A Tikhak family with monks. The Tikhak Tangsa tribe is under severe pressure to convert to Christianity by fundamentalists with the help of local militants

But, they are now in perpetual fear, particularly after the Chinese aggression of 1962, of extinction of their distinct culture and tribal faiths at the hands of Christian missionaries. In fact, this oasis of peace in the turbulent frontier region has also come under the impact of feverish proselytisation design. Although there was not a single Christian in 1951, their number rose to 1438 in 1961, 2,593 in 1971 and in 2001, the trend is quite alarming.

This is clear from the census report of 2001. Of the total population of 10,97,968, 7,05,158 are schedule tribes, constituting 64.2 per cent of total population. Of the total population of ST, 47.2 per cent has been returned as "other religion followers", besides 26.5 per cent of STs are Christians, 13.1 per cent Hindus and 11.7 per cent Buddhists. Sizeable population among Adi, Nishi, Nocte and Wancho have been converted to Christianity. Khampti, Monpa, Momba, Sherdukpen and Singpho are mostly followers of Buddhism.

Foreseeing the alarming trend of conversion activities of the missionaries, it is to be recalled, all the tribal organisations started mass movement against it and ultimately the territorial Assembly passed the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Indigenous Faith Bill 1978 providing legal and constitutional protection from conversion to other faiths alien to Arunachal Pradesh, "by force, fraud, inducement and allurement."

But despite the Act and the inner line restrictions on movement of non-tribals, missionaries could make considerable headway in bringing a sizeable number of tribals into Christian fold, particularly in Lohit and Subansiri district. Arunachalees still recall with gratitude the fold stand taken by Lt. Governor K A A Raja and the then Chief Minister Prem Khandu Thangon for the enactment of the Religious Freedom Bill in the face of stiff opposition by the Christian political leaders of Meghalaya and Nagaland and the influential ‘Shillong Churches Committee’.

The dreaded terrorist outfit National Socialist Council of Nagaland led by Isac Chish Swu, chairman, and Thuingalem Muivah, general secretary, better known as NSCN (IM) and regarded as the fountain-head of insurgency in north east region, which is claiming and campaigning for the inclusion of Naga inhabited areas of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh in greater Nagaland, has hidden its design to convert the people of these contiguous areas into Christianity.

After Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh is now the soft target of the missionaries with enormous funds from Uncle Sam’s country. It was not long ago that a group of 11 American and Canadian missionaries in the name of four-day harvest and healing festival near Itanagar induced the innocent people of the state for religious conversion. They not only camouflaged their identity but also their intent and purpose, besides four if them could make their entry in the state on the strengthen of two visas and two passports.

The Buddhists monks said that in the last days, of May 22 NSCN (IM) rebels armed with AK 47 and SLRs warned the villagers to convert to Christianity by June 4 or else face dire consequences. They have identified the militant commander leader Mitchel Lingam Tangkhul. Both the Buddhists monks have drawn the attention of the government, security forces and international Buddhists Forum towards the NSCN (IM) threat.

He threatened them to embrace Christianity and cautioned them not to celebrate any festival in glory of Buddha. The role of catholic priests of Miao Bishop’s is also reported by the Forum.

Some background information on Arunachal Pradesh's various tribes

Tangsa is a major tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. There are more than 17 sub-tribes in Tangsa. The Tikhak is one of the sub-tribes of it. The Tikhaks are inhabitants of Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh.

Some of these people have settled in Tinsukia district of Assam, adjacent to Changlang district.

The Tikhak is the oldest group to arrive at the present locations, probably in AD 1300, after the appearance of the Ahoms in Assam, India.

They have a rich culture and traditions. Their dances, like Ongle Tam, Ongle and Bongtom, are the classical form of dances. They have classical songs called Bayangsai and Rung Wang.

Famous heritage sites of Changlang district are Second World War Cemetery, Stilwell Road, Hell Gate, Ashoka (Buddha) Stupa. Namdapha National Park and Pangsau Pass on the Indo Myanmar

Wonder what the "secular" government has to say about this...

Its not only budhdhism. Its Hinduism, Islam and almost every religion is under threat from Christian missionaries and their policy of luring people to convert.

When politicians pockets are being filled with the money, who will dare to care about this.

Missionaries are clear and clever, they know where to attack. After it is money that flowing from the west to east.

Inshallah, dont worry, all will get rite soon, Amen!

I went to check my snail mail box at home 3 days back and alongwith a letter, I found a Bible :) Thats when I realised, I have never got a Gita or a Quran in my Mailbox! I already have an english bible so I gave the Malayalam edition to a vegetable seller who came by.

I remember getting my first bible in 7th grade, in the middle east, from a friend of mine. He tried to convert me :) I read the Bible, I read the Quran and the Gita and even tried out the translations of the black sea scrolls (Cant wait for it to be fully uploaded by google) all thanks to my Friend!

