A KVI-101S laser transmitter installed at the western border
DNA Exclusive: India upgrades tech, puts up virtual wall to 'seal' Pakistan border
A laser wall across LoC.
Drawing a virtual border inside Pakistan, motion sensors and a technology upgrade for laser walls that will detect any break-ins are part of the high-tech plan to strengthen the India-Pakistan international border against infiltration.
In a breakthrough for border defence systems in the country, the Border Security Force (BSF) upgraded the laser wall technology being used along the border in late September- early October, it is learnt. Using infra red rays and laser beams, the laser walls cannot just detect when there is a breach but can also tell differentiate between man and beast.

BSF officers stand next to a laser transmitter at the western frontier
Earlier this year, the BSF had confirmed the installation of CRON laser walls at certain areas along the border, after a wait of two years, post the decision. These virtual walls will keep a vigil on intrusion attempts from across the western border.
"The surgical strike made the situation at the borders more tense and we were requested to upgrade all existing systems with the newer KVI-101S (technology) since the BSF believes that this time around the intrusion attempts will increase," said Tushar Chhabra, founder of CRON Systems. "The plan is to cover the entire frontier with the new laser walls by February-March next year," he told DNA.

Though minor upgrades of the intrusion detection systems were done over the months, it was following the surgical strike that a new series of virtual laser walls were installed on eight kilometres of the border.
"The KVI-101S system requires very little human intervention, has smarter detection capabilities and the encryptions are hack-proof. The previous technology was not capable of managing in marshy lands, which is the condition in most frontier areas. With the new KVI series, that problem has been resolved," Chhabra said.

The new technology, he explained, uses next generation IR optics to provide all weather and harsh terrain early detection capabilities.
According to former BSF inspector general Rakesh Sharma, who first adopted the technology,``Human error can never be neglected and therefore BSF needs the latest technology to guard our borders because the counterpart will never stop attempting (to intrude). I am proud to know that these systems are being made in India."
What's next
While the laser walls are already up, India is also planning to look beyond the actual international border (IB) by drawing virtual borders inside Pakistan. Hoping to "completely seal" the international border with Pakistan in the next two years, home ministry officials explained that GPS coordinates of longitude and latitude fixed at least 200 metres to one kilometre inside Pakistan side would be used as a virtual border. This would be continuously monitored by a sequence of high definition and thermal imaging cameras fitted on balloons and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
"We are planning to use this kind of latest high end technology in areas that are inaccessible due to the very difficult terrain. The idea is to check the infiltration attempts before the terrorists reach the actual border; for this, the key is having enough response time in hand," an official told DNA.
The plan to plug the unguarded 181.85 kilometre part of the border also includes other high end technologies like ground penetrating radars, motion sensors, thermal imagers, smart fences, speedboats, hovercrafts and drones. Though it looks easy on paper, officials admitted that it would be extremely tough to complete the task by December 2018 as these patches run through the marshlands of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, the sands of Rajasthan and the riverine region in Punjab and Jammu where rivers and nullahs crisscross the international border in many places.
"We need different technology and different barrier strategy for each terrain because of their dissimilar natures," said the official.
In the marshy area of Kutch, where movement is difficult, balloons and UAVs with high definition mounted cameras and hovercrafts on ground may be used. In the riverine patches, a favourite infiltration route that official believe was used for the Dinanagar and Pathankot attacks, a variety of surveillance equipment like motion sensors, infrared and thermal imagers, UAVs and high speedboats as well as choppers for quick response are likely to be deployed.
In Rajasthan. where shifting sand dunes make the three-four metre high fences redundant, the ministry plans to increase the height of the fences to 10-12 metres high as well as deploy motion sensors and ground penetrating radars to check tunnels.
While bringing in technology is not a problem, the biggest challenge before the ministry is to train BSF personnel. "For this we need jawans with both brain and brawn who have the mindset to adapt to the new technology. The next two years will also be dedicated to train and induct a large number of BSF personnel who can effectively put the new technology to use," said the official.
While the border between India and Pakistan runs for about 3,000 kilometres, the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Kashmir between the two countries is about 800 kilometres. Of the 182 odd kilometres of unguarded border, about 30 are in Rajasthan where the sand dunes keep shifting, 55 in the marshlands of Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and 100 in riverine areas of Punjab and Jammu.
A further upgradation of the laser wall with a system called miCRON, which will enable encrypted communication for five-layer fencing, complete automation of border holding, is being designed and manufactured in India. The pilot will be seen in February-March in Jammu. This will make the Jammu border one of the most Intrusion proof borders in the world.
CRON also confirms in its website that it is working working on automated drones and smart fencing. This will add an additional layer of defence to India's borders and critical facilities.

