ANOTHER convoy hit, this has happened to the security forces (IA, CRPF, BSF) how many times in JK and the NE in the past 18 months? This is becoming all too predictable- the terrorists are hitting blatently "soft" targets; unarmoured buses and troop trucks. Why the f*ck are security forces being moved around in known "hot zones" in soft skin vehicles?? They are an obvious target and the terrorists are clearly wise to this and are hitting them again and again and AGAIN.

This is classic gorilla warfare, they can't face the security forces head on so hit them at their weakest but the security establishment keep presenting them with the same target over and over- it's criminal! These poor chaps don't have a single centimetre of armoured protection when they are travelling in those buses/trucks. The current SOP is to have a "road opening party" (in armoured vehicles) to accompany these (unarmoured) troop transports but there is an obvious flaw in this method- once the road opening party has passed on by the terrorists can wait in the kill zone for the easy targets, and simply mow down those poor guys.

When traveling in these hot zones every single security man should be in full combat gear (including with their PPE) AND in an armoured vehicle.

This pattern is all too clear to see...

I read IA has ordered more maruti gypsy . Why don't they change armoured vehicle?

First we have to stop making the assumption that security agencies do not know what they are doing.

Attack on BSF convoy is a change is tactics by tangos, counter tactics are deployed based on threat perception by security agencies.

India to build border defences like Israel

India is planning to build impregnable defences along the borders with Pakistan in a project modelled after Israeli security mechanisms, according to highly-placed official sources.

OPERATION CHAKRAVYUH

Code-named Operation Chakravyuh, the project aims to plug any possible routes for terrorists to infiltrate into India, be it land, air or sea, top military and home-ministry sources told India Today TV.

Under Operation Chakravyuh, a network of highly-sensitive censors, radars, cameras, optical fibre and automatic guns will be laid along the Pakistan border, which will be linked to a round-the-clock control room they said.

RESEARCH UNDERWAY

Authorities have already done preparatory work for installation of detection devices underground and undersea, according to the sources. Six types of censors will be used in the border-securing scheme. To start with, locations have been identified in Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat to induct equipment at every few kilometres as part of an initial project starting this month, defence and BSF sources said.

INITIAL PHASE IN J&K

The BSF will spend between Rs 18 and Rs 20 crore in Jammu and Kashmir alone for the initial phase of the overall plan, according to official documents accessed by India Today TV. Devices are being procured from several companies for the first round of the project. Radars with 360-degree detection capabilities will alert control rooms about potential infiltrations. There will be active cameras and subsequently there will be automatic guns to shoot intruders down on the spot, officials explained.

Similarly, large underground and undersea censors will beam scanned images of infiltrators back to the control room for swift response. Besides, airborne versatile micro-aerostat balloons fitted with highquality surveillance cameras along the borders will monitor the skies. All systems will be integrated together for coordinated action, sources said.

Following Discovery of Pakistani Terror Tunnel Into Its Territory, India to Purchase Advanced Border-Defense Systems From Israel

India is seeking to purchase hundreds of millions of shekels-worth of Israeli defense systems to help the country defend itself against the infiltration of terrorists across its border with Pakistan, Israel’s Channel 2 reported on Thursday.

According to the report, this was decided during a recent trip to Israel by Indian Minister of Home Affairs Shri Rajnath Singh, who had a chance to examine a wide array of radar equipment, above-ground and underground sensors for movement and tunnel detection, electro-optic observation systems and weapons. In addition, Singh toured Israel’s border with Gaza, where he was given the opportunity to observe real-time operations.

“Such systems are just what we need,” he said at the time.

The impetus for the purported purchase of such defense equipment, according to Channel 2, was the discovery, some three months ago, of a tunnel shaft on India’s side of its border with Pakistan.

In the coming months, Israeli experts will begin placing the advanced equipment along the India-Pakistan border and training Indian soldiers to operate them.

Pakistan has been accused by India and the West of being a state sponsor of terrorism, second only to Iran. Several terrorist attacks have been committed in India by Pakistani nationals. Among the most notorious of these occurred in 2008, when Pakistani terrorists killed more than 170 people, and wounded more than 300, in Mumbai.