I dont blame Missionaries, the other religions should act up or shut up. If the Missionaries are paying people and sending kids to schools and getting converts, the other religions should do it to the poor and retain the numbers, if they believe in the number game!

I am against Forced Conversion of any sort by the way, but uplifting a person out of poverty and asking them to change religion is not a problem in my books. God Speed

Its a real story . I did by B Tech In Tamilnadu .One evening during 3rd year of my engineering I was coming back from college and took lift on a bike . He was very nice and he dropped me to my home I was very thank ful to him and invited him to our PG . he came sat there for few minutes and then he left . after that I started to get calls and he was very gentle early and was trying to check if I am a religious person or not. I rarely do puja and go to Temple etc. one sunday He invited me to church. Once I reached there I was surrounded by many preachers and they were all hell bent on converting me to a Christian that day. I had to sms my friends to come and take me out from there. That was the day I lost faith in those missionaries and I am on a mission to save innocent people from falling into their trap. I am sure there are many who faced much more worse situation than mine.

I've had a same experience BUT right inside my house! beat that!

I was in college and we had invited our neighbors for tea, and he deceivingly got these pastors and chruch planters to my house (assuming that we were liberals so would be more prone to conversions), my father tried to be a good host and entertained them, but things went out of hand when they started distributing Church literature/material defaming Hinduism with all sort of lies and claiming "this is what Hindus have been researching about Hinduism" (obviously these so called Hindus were Missionaries and self-hating leftists with Hindu names), things went out of hand and they all started Showing Mass Hysteria when they threatened us with hellfire if we dont convert and started reading Bibile out loud, we asked them to move out peacefully BUT they refused as they claimed we were the house of satan :). I intervened But they started reading their Bible out even louder and threats were flowing like crazy.... Insult of my Humble Parents as Satan worshiper was more than enough, me and my brother Got r hockey sticks and were going to give then a good one. AND Suddenly, they all ran away, vanished, we chased them down the stares BUT they ran faster (I guess they were well trained LOL).... I took my neighbor head on, he got scared and started apologizing (he knew very well what he had done), as news spread a lot of residents started coming out in open disgusted at these missionaries from a newly opened Church who were harrasing them, allowed inside the colony by our neighbor and his accomplices.

Soon, news came out that someone had thrashed these missionaries and a police case was registered (not sure about the police case) against these over zealous and delusional missionaries, since then they stooped harrasing us. But started visiting Shanty areas in and around the locality to find converts (I had heard they got beaten up there too), I can never ever forget this incident when me and my family was insulted inside our home and in-front of me, for just being tolerant and humble people, that is the day when I realized that too much of tolerance and accommodation of outsiders inside your home would make you a slave in your own house if the outsider is more organized and have devious designs. Latter on I found that this had been warned b Kautiltya BUT we were never taught about this in school.

This incident made me do more and more research on missionary activities and the results were eye-shattering.

It's no secret that many religious missions are funded by 'alien' sources worldwide. even in inland Ningxia of China Mosques mushroomed thanks to donors like Kuwait or Saudi Arabia with Mullahs receiving trainings in Egypt alike. Christian missionaries from S. Korea are especially active nowadays, from China to even Afghanistan! and in college we even had professors on a Mormon mission from Utah.

Christianity has been very instrumental in promoting and advancing 'civilization' and 'humanity'. In remote villages or primitive tribes of China or Burma alike there were/are missionaries. They even created writing scripts for tribes in SW China and taught them how to grow crops/grape. Most typically Vietnamese Romanized script (Tieng Viet), which officiallyreplaced Chinese characters completely in 1945, was created by Portuguese (and French) missionaries in the 17th century. Before that illiteracy rate was high since Chinese was so difficult and all Greek for the masses. It was missionaries who introduced modern science to China. In every (almost) city we had colleges, hospitals ... founded by different churches as early as 150 years ago.

Anyway it's individuals who decides upon which faith to embrace. Religious competition is just natural and inevitable IMO, so long as not "by force, fraud, inducement and allurement."

I cannot agree more! Arunachal Pardesh is one of the most backward, illiterate states of the country. The Hindus or Buddhists do not help the people better their lives. If the christian missionaries help them in leading a better life, we cannot complain. It is a shame the Hindu temples never involve in charity missions.

There will be loss of their tribal culture of sure. But the government should take the responsibility to preserve and promote their culture. Like the Nagas, the tribes can still protect their culture after conversion.

^^^^^ The whole argument is about militants forcing innocent tribal into conversion (especially to create a corridor for greater Nagaland) in Arunachal Pradesh, use of Gun in North East and other Tribal areas is a fact (even admitted by Maoists), the case above stated by Tshering22 is not about how "Loving Missionaries" are spreading love of god through Charity, but actually supporting local militias for conversion of Locals.

