BJP to organize 'biggest rally in the history' of UP - The Times of India

LUCKNOW: BJP on Friday claimed that it would organize the "biggest rally in the history" of Uttar Pradesh here on March 2 which would break the myth of BSP of holding big rallies.

The party claimed that the rally, to be addressed by its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, will be attended by about 15 lakh people.

"The BJP has decided to organise Vijay Shanknaad rally of Narendra Modi at Ramabai Ambedkar maidan which would be the biggest rally in the history of UP and would also break the myth of BSP of holding big rallies," said Laxmikant Bajpai, state president of BJP.

The BJP leader said that 29 trains have been booked for bringing people, and 100 invitation cards would be distributed at each booth.

BJP eyes OBC votes in Uttar Pradesh - The Hindu

After its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rallies across Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party will now focus on wooing the OBC population in the State, even as the Rashtriya Swamyamsevak Sangh has stepped up efforts to mobilise support for the party in the general elections.

The RSS sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat, is on a five-day tour of the State, where he will meet pracharaks and office-bearers as part of the saffron outfit’s annual regional meetings. Mr. Bhagwat is expected to hold a brainstorming session in Varanasi on February 13 or 14, an event likely to be attended by BJP State president Laxmikant Bajpai and other party leaders.

The RSS-BJP leaders are expected to discuss probable candidates, joining of leaders, mergers and other organisational activities in view of the general elections. However, Mr. Bajpai said the RSS meetings were “routine” events, part of its annual programme. On his participation, Mr. Bajpai said: “I will go only as a sangh pracharak, not as State head of the BJP.”

Sources within the RSS also said the outfit was busy “educating” voters and “mobilising” support for the elections by holding door-to-door programmes urging Hindu voters, especially the youth, to ensure that they obtained their voter cards. The organisation is banking on the polarisation of votes on communal lines. To woo the OBC community, the party will hold a month-long social justice programme in all districts of the State beginning February 15. The programme will kick off in Saharanpur.

While the BJP is looking to popularise Mr. Modi’s humble background and OBC credentials to woo the community, it also hopes to polarise votes between Muslim and non-Muslim OBCs. “The backward classes will be made aware how they are losing out to the vote bank politics of minority appeasement. Muslims belonging to the OBC already get reservation, so what’s the need for reservation on the basis of religion as the Samajwadi Party wants? These attempts are merely to consolidate the vote bank and the OBC will be made aware of such wrongs,” said Vijay Bahadur Pathak, BJP chief spokesperson. The party is particularly aiming at polarising in its favour the non-Yadav OBC votes, and will project leaders from these communities along with other upper caste leaders.

For this purpose, the party, which has stressed that it would go solo in the State, is considering mergers with smaller caste-based parties. One of the speculations doing the rounds in U.P. is the possible alignment of the BJP with the Rashtriya Lok Dal, which is fighting to keep intact its Jat-Muslim vote combination after the Muzaffarnagar riots.

According to sources, the RLD is under pressure by the khaps to merge with the BJP. Incidentally, the BJP is wooing the khaps by providing them greater representation in its meetings.

The BJP is expected to launch the former Mumbai Police Commissioner, Satyapal Singh, who joined the party last week, against RLD chief Ajit Singh for the Baghpat seat.

"Clear cut Modi wave", BJP will win more than 300 seats: Venkaiah Naidu

Bangalore: Asserting that there was a "clear cut Modi wave", senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said the BJP will win more than 300 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls as it has gained the confidence of the minorities and oppressed castes.

"There is a clear-cut Narendra Modi wave across the country. BJP will win more than 300 Lok Sabha seats. There is a tacit change among voters. Dalits, SC/STs and minorities have voted for the party in the state assembly elections last year," he said addressing BJP workers here.

Citing an example, Naidu said out of the 34 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes in Rajasthan, BJP won 20-odd assembly seats, clearly showing Dalit swing towards the party.

"Congress gave ten tickets to Muslim candidates in Rajasthan, but none of them could win a single seat. Whereas, BJP fielded four Muslim candidates and two won. This also shows the minority voters have voted for BJP," he said.

