CHANDIGARH: In what could serve as a deterrent against the use and trade of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS), district court Chandigarh on Saturday ordered death sentence to a drug dealer.

The court issued death sentence to Paramjit Singh of Amritsar and 15 years jail to Festus Benson of republic of Burundi

Singh and Benson were arrested during the tenure of controversial IPS officer Saji Mohan on November 30, 2007. Mohan was posted as regional director Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at Chandigarh at the time. There are several graft cases and drug pilferage cases against Saji Mohan.

The duo, when arrested near Grain Market Chandigarh by NCB, were possessing 10 kg heroin. According to the prosecution, Paramjit came in his car to deliver the consignment to Festus Benson. As the delivery was being made, NCB officials nabbed them.

On January 19, both were convicted by special judge Shalini Nagpal but the quantum of sentence was pronounced on Saturday.
