Britain Ready to Help Mamata Turn Kolkata Into London

The British government today said it is willing to assist West Bengal in its endeavour to transform Kolkata into a city like London but put a rider that the government has to create a proper environment for this.

British High Commissioner to India Richard Stagg said on the sidelines of a CII-organised interactive session that Kolkata can definitely be changed although the government is suffering from funds crunch.

He was responding to reporters' question on whether the ambition of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to make Kolkata another London is practical.

Stagg said "there is a lot of money available globally but you have to make the environment conducive".

Stagg met the state's Finance Minister Amit Mitra and offered British expertise in running a government, environment, health-care and a few other areas.

"We also want the state government to come out with their suggestions on how to work together," he said.

He said that for improving the environment, governments can bid for the USD 4.5 billion global grant fund created by the Britsh government.

Stagg said he was disappointed by Indian government not further opening up the retail and financial sector.

    In other words:
    • No fast-unto-death threats.
    • No hobnobbing with Maoists.
    • No passing of bills that are ultra vires.
    • No hooliganism.

Not from Mamta's side, but I doubt CPM and CPI would be sitting idle, you can expect them to do the same things that Mamta did during Singur and Nandigram.

Forget Kolkata, WB Government should focus on other cities like Burdwan, Durgapur, Haldia and Siliguri.

    What these cities need badly:
    • Inter-connectivity by highways of at least 4 lanes.
    • Inter-connectivity by railways via chord lines and not the existing tracks.
    • Reliable and uninterruptible supply of electricity.
    • Reliable and uninterruptible supply of water.
    • Housing projects.
    • Industrial parks.
Kolkata is saturated and things needs to move out of Kolkata and go out into the hinterland and the cities therein.

Now I know reasons behind the riots in london!
On a serious note, they need to make more satellite cities like salt lake and rajarhat, core calcutta is as developed as any other metros.

Overall I dont think people in west bengal vote keeping the future in mind, and politics is infested with dopey left leaning gurudas, ashutosh pass outs, frogs of well they are. present govt is making committees, pulling off gimmick and people are worshipping her as if she is abatar of maa durga!

Heck how can someone make industry without providing land for it.

Now you do realise what we have discussed in the Anna Thread, right? Some of us kept on saying that it is the moronic people who keep voting incapable politicians to office.

The difference is that people in West Bengal have lost sight of the potentially bright future for the sake of hanging onto the fading dream of status quo, while people in many other states have learnt to vote at least more sensibly. No risk, no gain and people are not willing to take that risk. You cannot really blame Mamata much if the people get enchanted by her shenanigans and vote for her.

Just to clear the air, the two symbolic instruments of communism, the hammer and the sickle are supposed to go together. Jyoti Basu has always favoured the sickle and neglected the hammer for decades, then came Buddha who tried to favour the hammer and got some initial good results and now Mamata has come and brought back the same Jyoti Basu's policies of favouring the sickle and neglecting the hammer.

If Kolkata becomes even 1% better, it would do a world of good.

Forget such daydreams of it being turned into London.

    Let us not dream.

It is just another vote catching symbol like Mumbai being another Shanghai!

Delhi alone has become something, it being the capital and well funded.

Atleast Jyoti Basu pulled off Land reform, I don't see present govt to do anything but making committees, doling out deadlines to maoists, and making nonviable claims. May be we should give her some time to settle in.

True, he did pull of land reform and in those times, it benefited Bengal so much that we were the top rice and fish producing state in India. Now, however, our population has increased manifold but not our land. So those same old tricks won't work anymore and the 'smart' Bengalis still haven't realised that. They will, when it bites hard, but then it would be too late. Mamata will also realise that there is one thing called dreaming big and another thing called reality and pragmatism.
