China announces Rs 1.3 bln aid to Nepal Army

Chinese Army chief has announced a whopping aid of USD 19 million to the Nepalese army on conclusion of his visit to the country, during which he also met Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, a trip that further cemented bilateral ties.

Chief of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China Chen Bingde, who arrived here on an official visit announced the highest assistance provided so far by China to Nepal Army, for constructing an Army hospital.

"China's emergence as a prosperous power not only helps establish peace and stability in the region but also in the whole world," Khanal told Chen when the Chines army chief visited him.

Chen's visit to Nepal is considered significant as it is taking place at a time when the Maoists have just joined the CPN-UML led government but the major parties are yet to agree on a common agenda to settle the issue relating to army integration and rehabilitation.

General Chen is accompanied by Commander of the Chinese People's Armed Force Lt. Gen.Wang Jianping, Maj.Gen. Yang Jinshan of the Tibet Military Command and Maj.Gen.Quian Lihua, head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defence, sources at Nepal Army Headquarters said Thursday.

Nepal Army chief Chhatra Man Singh Gurung and visiting Chinese army chief Bingde have signed in a Memorandum of Understanding for providing the economic assistance of Rs.1.3 billion (USD 19 million) that would be utilised mainly for purchasing medical equipments for Birendra Army Hospital, Chhauni and heavy machinery equipments meant for construction and development works.

"The purpose of the visit was to further enhancing mutual understanding, promoting friendship, strengthening cooperation and propelling the China-Nepal Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation featuring ever-lasting friendship to move ahead constantly," reads a press release issued by Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

During the meeting with Chen Prime Minister reiterated Nepal's adherence to One-China policy and not to allow any anti-China activities in the territory of Nepal.

The Prime Minister said that Nepal feels proud to see the immense progress China had made in the last 30 years.

He also apprised the delegation of present peace and constitution making process in Nepal.

Economically developing and politically stable Nepal is important not only for the stability of Asia pacific region but also for the whole world, said General Chen.

He expressed firm belief that Nepalese government and people are fully capable of solving their problems and expressed hope that current peace process will come to fruitful conclusion soon.

Now Nepal is seriously going to be in trouble if it starts accepting aid from PLA directly, assuming that PLA has direct control of all defence-related affairs in China. $19 million may not sound too much, but this could just be the beginning. BTW.. CURSES TO UPA for the Nepali blunder it did in foreign policy .

India needs to keep a close watch on the current establishment in Nepal!
Also, the anti-Tibet tilt of Nepal... doesnt seem to have got fixed even after the communists have become weaker.

Actually India has been playing smart. There is too much pressure on India inside Nepal, stakes are too high particularly when the competitor is a rich, aggressive and overconfident neighbor. But we have managed to maintain our influence over Nepalese people and institutions so far. India can push right buttons at right time to ensure compliance, they will do our bidding either way.

There will be only one victim in this Indo-China cold war: NEPAL. I predict balcanization of Nepal with Madhesi regions opting for joing the Indian union in case Nepal leans too much towards China, we can make it happen, and signals originating from Nepal suggests that we have already put the plan in motion.

We are talking about another country not a state in India, right? As long as Nepal doesn't regard india as its enemy, I don't see india has anything to oppose. Of course, if you are worry about indian influence, then you have to pay more. That is exactly how small country to survive: playing big ones against each other.

The news only tells onething: if india doesn't adopt a policy in favor of Nepal, you may lose it because they got another option now.

As I separately appealed India should have launched a "Marshal Plan" of her own to aid neighbors economically and militarily so as to keep them from disorbiting about India. u have to "buy" influence even though Nepal has been overshadowed by India so long. Now it's high time Nepal pursue her best interest.

Balcanization happens always with an overwhelming power's intervention. China plays a good counter-balance in S. Asia and of course won't allow any attempts to disintegrate Nepal undermining China's interest. Rest assured Nepal is pretty safe like Mongolia btwn Russia and China.

Appreciated Om Shanti and no offense but Nepal is too small to become a reason of a third world war...

we do not have any plan to annex Nepal otherwise we were always capable of doing that just like Sikkim and AP and there was nothing China could do anything about it but to cry and send USA a complaint letter. Anyway we respect Nepal's sovereignty and if a need arises we will be there to save it from becoming another TIBET....Do not trust Dragon too much....

    What are its implications ?

How a nation without having a treaty can give handouts in the name of aid to a military.

    Very Good

Sri lanka and Bangladesh were already nt on india side
Bangladesh because of the killing of innocent bangladesh's by BSF
and Sri lanka because of india proxy war in sri lanka and support to the tamils in sri lanka

Pakistan was always not on there side because of elements like RSS in india and col.purohit

    now nepal as well

    anyone left?

India needs to stop the 'carrot only' approach it has towards its neighbours. As long as India only keeps offering more money than China, these countries would have nothing to lose by playing China and India against each other and getting more money from both.

India needs to sometimes use 'the stick' as well, if a country get military aid from China then threaten to cut off our aid, if a country allows Chinese military bases then threaten to arm the rebels and so on. If India continues its current policy of no consequences, then the country would just be offering hard earned Indian tax money to foreign countries and get nothing in return.

China needs to look beyond defence coorporation. The focus should be on economy and cultural exchanges. A socialistic and prosperous Nepal (with a GDP per capital several times higher than her big southern neightbor) would be of best interest to the man kind.
