation appeared ripe for satire.

The claim had incredulous residents one-upping each another with one-liners on the country's popular microblog service, Sina Weibo.
"Since when is finding dead rotting pigs in a major river not a public health problem?" Weibo user, @Muyunsanjun2011, asked.
"Answer: When this happens in China."

A movie poster for "Life of Pi" was doctored and replaced with "Life of Pigs" with the main character's boat filled with dead pigs, and the water dotted with the bruised corpses.

It prompted another Weibo user, @_Nina_Burbage, to quip, "Since apparently, the water has not been contaminated, big leaders, please go ahead and have the first drink."

One weibo user, @Fujiadiandianxiaoya, joked: "I finally figured out why drinking boiled water makes me gain weight -- because it is in fact pork soup!"

Local authorities say they're looking into how the pigs ended up in the river. One possible factor, reported in the Chinese media, is a disease that had killed thousands of pigs in a village south of Shanghai.Officials in Jiaxing had blamed the dumping on some "local pig farmers who lack awareness of laws and regulations." The labels in the ears of the pigs found in the Huangpu River indicate they could have come from Jiaxing City, according to Xinhua, the Chinese state-run news agency. But officials say the tags only indicate place of birth, so the pigs could've come from elsewhere.Another official told the Shanghai Daily that the water doesn't necessarily flow from Jiaxing to Shanghai.

It really makes no difference in China.

There are too many pigs in China as it is!

A couple of pigs gone, is no big deal!

3,000 More Dead Pigs Won't Make the Huangpu River Any Worse - Alexander Abad-Santos - The Atlantic Wire

The Huangpu River, a source of drinking water to Shanghai's 23 million residents, should basically be called rotting swine soup. Some 3,000 more decomposing pigs have been found in the river near Shanghai since Monday, bringing the number to about 6,000 dead hogs, but authorities claim that water is just fine.

"If the water is contaminated, we will put more disinfectants and activated carbon to purify the water," Qian Huizhong, Deputy Director of Xiaokunshan Water Plant in Shanghai was quoted as saying in Xinhua, China's state-run news agency. Officials also said "no pollution has been found" in Shanghai's water quality. Officials said "the city is working to ensure its water quality, including removing pigs while they are further upstream, setting up aquatic plant barriers and increasing the frequency of quality checks," reports Shanghai Daily. The local government released a statement explaining that "the water quality of the upper reaches of the Huangpu river is generally stable, basically similar to the same period last year."

So on the bright side, the water quality is basically the same as last year. And on the not-so-bright side, exactly how terrible was the water quality in the Huangpu if 6,000 dead pigs don't move the needle? On Monday it was reported that the dead pigs were marinating in other refuse, like medical waste and a sex doll. According to CNN's water expert, those Chinese water authorities might be minimizing the toll of those decomposing pigs are having on Shanghai's water system:
