China angrily reacts with threats after South Korean missile defense decision

HIGHLIGHTS
  • China objects to the deployment in South Korea of the THAAD
  • If this happens, then China-South Korea relations will face the possibility of getting ready to cut off diplomatic relations, China said
BEIJING: Chinese state media has reacted with anger and threats of boycotts after the board of an affiliate of South Korea's Lotte Group approved a land swap with the government that will enable authorities to deploy a US missile defense system.

The government decided last year to deploy the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in response to the North Korean missile threat, on land that is part of a golf course owned by Lotte in the Seongju region, southeast of Seoul.

The board of unlisted Lotte International Co Ltd approved the deal with the government on Monday.

China objects to the deployment in South Korea of the THAAD, which has a powerful radar capable of penetrating Chinese territory, with Beijing saying it is a threat to its security and will do nothing to ease tension with North Korea.

Influential state-run Chinese tabloid the Global Times said in an editorial on Tuesday that Lotte should be shown the door in China.

"We also propose that Chinese society should coordinate voluntarily in expanding restrictions on South Korean cultural goods and entertainment exports to China, and block them when necessary," it said in its English-language edition.

The paper's Chinese version said South Korean cars and cellphones should be targeted as well.

"There are loads of substitutes for South Korean cars and cellphones," it said.

The WeChat account of the overseas edition of the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily said late on Monday that cutting diplomatic ties should also be considered.

"If THAAD is really deployed in South Korea, then China-South Korea relations will face the possibility of getting ready to cut off diplomatic relations," it said.

The official Xinhua news agency also said in a commentary late on Monday that China "did not welcome this kind of Lotte".

"Chinese consumers can absolutely say no to this kind of company and their goods based on considerations of 'national security'," it said.

South Korea's defense ministry said on Tuesday it had signed a land swap deal with Lotte on the golf course in exchange for providing military property. A South Korean military official told Reuters the military would begin installing fences and soldiers would patrol the area.
The Lotte Group said on Feb. 8 Chinese authorities had stopped construction at a multi-billion dollar real estate project in China after a fire inspection, adding to concern in South Korea about damage to commercial relations with the world's second-largest economy.

Asked if South Korea had demanded the Chinese government suspend any economic retaliation, South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-kyun said: "We have continuously persuaded China so far and will keep continuing efforts to do so."

South Korean government officials have said THAAD is a defensive measure against North Korean threats and does not target any other country.

South Korea's central bank said this month the number of Chinese tourists visiting the tourist island of Jeju had fallen 6.7 percent over the Lunar New Year holiday from last year, partly because of China's "anti-South Korea measures due to the THAAD deployment decision".

China has become biggest threat to world peace and security.

All the affected Nations will have to unite to fight Chinese hagemony. Any single nation on its own can't fight China now not even US. The sooner we unite the better it will be to tame the lizard.

Hitting them financially by boycotting Chinese products by all the nations will be very effective in containing China and could be a good start.

Lol, CCP learn it from our "Chinese product boycott" campaign. Still Cltr+c and Cltr+v .

We dominate China culturally for 2000+ years without firing a single bullet or killing a single Chinese , and we continue to do so even we are sucked to almost to our death during colonial rule and still no where near to our former glory .

Not everything that is good for China is necessarily bad for us. We show our nationalism by boycotting Chinese phones citing the risk of hidden bugs and espionage, yet Indians have no problem using Apple devices which are legally beholden to tap our data and share it with US govt under the NSA program. If China is bad, is the alternative we are using any better? Is it better to be spied on by US than being spied on by China? they're both equally bad.

Boycotting Chinese products only works when you boycott it for an INDIAN ALTERNATIVE. Just boycotting Red Mi and buying and iPhone does not solve anything. Buy Micromax instead.

Also, if we start thinking like this, we buy billions of $ worth of stuff from the west, and they give billions in military aid to Pakistan. If we ought to boycott, please also include American brands in the list. We stand in lines outside the US VISA embassy like shameless idiots, while our people get shot like pigs in the streets of the US. We only hold silent protests with placards. No calls for boycott, nothing. Selective outrage. Even today, India has sent a delegation of IT lobbyists to beg Trump-saab to not impose VISA restrictions on H1B workers.

We need to payback China for 1965 by using the Tibet card, but we must stay out of the US coalition on the South China Sea issue. This will keep the US on their toes. It's not like they will let China dominate SCS just because India does not participate in it. It will just become costlier for them. This is the price they pay for funding and arming Pakistan.