The purchase by India of border-protection devices from Israel is one of many joint military and other ventures between the two countries.

On Thursday, according to a report in Defense News, officials from India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Israel Aerospace Industries released a statement about a cooperative program combining “the Indian Air Force MRSAM – a medium-range, land-based version of the longer-ranged Barak-8 system produced for the Indian and Israeli navies.”

These officials said that they had witnessed three flight tests, simulating “different extreme reference scenarios validating various system capabilities,” which “successfully destroyed targets simulating enemy threats.”

“This is an important milestone in the cooperation between India and Israel and in the development of the MRSAM advanced air defense system,” said the head of the DRDO.

As The Algemeiner reported at the end of May, Ohad Horsandi, a spokesman at the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi, said that both the Indian public and the Modi government view Israel as a partner in many successful cooperative endeavors, such as security, technology, agriculture, water and innovation

Three Pakistani intruders shot dead by BSF

Three Pakistani intruders were today shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) following an encounter in Darya Mansoor area along the India-Pakistan border. A BSF official said a night patrol party of the force spotted the three Pakistani intruders entering Indian territory and asked them to surrender. However, they ignored the warning and kept on marching towards the BSF patrol party and opened fire. In the ensuing encounter, three Pakistani intruders were killed, the official said.
However, two of the intruders managed to flee back towards the Pakistani side, the official said. The encounter took place in Darya Mansoor area, around 15 kilometres from the border village of Ajnala in Amritsar district. The intruders, who are in their twenties, are yet to be identified. After the encounter, BSF recovered three Pakistani mobiles and Indian currency from the spot. Inspector General of BSF from Jalandhar along with senior officials was rushing to the encounter site to take stock of the situation.

India to Lay Optic Fiber Communication Cables Along Border With China
India's armed forces will be equipped with a new uninterrupted communication system in the difficult terrain of the Himalayas.

India is considering revamping its decades-old communication systems in areas along the border with China.
Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar said in India's Parliament that he was seriously considering the suggestion of equipping the roads near the Indo-China border with an optical fiber network.
India has identified 73 roads along the border as strategic Indo-China border roads; their total number's estimation is scheduled to be completed by 2020. Out of the 73 roads, 22 roads with an aggregate length of 707.74 km have already been equipped.
Rumel Dahiya, Deputy DG, Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses, says, "Communication is a big problem in higher altitude regions. If we want to make the communication foolproof, we have to go for optical fiber. Physical lines can very easily be dismantled or disconnected. As it is, they do not have much capacity to transmit large volumes of communication. Satellite communication is highly susceptible to various kinds of obstructions. Line of sight communication is not possible in the terrain along the Indo-China border. Communication between valleys is not possible as there are ridges in between. Therefore, optic fiber cables are not only important in strategic terms but equally important for civilian purpose."
Of late, there have been a number of reports on the growing dissent among people living in India's northern border regions, which is attributed to the region's slow progress in infrastructure development in comparison with the Chinese side, where the infrastructure build up is massive.
India hopes that by strengthening its communication facilities in those areas, such dissent will be negated.
Indians living along the mountainous frontier regions currently rely on satellite communication, which is highly susceptible to obstructions caused by bad weather conditions.

