CHENNAI: Home minister P Chidambaram on Sunday visited the family of his relative Nachal Chokalingam who was murdered in Mandaveli on Saturday.

Chidambaram was in his village Kandanoor in Karaikudi when he heard about the murder. "He visited the family while he was on his way back to Delhi," said his son Karthi Chidambaram. The minister spends every weekend in his village and the week in New Delhi. "Nachal's parents found the gesture supportive," said Nachal's uncle. "He spent 10 to 20 minutes in the house with the family," he added. Sources said Chidambaram's grandfather and the victim's greatgrandfather were siblings.

Nachal Chockalingam, an employee of Bank of America, was found murdered in her house with her hands bound and her face wrapped in a polythene cover on Saturday.

Police say she may have been strangled with a towel. Doctors at the Royapettah General Hospital ruled out the possibility sexual abuse before the murder. The incident came to light when her sister Barani did not get a call from her as usual in the morning. On Saturday, the police picked up four people and ruled out murder for gain. Five sovereigns of gold jewellery were missing but police say the murderers stole the items only to divert the attention of investigators.
