Champions Trophy: India beat Belgium 4-2 in quarters, set up semis clash with Pakistan

NEW DELHI: India continued their good run in the Champions Trophy as they came from behind to beat Belgium 4-2 in keenly-contested quarterfinal to set up mouth-watering semifinal date with arch-rivals Pakistan.

    Schedule & Results

India got their act together after conceding two goals as they dominated the rest of the game to make it to the last four of the eight-nation tournament.

Indian defence was at their best as Belgium failed to take an advantage after being awarded back-to-back penalty corners. India made counter attack but lost the chance to make it 1-0.

India conceded another penalty corner after ball hit captain Sardar Singh's foot and Belgium made no mistake this time around as Felix Denayer converted the third penalty corner to give visitors 1-0 lead in first quarter.

Sebastien Dockier showed the display of neat deflection in the 18th minute to increase Belgium lead to two goals to nil.

Drag-flicker Rupinder Singh gave the home crowd something to cheer and reduced India's trail by converting the penalty corner in the second quarter. Dharamvir Singh led the Indian attack tried to equalise with his strike but Belgium goalkeeper denied it.

India made a terrific fightback when SK Uthappa deflected V Raghunath's slap hit to level the match 2-2 in the 27th minute.

Indian goalkeeper P Sreejesh once again was in his elements as he kept Belgian strikers at bay in the third quarter. The monent of the match came in 41st minute of the match with Akashdeep Singh scoring the third goal for the hosts.

India consolidated their lead to 4-2 on a good counter attack when Dharamvir scored a fine field goal after receiving a good pass from Sardar.

2014 Champions Trophy: Arsalan’s brace guides Pakistan to 4-3 win over India

PRESERVING THE RECORD: Pakistan maintained their 100% record against India – never losing a Champions Trophy semi-final match – with their 4-3 win over their neighbours. :pakistan:

KARACHI / BHUBANESWAR:*Pakistan cruised into the final of the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy by edging past arch-rivals India 4-3 in a thrilling semi-final match at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar in India on Saturday, maintaining their 100% record of never losing to India in the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan, who beat the Netherlands 4-2 in the quarter-final, were 1-0 down when Gurjinder Singh opened scoring with a well-converted penalty corner in the 12th minute of the first quarter.

Pakistan came back strong in the second quarter and equalised, courtesy of Muhammad Arsalan Qadir’s goal in the 17th minute.

Muhammad Waqas then put Pakistan ahead with a goal in the 32nd minute just after the half-time break.
Dharamvir Singh brought the Indians back in the game with an equaliser in the 38th minute; however, Pakistan’s Muhammad Irfan put them in lead with a 44th-minute goal

Pakistan’s 3-2 lead was short-lived as Chandanda Thimmaiah scored in the 45th minute to bring India back on equal terms.

The match came down to the wire and in the 59th minute, Arsalan found himself in the penalty box and after making a swift turn chipped it over the keeper for the winner.
The Indian assault began to pressurise Pakistan in the final minute of the game, but the Greenshirts contained the hosts and were jubilant as the referee brought the game to an end.

Pakistan’s former player Qasim Zia, who had scored goals against India in the 1982 and 1986 Champions Trophy knock-out stages, was impressed by the young team’s performance.

“The young players played really well, I congratulate them and the nation for a long-awaited victory against a strong team and arch-rivals India,” said Zia. “The way they won was really thrilling. The match could not have been more exciting.”

Rehan Butt, who scored two goals in the 2002 Champions Trophy against India, added, “The match reminded me of the match we played back in 2002 when Mudassar Ali and I scored two goals each to defeat India.”

“I’m happy that Pakistan have maintained the record of not losing any semi-final match against India in the Champions Trophy.”

Germany end Australia’s Champions Trophy reign
Olympic gold medallists Germany quashed Australia’s bid to win a sixth successive Champions Trophy field hockey title, ousting the side 3-2 in the semi-final on Saturday.
The Germans, playing with seven junior World Cup winners of 2013, stunned the Kookaburras with two goals by the ninth minute through Timur Oruz and Mats Grambusch.

They went up 3-0 immediately after half-time when Florian Fuchs took advantage of a goalmouth scramble and scooped the ball past Australian goalkeeper Andrew Charter.

Australia hit back in the 34th minute as Chris Ciriello banged in a penalty corner to net his fourth goal in the tournament. Nicholas Budgeon narrowed the margin further in the 42nd by scoring off a penalty corner rebound.

Australia, who lost to Germany 4-2 the last time they met in the semi-finals of the 2012 London Olympics, failed to equalise despite benching the goalkeeper to accommodate an extra striker.

Pakistan will now face Germany in the final today, while Australia and India will play each other for the third place.

They are pointing these gestures towards the crowd after the match.

Wether their actions are punishable or not, that will be decided by the disciplinary committee !!

Seems these guys are too much excited after beating India just by one goal margin!!
The match would have gone either way.

Disciplinary committee accepted their apology and assurance of not repeating in future. So no further action.

But, as far as Pakistan hockey is concerned this is not the first time.

Did you even watch the match? Indian audience misbehaved with swearing and abuses and threw with bananas. Sportsmen should never retaliate but in this case I can't say I regret it. This is India, hostile territory.

Don't lie, nothing like that happened. Don't peddle your zahil media line here. Crowd clapped for Pak even after those gesticulations. Crowd acted matured and classy.

It is a cultural thing with these uncivilized pigs. Whenever the win something or even a battle they let lose themselves of ordinary civilians.

On the bright side, the Paki hockey players didn't try to convert anyone from the field or from the crowd. Thank heavens!

May be there are some comments from the spectators, But Police protection is there. Spectators abusing sports men happens all the times in every week end in sports all over the world. But what Pakistani players did happens not quite often.

Yes, momentary pleasures! Orgasmic isn't it? It's only after that you realise that you have to wash the sheets.

Good luck playing for PKR 500 as match fees for foreseeable future. Don't look at our domestic league and ask your coach to beg for bilateral tournament and Indian financing, as he was doing in Bhubaneswar.

Sigh! wherever Pakis go, they beg!