India to have patrol-free, multi-layer smart fence along Pakistan, Bangladesh borders
India will have a patrol-free, multi-layered smart fence along its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh by the second half of 2017, the Press Trust of India news agency reported Wednesday.
According to the news agency, Border Security Force (BSF) Director General (DG) K.K. Sharma said the force is working on implementing a Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) where the security of the two "sensitive and difficult terrain" borders will shift from the regular troops patrolling system to a quick reaction team pattern where guards strike once they notice a blip of infiltration on their surveillance radars.
The Indian home ministry has approved of the project, Sharma added.
"We are making concerted efforts to modernise our border fence. Twenty big companies are currently conducting a technical evaluation for the CIBMS. It is expected that it would be on ground by the second half of next year.
"A few pilot projects are already on ... two in Jammu and one each in Punjab and Gujarat where we have marshy areas," the DG said.
He also said that the aim of BSF, India's largest border guarding force with about 250,000 personnel in its ranks, is "to modernise itself", thereby minimising human error and inaccuracy as much as possible.
Sharma further said that once the CIBMS becomes operational, aided by laser fence, surveillance radars, satellite imagery and thermal gadgets, the troops on ground will respond when they detect an infiltration bid in the multi-tier security ring, comprising the regular fence as well as laser walls.
He said the force is also looking into gadgets and securing technical support to tackle dangers presented by hidden tunnels running across the Indian borders.
Sharma said the force was in touch with countries like Israel as well as elite Indian technology institutes to procure the right technology.
"We are in the process to plug breaches by technical solutions at both Pakistan and Bangladesh borders," he said.
Additionally, Sharma said all 'intrusions' in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 took place from the Line of Control, which is guarded by the Indian Army.
Don't get wondered that why they put intrusion in quotes indicating that they call it fake. Because my source is Pakistani Newspaper Dawn.:p
"We do our best to stop (infiltrators/militants). To a very large extent we are successful. This year whatever intrusions have taken place, I can assure you, have been from the Line of Control. I take guarantee that we will not allow these attempts to succeed from the IB which I (BSF) guard," he said.

^ I am very skeptical that is can be done across thousands of kilometres along all kinds of terrains...also would be ridiculosly expensive.Better option would be to take back PoK.

imho we need to unify our border forces in to one entity rather than the 3 distinct entities that guard our borders at the moment and create a unfied home command with a shared pool of resources from C3RI to Avation this unified force will remain distinct from the army but will act as an extension of the army in a border confrontation situation

Laser walls on Indo-Pak border in Punjab by Dec 18

AMRITSAR: All infiltration prone porous points on the Indo-Pak international border in Punjab will be sealed off with laser walls by December 18 to thwart infiltration. Sources in the Border Security Force (BSF) said the force is in the process of installing laser walls and other surveillance equipment at all the 41 points identified by it.

“Each laser wall will secure an area of 250 to 500 meters, depending upon the terrain. Around 200 laser walls will be installed,’’ said a BSF official.

Most of these ‘walls’ have been procured from DRDO and from the R&D wing of the BSF. The lasers will detect movement and beam the exact location to the BSF. They will be monitored through an advanced satellite-based signal command system equipped with night and fog visibility tools. The decision to install laser walls was taken by the BSF in 2014.

Underground devices have also been placed in the areas along the border, which will notify the BSF control centre.

BSF’s R&D wing has also developed battlefield surveillance radar and handheld thermal imagers, which will be placed along the border.

What are your thoughts about the BSF Jawan who posted the viral video?

Sad reality!

Everything in the armed forces is not holier- than -thou,if there are officers who often pay from their personal income for the welfare of jawans then there are also those who are corrupt, egotistical.

He is pointing towards corruption in supplies, where the supplies are sold in outside market by the person in charge instead of being given to the soldiers. An outside panel must probe it and punish the guilty .Government should place a system to check such scams and address complaint of corruption in armed forces.

Exactly. Is there any way we can hammer these babus to take action on officers who starve our soldiers?

Sadly I couldn't find any DFI post/threads discussing this issue. I saw a Pakistani defence forum thread where they are bloody mocking us, and telling them they need to "eat beef."

BSF Jawan's Explosive Claims Shock India

Accuser: Tej Bahadur Singh, BSF 29th Battalion.
Tej Bahadur Singh: Complaint not against the government, but against senior officers of BSF. BSF soldiers have long duty of 11 hours in snowy locales, and often go hungry. Where the food allocated for BSF soldiers are sold needs to be investigated. Request to PM for investigation.
Interviewee: Prakash Singh, Former DG of BSF.
Prakash Singh: Has not seen the video. Not aware whether the accuser approached the normal grivance redressal channels. This could be a matter of indiscipline or foolishness. BSF men should be properly taken care of.

because we are more focus on cricket and bollywood stars....
just for a comparision , three cricketets were initially denied bail on the alligation of match fixing and have to spent in jail for almost a month ,....and media , social media make their life hell , same with ompuri....

on the other side ex-navy chief was given bail even after cbi has a tight case against him....and heardly any one picked it on news channals or on social media....
