Brahmos “Block-IV”: The Indian Supersonic ‘Carrier Killer’

Brahmos has successfully travelled from “mind to market” in a spectacular journey within a very short span of time. The Brahmos joint-venture was established between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPOM in February 1998to design and develop a high-speed, high-precision, ‘fire & forget’ tactical weapon. With the excellent scientific and technical cooperation between the two partnering nations, Brahmos was conceived, designed, developed and successfully test-fired for the first time in June 2001.

Today, Brahmos boasts of being a universal, versatile, state-of-the-art weapon capable of being launched from multiple platforms for multiple missions. The JV has established a robust military industrial complex in both India and Russiain which large number of public and private sector industries, laboratories and institutions are developing producing and supplying numerous systems and components for the Brahmos weapon system.

Existing Variants of Brahmos Missile ::

For the Army, Brahmos Aerospace has developed the mobile land-attack Brahmos with Block-1, Block-II and Block-III configurations for different missions. For the Navy, both the anti-ship and land-attack variants have been developed and deployed. The Indian Air Force has deployed the land-attack version of the system. The modified air launched version of Brahmos is undergoing test and trials with the Indian Air Force and soon will be deployed operationally.

Newer Variants Under Development ::

The newer variants of the weapon would be Brahmos-NG, a smaller and smarter version of existing Brahmos for the air launch platform exclusively for Indian Air Force. Brahmos-II (K) is also under development stage, which would be a hypersonic missile with a top speed of mach 5-7. Brahmos Aerospace is also developing an advanced ‘Block-IV’ configuration missile for the army which will have a 90-degree steep dive attack capability and such kind missile could also be used as a “carrier killer” weapon, if need be.

Export of Brahmos Missile System to Other Friendly Nations ::

The inter-governmental agreement (IGA) that was signed between India and Russia in February 1998 made provision for exporting Brahmos to third countries which are friendly to both the partnering nations. The world over, weapon are exported on a government-to-government basis. It is for the Indian government to decide whom it wants to export to. So, export is on our top priority list and we are negotiating with a number of countries at present to sell the weapon, Brahmos Aerospace has excellent production facilities and supply chain management to meet export quality.

Did India Hide a Failed Supersonic Missile Test?

http://thediplomat.com/2016/05/did-india-hide-a-failed-supersonic-missile-test/

video 1- Failed Prithvi test from early 90's
video 2- Failed Prithvi + GSLV GSAT 5P failure Launch failure(Just FYI the GSLV program has had 3 failures in 10 launches) + Failed Astra AAM Launch + Nirbhau failed test
video 3- same old crap as in the videos above

As far as any Russian Expert saying anything, No Nation in the world today has a 100% successful Ballistic missile defence system. They very fact that we have a Partially deployable system puts us in the league of the US & Russia who are the only two other nations to have built a deployable system(China's system is still in development with many failed tests).
The Indian ABM system will be bolstered in the coming years with Super Swordfish LRTR 7 S400 interceptors as well.India is also building a 2nd tier of Interceptors called AD1 & AD2.
As for the Dick measuring contest on range many here are indulging in let me just say we do not need anything more than AGNI 1 with it's 700km range to turn 500km wide Pakistan into ashes.
As far as nuclear weapons are concerned India is known to have an active thermonuclear program with 200kt being the standard size of the Indian Thermonuclear arsenal, there are reports of 2 Mt warheads as well.
Pakistan was transferred the Chinese 30kt designs during the Lop Nor tests of the 80's, the largest verifiable pakistani weapon is a 30kt simple atomic bomb.do the math!

MTCR benefit: India, Russia to develop 600-km range cruise missiles that can cover entire Pakistan

NEW DELHI: India's offensive capacity, especially against Pakistan, is set to take a huge step forward with New Delhi and Moscow deciding to jointly develop a new generation of Brahmos missiles with 600 km-plus range and an ability to hit protected targets with pinpoint accuracy.

This range enables these missiles to strike anywhere within Pakistan. That Russia can work with India to produce these missiles is thanks to New Delhi joining the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in June this year.

MTCR guidelines prohibit its members from transfer, sale or joint production of missiles beyond 300-km range with countries outside the club.

Brahmos' current range is 300 km, which makes it difficult to hit targets deep inside Pakistan. India has ballistic missiles with longer range than the next generation Brahmos. But Brahmos' ability to take down specific targets, even well-protected ones, makes it a potential game changer in any conflict with Pakistan. Ballistic missiles are powered for the initial half of their flight path and they use gravity to complete their trajectory. But cruise missiles are powered throughout.

