Amid inconsolable family members, bodies of the five NCC cadets who had drowned in a tragic incident, reached Indira Gandhi International (IGI)Airport on Thursday. The bodies were flown toDelhi from Kerala in an Indian Air Force helicopter and reached here around 1.30 pm.
The bodies were accompaniedby five NCC officials from the naval airport in Kochi. Along with the kin of the deceased, Defence Minister AK Antony, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy were present at the domestic terminal to pay floral tributes and express their grief on the unfortunate incident.

All the five deceased, hailing from Delhi, were part of the National Trekking Camp of theNational Cadets Corps at Malayatoor, about 52 kms from Kochi when the tragedy struck them on Wednesday.
While two boys first slipped into the Periyar River near Kochi as they were clicking photographs of the picturesque spot, the three others jumped to help them.
Airport sources said that earlier at Kochi, floral tributeswere paid to the departed on behalf of Defence Minister AK Antony, CM Oomen Chandy, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral Satish Soni and NCC Director GeneralLt Gen PS Bhalla.
About 700 odd NCC cadets from across the country havecongregated at Malayattoor for the eight-day national level trekking camp which began on December 23.
Antony on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the unfortunate incident and announced an ex-gratia compensation of `3.5 lakh each to the familes of the deceased.

I wonder what was the state of Periyar River at that point? Google images show mostly a very calm body of water. Does NCC teach swimming and life-saving?
