The world's largest floating solar power plant is located near the city of Huainan in Anhui Province, China. This is an inland facility.

As I understand it, the solar panels are positioned on floating buoys.

Whether inland or on the ocean, the linked buoys should keep the floating solar panels above the water. Next, just anchor the collection of floating buoys to the seafloor with steel cables (like floating offshore oil platforms).

In conclusion, hurricanes pose no threat to buoys or floating oil platforms. Similarly, hurricanes should pose no threat to floating solar panels on buoys.

I am glad that India is also setting up their solar power plants on water as well as lands and are not behind to be the world's leader in solar industry. 1 MW Canal-top Solar Power Project was implemented by Gujarat government on the Sanand Branch Canal of the Sardar Sarovar Project. Karnataka government have successfully set 200MW solar power plant and will implement 2000 MW solar power plant till December 2018. These are the initiative taken by Indian government. Private Solar energy companies like Tata, Azure, Agni Solar Systems are also playing key role in setting up solar power plant and offer electricity to consumers through PPA.

Solar panels on canals is fine, but what will really hit the jackpot would be to build huge systems on the sea near shorelines. After all we have a coastline of over 7500 km where there would be no land acquisition issues which is the bane of development activities on land. We could even consider using large inland water bodies like lakes which are not affected by weather influences like storm surges etc.

We have a similar floating solar panels system in ulsoor lake in Bangalore. Though it is at a small scale but is a good technology demonstrator.

Last year this comedy was done in Tamil Nadu by floating thermocol to save water. Those people can visit Ulsoor lake in Bangalore and see it for themselves