Don't be so eager to be a US pawn. India played the Soviet and US against each other during the cold war, and got good dividends for herself. That is how we should play this game as well. Appear fickle, support China on few issues, oppose them on few issues. Always keep the US on the toes and squeeze out concessions from them for every time we support their stance against China. Never let them take us for granted by spewing this 'shared interest', 'shared values', 'natural allies' bullshit.

China will pay us more dividends for staying out of the SCS conflict than the US will pay us for being a part of it. Favorable trade policies, Masood Azhar, joint co-operation in oil exploration in SCS and Myanmar, whatever we want, we can ask of China, as a price for keeping out of the conflict, because we are a Gandhian nation, as the US constantly keeps reminding us, when we try to take strong action against their pet dog Pakistan. Why not be a Gandhian now and stay out of SCS?

How will it sound if I tell you, "You should keep your hands tied behind your back so that I can slap you anytime I want. Its unfair to my slapping capability if you untie your hands, I will not talk to you".

China & pakistan sound like this when India / South Korea tries to deploy BMD.

We purchased so many sophisticated weapons in the last 2 years, but China didn't bat an eyelid. Last year, India moved 100 T72 tanks near the China border and China pissed their pants. So, it is not hypothetical space wars that China is scared of; They are scared of our willingness to pick a fight. Satellites, laser weapons, blah blah China doesn't care because they know that it will not be used. If we move tanks, they know that India might start attacking Chinese interests in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal.

Mighty, supa dupa powa China which doesn't get scared of US, got scared of 100 T72 tanks and started writing newspaper articles warning India. Now we know what gets their goats.

PS : There was confirmed news yesterday that US has sanctioned S400, therefore India will not be able to acquire it. How come not a single person on this forum raised this issue on the forum?

There's no sanction on S 400 sales, only long range 400 KMS missiles can't be sold to non mtcr countries but India is now mtcr country so India can buy longer range missiles too. It could affect China as it is non mtcr country.

Are bhai, I am talking about a news I saw just yesterday. This is some new development. US has sanctioned the russian firms which make S400, which makes it impossible for Indian banks to give credit guarantee for the Indian armed forces to acquire them. I am actively searching it but found no online citation, but I saw it in the news in WION channel. This is a new channel named World Is One News, it could easily be a Saudi metaphor for 'Ummah news' so the credibility of this channel is not verified, but given that Suchant Sareen etc participate in debates here, it is seems credible.

Either it's true or maybe some psyops, but I did see that news for sure. It made sense because American investment in Pakistan only bears fruits until India has a nuclear vulnerability for Pakistan to exploit. If India gets S400, the blackmailing power of the US (and the money they spent on Pakistan for so many years) will go to waste. I will only believe this S400 acquisition hype after the first system lands on India. Till then, the US will actively try to derail the sale.

NEW DELHI: India's plans to procure strategic defence equipment from Russia including contracts of $5.5 billion for shipbuilding appear to be in jeopardy because Russian firms are unable to furnish the requisite guarantees from Indian banks owing to sanctions imposed by the US.

This has raised concerns in India over procurement of the S-400 missile shield as well, which is sorely needed to seal the country's airspace with Pakistan, said people familiar with the matter.

Russia had in October last year signed an inter-governmental agreement with India for the sale of four Project 1135.6 class stealth frigates, two of which are to be made in India. The deal also involves creating shipbuilding infrastructure in India. Besides, Russia will be a key contender in an upcoming tender for a new class of conventional submarines under the P75I project of the Indian Navy. Both these projects seem to have hit a roadblock due to the US-imposed sanctions.

As per Indian rules, all foreign vendors of defence equipment need to furnish guarantees from designated Indian banks before bidding for any project.

However, with the US-imposed Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) sanctions on Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation, which were extended last year to include all entities attached to the company, Indian banks are not in a position to grant guarantees for the contracts.

"No Indian bank can deal with any entity on the SDN list as this will get them into major trouble with the US. As international transactions involve trade in dollars, no bank can afford to be noncompliant with the sanctions list," an official told ET on condition of anonymity.

The matter can be resolved only if India amends its procurement rules to give Russian entities special exemption from the clause mandating bank guarantees, the people cited earlier said.

The last deal India signed with a Russian shipyard was to overhaul its Kilo class submarines at the Zvezdochka shipyard.