Another Wani from Valley protects India, joins BSF after topping recruitment exam
Rajnath Singh said he was immensely happy to meet Nabeel. (PTI image)
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nabeel Ahmad Wani will join the BSF as an assistant commandant.
  • Rajnath Singh met Wani and congratulated him
  • Government officials said Nabeel joining the force would send a positive message to J&K youth.
NEW DELHI: After over two months of continuing unrest in the Kashmir Valley due to the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani by the security forces, another Wani, also from the Valley and a recruitment exam topper, has joined the Border Security Force (BSF).
Nabeel Ahmad Wani, 26, will join the largest border guarding force as an assistant commandant. While Nabeel, who was in Delhi on Sunday to meet Union home minister Rajnath Singh, could not be contacted, TOI spoke to his mother, Hanifa Begum, in Udhampur over the phone. "I am very happy. My son's dream has been fulfilled. I know he will work with honesty and dedication and will bring laurels to the country," she told TOI. "Every boy and girl (in the Valley) should follow their dreams and they will achieve them one day. They should work hard and make India proud," Hanifa Begum said.
Rajnath Singh said he was immensely happy to meet Nabeel. "The success story of Nabeel shows that youth in Jammu and Kashmir have a lot of potential, his success will inspire many young boys and girls in the state," he added.
Government officials said Nabeel joining the force would send a message to J&K youth misguided by anti-India forces: that they can get a good education and jobs, and work to build a stronger J&K and India.
Nabeel, a BTech from Pathankot, Punjab, told TV channels that unemployment was the biggest problem for J&K's youth and only education could solve it. "The more educated we are, the better jobs we will get. We cannot get education by taking up stones but by holding a pen," Nabeel, currently a contractual junior engineer in Udhampur, said.
"I had made it my aim to join the security forces. I appeared in various exams, including for the armed forces and BSF. I am happy I topped the BSF assistant commandant exam. I belong to a village. My mother and father supported me," he said.
He completed his BTech in 2012 after a senior secondary education from NITL Higher Secondary School in Udhampur. While studying he would earn money teaching others and send funds to a sister studying engineering in Chandigarh. He won a government minority scholarship for higher education. Wani first sat for the exam for assistant commandant in 2013, but did not make it. This year he stood first.
Nabeel lost his father, Rafiq Ahmad, a schoolteacher, two years ago. His mother is a housewife and supported his dream.
In Delhi, Nabeel also met BSF chief K K Sharma, NSA Ajit Doval, home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, the IB and RAW chiefs, and other senior officials.

Good initiative, but we should not keep patronizing muslims of the valley any better than equally respecting all the troops equally.

Remember, Kashmir was not an islamic land ever to begin with and all religious conflict they caused is their own doing. Not the natives' fault who are in exile to this date.

Startup Tonbo Imaging keeps watch over India’s borders

Tonbo Imaging will help deploy sophisticated technology to detect and visualise objects in all types of conditions.
BENGALURU: The next time terrorists try infiltrating a military base, they may have to contend with the high-tech prowess of an Indian startup which could be working hand in hand with the defence establishment to thwart attacks of the kind that killed 18 soldiers in Uri.
Tonbo Imaging, a Bengaluru-based company which already partners with the Indian military, will help deploy sophisticated technology to detect and visualise objects in all types of conditions, thus providing vital intelligence that can secure assets and save lives. "We are helping them with night-vision technology and night-vision equipment to make our bases more secure," said Arvind Lakshmikumar, the CEO of Tonbo.
"We are involved in fortifying Pathankot (the air base which was attacked in January) right now. We are working with the Northern Command (of the army) after the Uri attack."

