Today a canister based launch of agni 5 missile test fired from wheeler islands was successful.Agni 5 could deliver a nuclear payload. This was the 3rd launch of agni 5 but first from a canister system. This gives our armed forces flexibility to operate it from anywhere on a mobile launch vehicle..Agni 5 is a first proper ICBM indigeniously made by the DRDO and BDL jointly. The range of agni 5 is over 5000km which gives ability to strike in any part of china and eastern part of europe. Agni 5 could carry a payload of 50 tonnes.

India's Agni-V missile: Five things you need to know | Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

Marking a historic day in India's nuclear deterrence, India on Saturday successfully launched its longest range ballistic missile Agni-V from the Wheeler's Island off the Odisha coast. Being triumphant in the previous two test launches (once in 2011 and another in 2012) Agni-V has now made India a missile superpower.

Agni-V is India's first intercontinental ballistic missile and is a significant achievement by the Defence Research and development Organisation of India (DRDO). The DRDO started the development of IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Project)- Agni missiles, in 1983 under the office of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Here are some interesting facts you must know about this super missile:

1. Agni-V is India's most potent missile yet and can cover a range of over 5000 kilometres in any direction. It is also a nuclear-capable missile, which means that it can carry a nuclear warhead and cover a long stretch equipped with that nuclear devise. Geographically, the missile's cover space ranges from all of China in the East to all of Europe in the West.

2. The missile is able to travel faster than a bullet and can carry with it at least a 1000 kilogram of nuclear weapon. However, the missile can only be launched on the direct orders of the Prime Minister of India and no one else. India has now joined an elite club with only Russia, China, US and France currently possessing the capability to operate an intercontinental ballistic missile.

3. The three-stage missile is about 17 meters long and weighs about 50 tonnes. The first rocket engine equipped with the missile lifts it to a height of about 40 kilometers. The second stage pushes it to about 150 kilometers. The third stage takes Agni-V to about 300 kilometers above the Earth. And the missile finally reaches a height of about 800 kilometers.

4. The indigenous developed, intercontinental, surface to surface, nuclear capable ballistic missile is unlike other missiles in the Agni series. Agni-V is the most advanced system so far, which has various new technologies incorporated in it in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine. The very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and the most modern and accurate Micro Navigation System (MINS) ensures that the missile reaches the target point within few meters of accuracy designated.

5. In India's armory of the Agni series missile, we are presently equipped with Agni-I which covers a range of 700 km, Agni-II which covers a range of 2000 kms, Agni-III which covers a range of 2500 kms and Agni-IV which covers a range of over 3500 kms. The recently launched Agni-V gives India the ability to launch nuclear weapons from anywhere in India. The missile will give India the strength to double-strike or hit back even if it gets hit in case of a nuclear strike.

India also possesses other powerful missiles like Prithvi, Akash, Nag and Trishul where all have different strike capabilities and roles. However, Agni is by far the most superior set of missiles India is in possession of and the glorious launch of Agni-V has now set India in a far superior league altogether.

@Kunal @pmaitra @LETHALFORCE @Ray

instead of the way they treated him,
what they should have done is re-org Dr Do

and separate out missile research to be a separate org
and allow "him" to continue heading that specific area
instead of what they did to him

if they only had Ms R as a consultant

all the experience and indeed success would not be lost
by the silly way they treated him
i can only hope india's loss will be limited and overcome !

he may have done great work in the past but in the last 4 years the laid back attitude of DRDO was becoming a huge problem and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comment last year that the 'laid back' attitude in the DRDO will not be tolerated was a warning and it is not that he has been sacked in middle of some DRDO crucial project .this position should not be held by a person on contract, which he was.

however he was a great contributor in agni missile program.Development of Agni range of missiles under a highly- restrictive international control regimes was possible only due to his perspective planning and relentless efforts.

Roma the projects are not dependent on one individual.
Many scientist still continue in a consultant role even after leaving?

Being in contract at any top job in govt run institutions presents a unique set of problems. Normally contract employees are not allowed to sign deals and sign cheques in govt organisations. This is the case in almost all the govt institutions. Imagine in a institutions like DRDO where top boss cannot sign contracts or release payments, I can see why relieving him is not a bad idea.

Josh, im not so acquainted with the person neither the org

my concern is that people who contributed, even if not perfect
should be treated with due regard otherwise it sets up an image
which might well deter the best graduates from wanting to be a part of it
and we get a whole generation going for MBA instead of pursuing technology
because they think , after a long career, they dont get their fair worth's recognition

- sorry , ive seen it happen in another country .- al the best brains went for a financial career
and the tech development was severely stunted.

but regarding what you described of the situation - it is really quite common
where an expert in a certain area is NOT always a good general manager

many new orgs in the usa etc are allowing an expert to get higher salaries and promotions
without having to go into general management where missile development
and mosquito repellent are in the same boat ....and i think this is the case in point ..
then you get a scenario where someone else said - that missile got top priority
and everything else go to h#$% ......that is a typical scenario of a specialist being asked
to do general management .

i wont say more than that because i'll be sticking my neck out - so this is just my opinion
and not countering you in any way.

cc: @LETHALFORCE; - youre right - an i hope it is not too far gone, i hope somehow
amends can be made to persuade him to be a consultant in his area(s) of specialty,
otherwise we may be unnecessarily wasting talent

If they launch it from Kutch or J&K or Kerala, then how far it can go as per the 5000 kms limit?

Slightly off topic. About new gen guys. Relative of mine had done IIT Gold medal then he did MBA from abroad. Now he has factory which makes gift papers. If this is all he could have done he could have done at 12th class. Its such waste of resources and talent.

I feel that Dr. Chandra should be given at least post of Governer for his contibution for the mother land. He is IIT product. He could have made millions but decided to work to secure India. That too in this difficult time.
