Cauvery row: Violence breaks out in Bengaluru, Mysuru; Metro services suspended

BENGALURU: Violence erupted in southern part of Karnataka on Monday after the Supreme Court directed the state government to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water+ to Tamil Nadu. At least half-a-dozen vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu registration numbers have been set ablaze in Bengaluru and Mysuru.

Though no casualties have been reported, tension prevailed on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway with mobs targeting Tamil Nadu trucks+ and cars. Traffic on the highway too came to a standstill as farmers' organisations and Kannada activists staged rasta-roko agitations.

According to police sources, a family travelling in a multi-utility vehicle was pulled out in Mysuru and their vehicle was set ablaze. In Bengaluru, a truck was set on fire in Timber Yard Layout while miscreants went on a stone-throwing spree in Yelahanka and Anekal.

The miscreants alleged that the Supreme Court's directive to release 12 cusecs of water till September 20 would worsen the water crisis facing the state.

They also maintained that that the attack on vehicles was also a retaliation to the assault on tourists from Karnataka in the temple town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu on Monday morning.

    Metro train services suspended

Namma Metro train services have been temporarily suspended in Bengaluru following few incidents of violence in the city.

In a recent tweet, UA Vasanth Rao, chief public relations officer, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has said, "Due to disturbance in the city due to Cauvery issue, train service has been temporarily suspended".

Chief minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to the people not to provoke and get provoked by mischief-mongers.

    My take:
The political parties are using supreme court orders as an excuse to further their interests. The court is already facing criticism internally and externally eroding its credibility. These large scale events aggravate that further.

Protests over Cauvery water dispute turn violent in Bengaluru

India's technology hub of Bengaluru deployed riot police and banned public gatherings on Monday to rein in protests as a water dispute turned violent, with cars and buses set on fire and people pelted with stones.

Television footage showed flames pouring from burnt-out vehicles as angry crowds gathered nearby, while police said the local metro network had been temporarily suspended.

The violence erupted after the Supreme Court ordered Karnataka, where Bengaluru is based, to release 12,000 cubic feet of water per second every day from the Cauvery river to neighbouring Tamil Nadu until Sept. 20.

The river has been the source of more than a century of tension between the states, and the anger has previously turned violent - in 1991 an interim court order telling Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu sparked riots against Tamils in Bengaluru, leaving more than 18 people dead.

"Rapid Action Force Teams have been deployed all over the city," Bengaluru city police said on Twitter on Monday. "We urge to all Bengalurians...Stay calm and not to be panic."

The police said later they had also imposed an emergency law known as Section 144, which prohibits gatherings in public areas.

A Reuters witness saw a group of 20 to 30 protesters, some armed with sticks and stones, stopping and searching cars.

They pulled several Tamil Nadu-registered trucks and motorcycles to the side of the road and pelted them with stones. At least one truck driver was beaten with a stick. The protesters let Karnataka-registered vehicles through the makeshift roadblock.

Police said that more than 15,000 officers had been deployed to keep the peace including riot police and border security forces.

Bengaluru is home to top Indian IT companies such as Infosys Ltd, Wipro Ltd and Mphasis as well has offices of several multinational companies like Samsung Electronics.

Media reported a small number of attacks on Tamil-owned property in Karnataka, while Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said on Twitter that he had asked his Tamil Nadu counterpart, J. Jayalalithaa, to investigate reports of violence in Tamil Nadu against people originally from his state.

Disputes over water resources are common in India, where rising demand and poor management of supplies often leads to angry protests.

Anti-national behaviour from Kanndigas, they need to be held accountable for this nonsense & violence they are spreading.

I can remember at least three occasions when in Bengaluru & Mysuru we were harassed because our registration was TN. This was several years back. Now it has started again.

You lemurians...err....dravidians solve your brotherly fight(love) yourself. Joking aside, most news i have seen, are of violence in BGLR(Ktaka) . Very little from TN. State sponsored? BTW, political talk should have been done instead of SC decision.

Errrr..actually..this time its Kannadigas(Royal Challengers ) Vs Tamilians (Chennai Super Kings).
Its kinda like olympics..happen almost every 4 years or so.

Yes..Almost every year there used to be a wrestle between Mallus, a species from Kerala(See!! These guys dont even have a team..) vs Tamilians (Chennai Super Kings) for river water sharing..most of the time its political...and the media fights it out for people of both state. The damage is mostly to the panelists on the news hour.

This is being fanned by Congress. The strike wont get anything done as SC is arbitrator. And almost all burning and violence is happening in Ktaka while little is happening in TN. But the CM Sidaramaiah writes to Jaya about protecting kannadigas in her states , and tweets about it. His govt is unpopular in Karnataka and this is being fanned for political reasons.

Also, see another act of congress

Apparently there were protests through the night. Schools and Colleges have been given holiday till 17th.
The government seems to be fanning this instead of deploying adequate police to take control of the situation.

Goes to show that India is an artificial country - there is no unity in diversity. There is only infighting. This is the history of the Hindus - fight each other all the time.

What rubbish is that. There will always be differences. Even within a family, there will be differences. This has got to do with uncontrolled hooliganism and not with religion.

you have written something controversial there.
(y'day some newspimps reported Mohan Bhagwat's statement on the Hindu ancestry of all Indians & their Hinduness regardless of following different religions & practices, as, "Mohan Bhagwat has again given a controversial statement, that all Indian citizens are Hindus and have Hindu ancestry!" the secular perversion of newspimps never fails to entertain you!)
