Well hope to see other STOBAR Carriers in service, If not in time i would still say make Virrat into STOBAR..

"This is the last major refit that INS Viraat is likely to see" a senior navy official told NDTV.

I am not sure we need her till 2021. Hopefully By 2018 we should have IAC and ViKAd' fully functional and IAC-2 getting ready for launch. The old girl has served her purpose and should hopefully become a Museum like Vikrant.

I'd much rather we remove the ski jump and use her as an amphibious landing support carrier, operating large numbers of KA-52 blacksharks of the deck to pound OPFOR forticiations and providing covering fire to amphibious landings.

2021 is the calculated in respect of previous refit which was in 2009..

But as we know now, the official report suggest it will in service till 2016, though the statement is official but can be changed as India other carriers are delayed..

Any official statement on Virat's service TIME ? 2021 ?

INS Viraat can continue for 3 more years: Antony

The navy's sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat can continue its service for another three years, the Lok Sabha was on Monday informed.

In a written reply, Defence Minister AK Antony said adequate safeguards are in place to ensure that navy's operational capabilities are not compromised during the time a ship is under refit and repairs.

He was asked whether the country does not have an aircraft carrier prowling the high seas.

"No. One aircraft carrier is currently in commission "¦ (INS) Viraat can soldier on for another three years," he said.

Antony also said that repairs and refits are planned activities and a normal feature in the life of a ship.

"Adequate safeguards are in place to ensure that the operational capabilities of the navy are not compromised during the time a ship is under refit. After completion of refit, the life of a ship gets extended depending on the nature of refit," he said.

In reply to another question, he said a contract has been signed with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for supply of 42 Su-30 MKI aircraft at a total cost of Rs 16,147.28 crore.

He also said the aircraft are planned to be delivered by 2016-17. Replying to a query on establishment of a strike corps, Antony denied that the government has shelved the proposal to raise and maintain such a corps. On proposals to export indigenously developed helicopters, Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh said, "Seven Advance Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv have already been supplied to the Ecuador."

Singh added that orders have come for supply of three Chetak and equal number of Cheetal helicopters to Suriname and Afghanistan, respectively.

Replying to a question on list of defence equipment bought under Life Cycle Cost method, Antony said, "So far only one contract i.E. Supply of Basic Trainer Aircraft, has been concluded using the total cost of acquisition model under the LCC approach."

Going off topic, but this is rather interesting.

The two sentences above put to rest all the statements that the Su-30Mki is a cheap platform, i.e. Cheaper than the Rafale or the Eurofighter, an arguement put forward by various groups opposed to the costly induction.

There was considerable speculation amongst many that HAL built the Su-30mki cost about $45-50 million a pop, and that the $4.2 billion deal for 42 Su (@$100 million a pop) was taking into consideration the lifecycle costs. Now, this article proves that the $4.2 billion deal was only for these ACs, not lifecycle costs included. As such it will be nearly as expensive as a Rafale, maybe even slightly more. (Some sources quote fly away cost of Rafale @ $90 million)

And this is without the super Sukhoi upgrades coming up, which will probably push up the costs by atleast $10-15 million a piece (nearly the price of Pak JF-17 lol). Goes to show, this will still be the most expensive fighter in IAF colours till the end of this decade. Also puts to rest the IAF hopes of inducting FGFA @ $100million.

The Pakistanis were taunting the cheap cost of the Su-30 in their forums, trying to compare it with their JF-17B2 (their estimate $30-35 mill) with the similarly priced Su-30.
