More than 900 people have been arrested in China for selling fake or tainted meat in the last three months, state media say.

Officials say they uncovered almost 400 such cases and seized more than 20,000 tonnes of fake meat.

In one case, the suspects made fake mutton from foxes, mink and rats after adding chemicals, state media said.

The report is the latest in a series of cases highlighting food safety issues in China, as Martin Patience reports.

Let's keep the culture-bashing to a minimum, shall we?
@Daredevil

This is a sad phenomenon. With food prices rising, many vendors and restaurants resort to ingredient substitution in order to keep from raising prices on stingy consumers. Symptomatic of underlying economic and regulatory issues.

Pretty high, actually. Rat meat is not commonly consumed in China, but rats, ferrets, and other small mammals are commonly farmed for their fur and cheap leather (e.g. a large chunk of the leather that goes into a luxury car's dashboard might come from such sources, since people usually don't notice as the leather has a hard plastic insert behind it anyhow).

Ergo, there's a large surplus of meat from these animals.

So people are able to distinguish the meat types while eating? I mean how did these guys were arrested.