Whole Kandhmal Incident was caused by unchecked missionary (foreign included) activities, also their connivance with Maoists to arm and train newly converted Christian "Panas" into a militia to support missionaries to further their objectives, so that the resistance put up by local "Kandh" tribe could be decimated and flow of missionary work goes on without any local resistance. If you conduct lil bit of research, you will realize that all this has been happening in AFRICA for a long long time, and Missionaries have reduced local Animist and Muslim population by Millions, through the process of creation of militias (its a big time myth that Islam is fastest growing religion, at-least not in Africa). There is serious Resistance in Sudan and Nigeria by Sunni groups and they have kind of succeeded, but I can't say for how long, as Western (WCC and Baptist) controlled media has only shown one side (Islamic atrocities on Christians) of the picture but connivingly covered up the cause of Civil wars and bloodshed ((i.e OIL, Natural Resources, US---->>> Missionaries--->>Conversions (i.e loyal local support against the resistance)---> Militias)).

Same is being repeated in tribal areas of India, which are full of natural resources, time and again intelligence reports have been suggesting the same, but govt. is too secular to protect national interest to stop Demographic changes, its a historical fact that demographic change brings separatist movements and causes disruption to peace, and India is currently (historically has faced the same), however this corrupt govt. is more concerned in retaining their power so that the usual business of politicos with Bureaucrats can go on smoothly (they may not be concerned about their motherland India but surely they work hard everyday for Switzerland).

There is enough material available but lil bit of reading does not hurt:

It does not mean that if one gives money or gives education and other things, one should force the people to convert into other religion. When the Tsunami hit the Coastal Areas of Tamil Nadu and the red cross came to give relief they harrsed the people to get converted to christianity and it the people did not get converted they were not given the relief items like food, shelter, clothing and medicines and in some case they even went and converted them by force. What do these missionaries get by converting people by force? Why do they insist people to do so. "GOD" is watching and when the time comes they will be punished severly. These missionaries also tell and preach ill about other religions too. They say only their GOD is good and other religion GODS are evil. Foolishness to say like that. Why do the missionaries target INDIA in particular, why can't they go and do this in any other ISLAM dominated countries like U.A.E. They cannot do like this there. If they try anything then they will be hanged. The unity among the people who follow ISLAM is good. Other people should learn from them. But because of these missionaries, I think they are doing this for money. STOP CONVERTION BY FORCING PEOPLE TO CONVERT BY USING HARSH PROCEDURE.

Getting converted to another religion is like changing your loyalty from your motherland to the enemy of your motherland. To be clear it is like a person of INDIA, after being born in INDIA and living in INDIA for so many years and enjoying the freedom, one day suddenly when he is in a bad financial postion and a man coming and asking him to change his faith and loyalty to PAKISTAN and he forgets everything what INDIA gave him and chaning his loyalty towards PAKISTAN just because that person is giving him money and wealth. So, tommorow someone will come and tell to change his parents and he will tell that he will give money and if at all the person changes his parents for money then he is the most foolish and the most sinful person in the eyes of GOD. He will not be forgived by anyone.

Sesha, your argument is lame! What makes you think Missionaries will make you do things against your Country? Hindus and Muslims have been found to indulge in Terrorism, but AFAIK, No Christian has been found to plant a bomb in India!

If Hindus and Muslims want their poor folks to not convert, let them spend a bit of money and uplift the poor in them! Let them stop the caste discriminations! Let them be nice to people!

I come to a conclusion that, Uplifting a person out of Poverty and asking him/her to change religion is not a problem. Conversions at gun points is the crime!

If the Hindus and Muslims want to whine, let them, but I suggest they get their act together and help the poor in their religion if they so want to Stay in the Number Game! Pathetic!

Some people are acting like Changing Religion is like Changing Loyalty towards one Nation!

WTF is that? I mean, Are Christians in India Traitors? Its the thinking like this which results in Riots and Genocides! You guys better get your head in order, because If someone wants to turn against someones Nation, Religion is not the Factor! It maybe a tool, but never the sole reason!

Christians are a very peace loving community, and Strived hard along with our Forefathers to get us Freedom! Stop saying such insensitive stuff!

Its just that the Hindus/Muslims are not willing to spend some Hard Cash, and uplift some people from Poverty or Print the Gita! So the next best option is to hurl abuses and spread myths like Loyalty and all!!! CWAP!

Missionaries not Planting Bombs does not mean they are not involved in Funding Terrorist Organization, its well known fact that they have been doing this in North East (Communist Govt. of Tripura has tabled a report in state legislature in this regard), Funding to Naga rebels, Maoists (there are numerous small groups which are controlled by different churches in NE), all have been well documented, if you need further evidence you can do some research about missionary activities in Africa.

FYI missionaries usually do not target Muslims in India, though they have converted millions of Muslims in Africa. Furthermore, I would like the courts to give out a decision on Hindus planting Bombs and Conducting attacks, rather than Govt. illegally detaining suspects and trying to forge evidence, which even courts have shown disinterest in, and ATS being used as henchmen to prove something which is beyond their caliber to prove, due to lack of prima facie evidence.