This makes a cruise missile like Brahmos similar to a pilot-less fighter jet that can be maneuvered in flight, programmed to attack targets from any angle and evade enemy missile defence systems. Brahmos can, for example, take down terror camps or hideouts even in mountain areas, where natural protection makes any other offensive action, bar crossing the border, ineffective.

The Indo-Russian agreement, signed during the bilateral summit at Goa, also includes development of missiles with smaller range that can be fired from submarines and aircraft. The deal was not made public at the summit — where other projects like sale of frigates and the S-400 air defence system purchase — were announced. Vladimir Putin told journalists from his country that the missile deal has also been signed. "We have also agreed to improve the Brahmos missile, which will be land, air and se ..

ET spoke with several senior Indian officials involved in negotiations. They confirmed that a pact to double the range of the Brahmos missile was finalised. These officials spoke on the condition they not be identified. They also said producing longer-range Brahmos will not be tough because no fundamental reworking is involved in increasing the range. India, post its MTCR membership, is also pursuing export options for its 300-km range Brahmos. Vietnam has expressed interest in the missile syste ..

The 600km Brahmos will have multiple benefits on multiple fronts
1)Alongwith the BARAK 8ER it basically turns the IN into the most potent Naval force in the IOR, ship for ship .
2)Alongwith growing satellite imagery capabilities it gives us the power to strike at all targets of Interest within Pakistan including TELs, RADAR Sites & communications blocks within 12-15 minutes.

Now it is a death warrant for Chinese ships and subs as our ships & ssns will packed with improved Brahmos of 600km range. Imagine FGFA & Super Sukhoi flying each with 3 Brahmos-NG (650km+ range)!! Enemy should indeed fear now.

Russia seems to be playing double game with China:scared2:. What did China do to piss off Russia so badly I wonder.

We won't need to use costly Brahmos to target Pakistan, after loosing control over first few hundred kilometers Pakistani state will cease to exist hence additional range makes no sense in this theater.

A versatile platform like Brahmos with extended range of 600km seems to be primarily targeted towards hardened Chinese assets in Tibet.

Deploy few of the extended range naval versions at A&N islands and enjoy the picture of the Chinese surface combat ship captains soiling their pants from a safe distance.

I think this time it is more of a balance of payments issue rather than a strategic issue. Low oil prices have hit them hard.

As far as russia china relationship is concerned, I have to assume they have the same problem as us. China is too bigger an neighbouring economy to ignore.

One way to check this out is how many times Russians and Chinese are voting the same way at UNSC. This will give an if they have become strategically aligned.

They are both anti USA . So on issues involving America they will seem aligned.

Real test of that Alliance will come from central Asia where china wrests Russian influence.

‘Air-launched version of BrahMos missile to be tested in February’

Raja Singh Thangadurai
The air-launched version of BrahMos missile will be tested in February, said Raja Singh Thangadurai, Deputy Programme Director, BrahMos, Defence Research and Laboratory, (DRDL), Hyderabad.
Speaking to The Hindu after inaugurating a science exhibition at Aurobindo International School here on Saturday, Mr. Thangadurai said that the design and development of the air-launched version of the missile from the SU-30 MKI fighter of the Indian Air Force had almost been completed.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) had carried out modification of the fighter aircraft to carry the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. Work had been taken up with the Sukhoi design bureau, HAL and the IAF for interface requirements and installation of BrahMos on Su-30 MKI fighter. The final stage preparation and fine-tuning of the air launch weapon system was in progress, he said.
Stating that the launcher modification had already been completed, Mr. Thangadurai said that dummy trial with instrumented drop from the SU-30 aircraft was carried out at Pokhran in Rajasthan a few weeks ago. The performance and the results were successful and highly encouraging. However, two more dummy drop trials would be carried out before launching the actual test. The dummy trials would be conducted in the weeks to come, Mr. Thangadurai said.
He added that the Centre had given clearance for identifying markets for the missiles. Chile and Indonesia had shown interest. Modalities were being worked out for marketing the missiles, he said.

The missile is already capable of 600 clicks. The range has been restricted to 300 as part of MTCR reasons. There were hints that once sold Army could or already modified them in the field to unleash full range.

Air launched brahmos was initially expected to be a shorter version ... But it is the full missile. So if 600 km is for ground launch, then how much for air launch from say 2 km altitude at 800 kmph?

in that scenario(launched from a height) this missile will have 600+ range because the missile need not have to work to attain altitutde & initial speed.so lot of fuel will be saved it will just start cruising the moment its lauched from the Sukhoi..