Two Indian submarines are already undergoing the life extension programme. However, Zvezdochka too was named in the extended list of sanctions by the US late last year. One of India's biggest deals with Russia till date, for the S-400 missile shield, too faces uncertainty due to the sanctions. Almaz-Antey, which manufacturers the cutting-edge missile shield, is also on the SDN list, making it impossible for Indian banks and even private sector companies that have other overseas interests to deal with it.
"India may need to change its rules to allow the Russian companies to furnish guarantees either directly from Russian banks or have some other arrangements if these projects have to go through," the official said.
A senior team from Russia is expected to discuss the matter with the Indian side later this month. Russia has traditionally been India's largest military supplier, accounting for most major purchases by the air force, army and navy.
This position has, however, been strongly contested, with the US inking large deals in the past five years that have taken it to the top position.

What is this? S400 is Russian weapon. What US has sanctioned mean? US has put sanction or US sanction (Approve) the sale. ?

I think there is some sort of a rule that if the US sanctions a firm, and if any bank provides funding to anyone to buy anything from a sanctioned firm, then even that bank will get sanctioned. So the banks refuse to provide funds for that purchase. In our case, if Indian banking system provides funds to Indian military to buy S400, then US will sanction Indian banking system.

@captscooby81 has posted the citation to that news just above this message. Thank for for that. I am reposting it.

Here is the details : http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...n-jeopardy-heres-why/articleshow/57423823.cms

I think, if we want to proceed with the purchase, we will have to do a barter system, like we did when US sanctioned Iran, we paid in gold bars. Similarly, we can deal with Russia in terms of our exports to them. Russia's major imports from India are pharma, and diamonds.

Russian money reserves are coming at a point where after 2017, they will run out of money, so they are willing to sell stuff to us by hook or crook. We just need to be ready to pay for it outside of the international banking system. Just give them gold, or buy their oil at a 200% price and make the S400 look like a free gift on paper. Just say "we purchased 20B$ worth of oil for 40B$ and Russia gave us S400 for free". :pound:

I am sure we will find a way around if we imported oil from Iran for all these years even after the US sanctions .We don t have any other option than finding a way around if we want S400 and those 4 Frigate s which we are planning to built ...

Seems China on weeds , or China really scared of Modi-Doval duo .
First threat of selling ICBM to pak and now Suddenly Chinese came up with "Discount" offer , to make "Concession" on Aksai chin against City like Tawang.lol
Perhaps China(CCP) should start talk to return Aksai Chin back so that we make concession in Chinese claim on Tibet and East Turkestan.

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/aksai-chin-china-india-tawang-dai-bingguo/1/895657.html

China prepared to make concessions in Aksai Chin if India gives up Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh

China's long-time negotiator on the border talks, who retired in 2003, has said that Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is an "alienable" part of Tibet and that a boundary settlement would not be possible unless India agreed to make concessions in the eastern sector.

But if India did so, China would also make concessions in Aksai Chin, suggested Dai Bingguo, spelling out in detail for the first time his thoughts on a solution.

Dai, who was the Special Representative on the boundary issue for 15 rounds of talks until his retirement in 2013, said that India "held the key" to the settlement and that if it took into account China's concerns in the eastern sector, Beijing would similarly do so in other areas.

India sees China as occupying 38,000 sq km of its territory in Aksai Chin, while China claims 90,000 sq km in Arunachal Pradesh.

Dai, who recently penned his memoirs, told the Beijing-based China-India Dialogue magazine, published by the official China International Publishing Group, in an interview: "The disputed territory in the eastern sector of the China-India boundary, including Tawang, is alienable from China's Tibet in terms of cultural background and administrative jurisdiction."

He said it was not until February 1951 that "the local government of Tibet [was] forced to stop its actual administration of Tawang". "Even the British colonialists who drew the illegal 'McMahon Line' respected China's jurisdiction over Tawang," he said.

Dai added: "The major reason the boundary question persists is that China's reasonable requests [in the east] have not been met".

"If the Indian side takes care of China's concerns in the eastern sector of their border," he said, "the Chinese side will respond accordingly and address India's concerns elsewhere."

Despite his emphasis on Tawang, Dai suggested that the 15 rounds of talks he participated in had moved both sides close to "a political settlement". His comments suggest this would involve mutual adjustments or concessions, most likely in Tawang and Aksai Chin.

"China and India are now standing in front of the gate towards a final settlement," he said. "The gate is a framework solution based on meaningful and mutually accepted adjustments. Now, the Indian side holds the key to the gate."

The 19th round of talks was held between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and State Councillor Yang Jiechi, Dai's successor as SR, in Beijing last April.
