Catholic church in India says have more children

    Oct 11, 2011

New Delhi: Worried about its dwindling numbers, the Roman Catholic church in southern India is exhorting its flock to have more children, with some parishes offering free schooling, medical care and even cash bonuses for large families, church officials said Tuesday.

The strategy comes as India’s population tops 1.2 billion, making it the second most populous country in the world after China, and runs counter to a national government policy of limiting family size.

But in the southern state of Kerala, where Catholics have long been a large, important minority, church authorities believe the state’s overall Christian population could drop to 17 percent this year, down from 19.5 percent in 1991. While they don’t have precise numbers for the Catholic population, they believe it is also dropping sharply.

Worried about its dwindling numbers, the Roman Catholic church in southern India is exhorting its flock to have more children, with some parishes offering free schooling, medical care and even cash bonuses for large families, church officials said Tuesday.

“The Christian community in Kerala is dwindling. We realized that if the numbers decreased further, it would have a negative impact on the community,” said Babu Joseph, spokesman for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India in New Delhi.

Christianity is widely thought to have come to India in the year 52, when St Thomas came to Kerala after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

What remains unsaid in Kerala is that the state’s Muslim population grew by 1.7 percent between 1991 and 2001, while the Hindu and Christian populations have fallen.

Kerala, once a communist bastion and the state with the highest literacy rate, was about 56 percent Hindu, 19.5 percent Christian and 24 percent Muslim in the last census in 2001.

The church in Kerala is also incensed by a bill drafted by a government panel recommending a strict two-child policy to check population growth.

The bill — which is unlikely to become a law — suggests three months of imprisonment and a 10,000-rupee ($200) fine for couples with more than two children.

So Kerala’s Catholic parishes have launched a variety of programs, from free education to free medical care, said the Rev. Jose Kottayil of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council. Most begin offering the benefits with the fifth child, but the church helps poorer families with fewer children.

The St. Vincent de Paul Forane Church, in the Kerala town of Kalpetta, is offering a bond of 10,000 rupees ($200) in the name of the fifth child. The money would be deposited in a bank until the child turns 18, church officials said.

A large number of church-sponsored groups in Kerala have begun campaigns with the slogan “A large family is a happy family.”

Kottayil said the Catholic church plans to honor large families at a ceremony next month.

Church to support fifth child of each couple

Going against the grain of Kerala’s success in family planning, the Syro-Malabar church in the northern part of the state has exhorted its followers to produce more children and pocket an attractive fixed deposit. It wants parents to shrug off the “shame” of having many kids and uphold the true Christian concept of sexuality, which blends love and procreation.

Couples having their fifth child would get a one-time Rs 10,000 fixed deposit and the kid’s education would be taken care of, the Syro-Malabar church assured the faithful.

“Parents who have many children should get over any sense of shame. It is a recognition for such parents,” said Salu Abraham Mecheril, a spokesman of the pro-life committee of the church.

The fixed deposit (FD) can be redeemed after 18 years.

However, the church has not yet announced any similar offer for the sixth child onwards. The church’s largesse has come at a time when the Justice Krishna Iyer panel on population control recommended a heavy fine for those parents who have more than two children.

The number of followers of this denomination of Roman Catholicism is dwindling. In 2006, it had to issue a letter urging followers to shed “anti-life and selfish tendencies” creeping in among the faithful.

In the 2001 census, the Christian population was 19% of the total. A study by the Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad in 2004 showed its numbers came down to 18%.

Syro-Malabar church spokesman Father Paul Thekekkat said though he supported the idea, it was purely the decision of a particular parish. “The church is all for responsible parenthood. There has been a growing tendency among couples to opt out of having children. It will leave a gray population like Europe,” he warned.

I am a Hindu fanatic. But at times I lose belief in God, although inadvertently I do pray for Him to answer me

Christians population increased from 2% to approx 3% from 1947 to 2011 (after huge conversation in tribal belt). Still worried ??

Should Hindus also adopt same thing ? As population decreased from 85% to 80% in last 65 years. [Even when Millions of Hindus came from Pakistan/Bangladesh to settle in India]

What if Hindu temples announce such things and start giving money for 3rd or like above 5th Child ? will it be communal and RSS Hindutava ideology ? Welcome to Secular India where Secularism means Anti-Hindu. :thumb:

We need a law that imposes penalties upon people who provide incentives for larger families. This law should be applied across the board, to Christians, Muslims and Hindus alike.

Forget such planning as Congress (vote-bank politics party) is ruling the center :( but i hope some day they will open their eyes at least for votes, that Hindus are in majority in India and can serve as a huge Vote Bank for Congress ;)

So in school they'll learn Hum do, Hamare do
But come for prayers, they'll be told about how to exploit fertility.

Govt should direct RBI to blacklist banks which will open such accounts accepting deposit in the name of fifth child.
