In 2009 Chrysler and GM were on the brink of financial ruin and a massive bailout was needed to put the US firms on the road to recovery.

But in a country that prides itself on free-market individualism, the state's role in the auto industry has proved a controversial issue, as the BBC's Paul Mason reports.
