To take this disussion forward. What is the meaning of doing a Kargil? Kargil like operations happened in 1965 also after the ceasefire and Tashkent agreement.
The enemy tries to occupy mountain features that are continous. The occupation of such territory would threaten some key region which would be unacceptable to us. Eg: In 1965 the Kalidhar mountain range overlooking road Akhnoor-Sundarbani-Rajauri were occupied, this threatened to cut off, Rajauri and Poonch from Jammu. You all know that Kargil occupation was intended to threaten Leh.
When IDSA states that China can do a Kargil of us, they should also give the likely locations that are vulnerable to such an operation. Geography is not difficult to understand. A general statement that Ladhak, central sector or Arunachal is at risk is too simple a statement.
I am actually surprised by such a statement in an IDSA paper. PLA does not carry out hare-brained operations like Kargil. They believe in hitting the enemy with overwhelming force - that is their military philosophy. In 1962 they hit hard and went back before the winter blocked the passes and PLA units got cut-off by the snow. They did not remain on the ground captured by them.
