2014 polls: Chidambaram likely to be Congress candidate for PM post not Rahul Gandhi, says Economist

It's Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and not Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi who is likely to be the party's prime ministerial candidate in the next general elections in 2014, Economist has said.
The leading international weekly says since Chidambaram's fiercest rival President Pranab Mukherjee has been being elevated to the top post, Chidambaram is most suited to the prime ministerial post.
The Economist says Chidambaram's growth -oriented outlook can give the nation the much-needed push.
As per Economist, while Manmohan Singh will be well past 80 after 2014 polls and Rahul is still unprepared for the PM's post, Chidambaram has got the right credentials to lead the nation, having been seen as the architect of UPA's populist cash transfer scheme (CTS).
Chidambaram, who has also got the backing of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, is adept at tackling economic challenges, Economist adds

I thought it was going to be Nandan Nilekani ? Anywas smart move to shield Rahul baba. If Rahul is put up as PM candidate and they lose, dissent will be out in the open.

It will be a bold move for congress, if true.

Chidambaram's election even this time around is suspect and so it is now a court case.

But if he declare as pm candidate things can work in his favour.
A tamil as prime minister of india can apple tamil nadu people.
But i am thinking that if it is not tamil nadu.
Congress can ask chidambaram to contest any 5 lok sabha seats of
    Murshidabad & Malda district.

Congress 2014? The author must be delusional. Whichever party the next Prime Minister might be, it is surely not going to be Congress. There is a limit to which people can be fooled. Do you people think that Indian voters are complete idiots?

Congress can make Rahul PM of this country any moment they want. But Raajmata knows he is not ready, much like Rajiv in his early days.

As for the PM candidate for 2014, its really a tough call for UPA because only they will be announcing PM candidate. NDA won't announce candidacy to preserve the strength.

btw Chidambaram is a very authoritative leader & surprisingly enjoys influence over most of his subordinates. Even Mr.Rai respects and still works in interest of his boss.

    Interesting move this.

Pranab Mukherjee would for sure be licking his wounds, it now seems certain he was "taken-out" with a purpose.

So, Rahul is being shielded yet again, doesn't surprise though! One thing stands out, which is, not just the average congress worker, even the much trusted courtier doesn't bestow much faith in Rahul, nor does Sonia Gandhi.

I am not as certain. What I suspect might happen is the anti-Congress vote might get split amongst many and UPA III could well become a reality. What was required was one party or a coalition to consolidate this anti-Congress sentiment, and possibly translate into votes, but the party/coalition with most potential to do that, the BJP/NDA, hasn't really shown the leadership nor the unity to inspire much confidence, and with the AAP around, the hardcore nationalist, non-ideologue voter, completely fed up with the current set-up, will further be attracted to the new party.

I really dread the day if we end up with a 3rd front of any sort. If UPA II was worse, we are waiting for the worst to happen, and if either the BSP or the SP score well, then either of these two will have a very big role to play, and that just can't be good news for the country.

It was time for the BJP to be absolutely clear on Modi as their next PM candidate, their only real chance. If not, they can pretty much bid a good-bye to whatever little chance they have.

I hate to tip congress-I but if I am someone who will decide on these things then either I will keep S.M.M.Singh or Mr. Salman Khurshid for PM post.

Wow! Never expected this! I really hope this news is true, because PC as PM will be the best thing that's happened to India in decades! We will finally have a no-nonsense non-WKK, capable, strong leader who can uncripple this tottering government! PC is the right guy to deal with Pakis & Chinis as well as to fix the economy......PC for PM 2014! :D