Tonbo's technology specialisation revolves around imaging, specifically thermal imaging, which provides enhanced vision in low-light conditions using heat signatures.
That technology has helped Tonbo crack defence deals with armed forces in India and abroad, a remarkable feat given the closed nature of the defence market and the fact that Tonbo was founded in 2008.
For instance, in 2014, the Ministry of Defence issued a tender for procuring 12.7 mm remote-controlled machine guns. The who's who of global defence manufacturing — from BAE Systems to Thales — queued up for the Rs 1,800-crore contract. In the end, only two companies made the cut — Israel-based defence electronics manufacturer Elbit, and Tonbo Imaging, which had partnered with UK's EMDigital.
Tonbo specialises in products like advanced night-vision cameras, firecontrol systems and drone reconnaissance using thermal imaging. As a result, Tonbo's products has been snapped by the likes of DARPA, an arm of the US Department of Defence (DoD), US Navy SEALs and US Special Operations Command.
"They build their systems which are as easily usable as a smartphone. Very user-friendly, easy to integrate with other systems," said Lucas Larry Arnold, a retired Major General in United States Air Force, a Tonbo customer for the past four years. Arnold now serves as the chairman of US-based security firm Chevron Star Corporation.
'PILOTS WITH TESLA, UBER'
Tonbo also makes driver vision systems for self-driving cars which enables an automobile to identify obstacles, drive through fog, rain, and other bad weather conditions. Its technology and track record have earned it call-ups from Tesla Motors and Uber for heads-up displays and self-driving technology, according to Lakshmikumar. "We are doing pilots with them," he said.
Also, Tonbo Imaging is a rare Indian startup to supply its products to CRPF, NSG and the Army Northern Command. Tonbo has provided advanced vision system products for the Indian Army's Arjun battle tanks which are currently undergoing their second round of field trials. "It is important for a soldier driving a tank to be able to see in bad weather conditions. The sensors are equally effective in day and night operations," said Lakshmikumar, an alumnus of BITS-Pilani and Carnegie Mellon University who worked in engineering services companies like Honeywell and built advanced vision systems for large defence contractors in the US.
"The fact that we sold our products to a lot of international clients helped gain the trust of the Indian government," Lakshmikumar said. "Now our Indian programme is starting to eclipse our foreign programmes."
In 2008, Sarnoff Corporation and Stanford International Research had a management buyout and was renamed Tonbo (Japanese for dragonfly), a tribute to an insect which sees in ultra-HD with thousands of lenses in its eyes. Tonbo received funding of $6.4 million from US-based Artiman Ventures in 2013. It is now in talks with investors to raise up to $30 million.
"The value of programmes where we are prime suppliers is over $300 million," said Lakshmikumar, estimating a sales pipeline of $50 million and operating margins of 30%. Tonbo has about 100 employees across three offices - India, Singapore, and the US — and has sold to over 25 countries including Singapore, US, Taiwan, France, Greece, UK, Canada and Peru. In Turkey, it helps the military fight Islamic State militants.
FOCUS ON CORE TECH
So, how has Tonbo managed to crack a closed market dominated by global giants? The answer is the company's focus on core technology.
Tonbo designed its night-vision cameras with "multiple fusion sensors" which use both thermal and visible fusion. "Our process of designing the camera allows the user to see better," said Lakshmikumar. "All our cameras are built on Qualcomm snapdragon processor — the same chip which powers your mobile phone is what powers our nightvision devices." The company focuses on design while "non-core" activities like manufacturing is outsourced to contract manufacturers. "This allows us to be 50% cheaper than the nearest competitor," Lakshmikumar said.

LoC to get extra security layer, better detection technology

In a recent report, MAC had estimated that more than 80 infiltrators had crossed LoC in the April-August period.
NEW DELHI: Monitoring the Line of Control (LoC) better is high on the government's agenda after the Uriterrorist attack. A second layer of security and adding more detection devices (ground sensors, thermal imaging, surveillance radars) are among the urgent correctives that are being applied.
The army killed 10 terrorists on Tuesday in an operation in Lachipora near LoC. But the multi-agency centre (MAC) — an umbrella body of intel units such as Intelligence Bureau, Research & Analysis Wing, Military Intelligence and the intel divisions of paramilitary forces — had warned that infiltration across LoC is reaching an all-time high.
MAC is headquartered in Delhi and responsible for collating and analysing information from all intelligence sources.
A surge in infiltration was among the issues discussed at a meeting between Home Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and senior defence ministry officials on Monday.
In a recent report, MAC had estimated that more than 80 infiltrators had crossed LoC in the April-August period. The army has said it had caught more than 30 infiltrators in the January-August period.
Senior officials in MAC, who spoke on the condition they not be identified, told ET that there's a significant problem for Indian security forces in terms of dealing with those who have already crossed the LoC.

The border security should be jointly carried out by the military (external affairs) and state defense forces (internal affairs).

I would abolish the BSF. It should be replaced with an 'militarized' border force under the command of the minister for external affairs, and state armed forces that are responsible for 'immigration/customs', 'internal policing' and 'rescue/coastguard'.

Indo-Pak border to be completely sealed by Dec 2018

ndia has decided to completely seal its winding border with Pakistan by December 2018, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday. The minister said the situation on the border would be continuously monitored. Rajnath Singh said a new concept, “Border Security Grid”, would be put in place after taking inputs from all border states. “Tension between India and Pakistan has increased, countrymen should trust security forces and stand by them,” said Singh.
