Industrial espionage: Volkswagen betrayed by its own Chinese partner

German auto giant Volkswagen has become the victim of industrial espionage in China, where its local partner has allegedly stolen engine designs, the business daily Handelsblatt reported on Friday. For several months now, Chinese group FAW -- with which VW has a joint venture -- is believed to have copied one of the German group's engines in what sources described as "systematic and planned" espionage, the newspaper said.FAW plans to sell a model equipped with the engines in Russia, in competition with VW and Skoda models, the report continued."It's quite simply a catastrophe," it quoted a VW manager as saying.China is VW's most important export market and it sold a total 2.26 million cars there last year.China does not allow foreign automakers to build their own cars there but requires them to work together with domestic companies in joint ventures where the Chinese partner holds the majority stake.Contacted by AFP about the Handelsblatt article, a VW spokesman said: "We're examining the issue very closely. On the other hand, we've always worked together with FAW very successfully and very trustfully in the past."

dont konw if the whole thing is true but if VW chooses to leave prc no 1 will care to stop them.....

when the market is getting so big the cpc gov should adopt some new polycies....such as compulsory technical transfers to chinese firms etc then this kind of issues no matter if ture can be avoided....

Since it isn't a military product, it is under WTO jurisdiction. The company can bring them to court, sue and shut them down.

This is the best way to divert all the Western companies to Vietnam and other South East Asian countries.

1 depends on how important these companies from the west feel about the chinese market....i just fear maybe 1 day u ask these westerners to ---- off and they just wont go coz they dont wanna lose the chinese market.

2 chinese auto makers still lack some high end techs compared to the west.....but 1st just a little and with time this tech gap can be filled and chinese car makers should be able to come up with some better products like the west in the future.......2nd more westerner leaving means fewer compitors for chinese car makers.....which is good if their products r good and thery will make more cars so more factories and workmen r needed which can offset the effects of what u assumed 'This is the best way to divert all the Western companies to Vietnam and other South East Asian countries. '......coz the car market will always be huge in prc.....leave alone the fact that our car makers r already going overseas....

Hopefully, they will be better than the Chinese junk flooding the world market!

But then such junk is cheap and so one can resort to the principle of 'waste economy' and think that they have also arrived!

China is indeed helping all to feel that they have 'arrived' with their cheap junk that can be thrown out without feeling any remorse of money wasted!

Indica is selling in the UK Market under some other name.

Top Gear did a rogue documentary on it because they were told to buzz off!

TATA Motors is in the process of developing a version of their Nano car meant for the European markets. Exact details of the project, like date of launch etc has however been kept out of public domain right now.
Compact cars have not made much of an impact in the Indian market, though the new 2012 Nano comparatively has been able to achieve some headway. It is therefore not surprising that Tata Motors is thinking of fresher pastures for their Nano project.
That it would be a new design which makes its way into the European market is what Mr. Prakash Telang, MD operation at Tata Motors confirmed. In his words, "The Nano that is to debut in Europe will be significantly different, but will have same characteristics."
Another region which the Nano is being planned for is the US market. That would be a three year plan to fructify and the cost would be approximately USD 7,000 to 8,000. Makes it about four times the cost of the car in India.

I just wonder why these germanies don't go to russia suing the chinese company?

Is there something we don't know or the newspaper doesn't tell? Obviously, every company who want to enter Chinese market has to share certain tech with local partner. So we really don't know if Chinese steals that tech or Germany already sold that tech to Chinese. So far Volkswagen itself cannot tell which is the truth.

As a chinese, I know that a lot of foreign companies had some under table agreement with CCP: they will provide centain parts of key technologies to chinese in exchange of chinese market. Their plan is that they would keep their advantage for some years by holding the rest parts of technology. For example, when they sold the engine technology, they can give your the datas and design of engine except the the material. So, they can control the chinese manufacturer by controlling the material supply. When Chinese make the breakthrough on material and start to sell their own products, these foreign companies just simply play as the victim of Chinese spy.

i guess youre being sarcastic ? - even if dragon is 22% of the world's market , it means the rest of us are 78 % - cant we get our act together and get them under control eg via WTO etc etc ? or do we have to wait for a disaster ?