This trend was also seen in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Delhi elections, Naidu added.

Speaking about the emergence of Third Front, Naidu said history showed the futility of such an alternative where there were far too many prime ministerial aspirants. "This is also seen even now. Deve Gowda, Nitish Kumar, Mamta Banerjee, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Jayalalitha, all want to be prime minister," he said.

Third Front is a non-existent alternative as some parties do not cherish proximity to other parties, Naidu said.

"RJD does not cherish proximity to JD(U); Trinamool Congress to Congress and Communists; SP to BSP; AIADMK to DMK, and hence where is the Third Front?" he questioned.

Naidu also ridiculed the Congress, and Third Front by saying their policies will push India backward and make its position awkward, respectively. "BJP means forward (progress), Congress means backward and Third Front awkward," he said.

BJP organises NaMo car rally in Delhi

New Delhi: The BJP Sunday organised a NaMo car rally here to reach out to the city's voters ahead of the General Elections.

Flagged off by Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Vijay Goel, the rally started at 9 am from National Victor School at Patparganj in east Delhi and ended at the same spot at 3 pm.

It covered parts of east, south and central Delhi including areas like Indraprastha Park, Ashram, India Gate, and Connaught Place.

According to the BJP, around 250 cars participated in the rally that was organised by the party's chartered accountants cell.

"There has been overwhelming support from all sections of society for (BJP's prime ministerial candidate) Narendra Modi as witnessed in this rally," Goel said.

The BJP has also been organising NaMo tea parties to increase Modi's popularity in the city and to cash in on the "tea vendor" jibe from the Congress.

The party has announced it would launch its "Chai pe Charcha" (discussion over cup of tea) campaign across the country in a bid to influence the undecided voters.

Kerala suffered on growth front: Modi - The Hindu

Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister and the prime ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Sunday, launched a scathing attack against the successive LDF and UDF governments for not addressing the development needs of the State over the years and for indulging in “shadow boxing.”

Launching the election campaign of the BJP in the State at the ‘Mahasammelan’ on the Shanghumughom beach here, Mr. Modi said Kerala had suffered on the development front and industrialisation despite its human resources and abundant natural resources, owing to the shadow-boxing behind the curtain by the fronts. “It is like a jugalbandi of five years and both blame each other when they come to power,” he said. Mr. Modi said the “adjustment” by the UDF and the LDF had forced the wife of the slain RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan to come to the streets seeking a CBI inquiry. The shadow boxing by the two fronts had also helped the accused in the K.T. Jayakrishnan murder case and in the violent incidents at Marad.

The CPI(M) did not believe in democracy and was interested in unrest to carry forward its agenda. Mr. Modi launched a frontal attack on the Communist Party of India [CPI(M)] for opposing “mechanisation that had left 50 per cent of the fertile land in the State uncultivable and farmers committing suicide, and computerisation… The time has come to wipe them out as in West Bengal”.

Mr. Modi said agriculture, manufacturing, and service sector should be given importance for the development of the State and the country. He cited the LNG terminal construction in Gujarat and Kerala that was taken up in 1998 and how the State missed it and had to spend Rs.4,500 crore compared to Gujarat’s Rs.2,000 crore.

Stating that terrorism was being politicised in the State, Mr. Modi also blamed the governments at the Centre and State for youth being misled and falling prey to anti-national activities. He also wanted the women in the State to come forward to prevent the youth from turning to drugs and alcohol.
    ‘Development path’

The people of the country had already decided that the BJP should come to power in the State and Kerala should support the party to make it their government. The prime ministerial candidate said he could do in five months what others could do in five years.

2014 polls: BJP MP Varun Gandhi kickstarts election campaign from Sultanpur

    Last Updated: Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 18:44

    1
    Zee Media Bureau

Sultanpur: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) General Secretary Varun Gandhi on Sunday kickstarted the election campaign for the upcoming General Elections from Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a public rally here today Varun Gandhi said, as quoted by a news channel, “I have come here not as a neta but a son. I have been sent here by God to fulfill my father's ambitions for you.”

The Pilibhit MP added, “The last time I was here, it was in my mother's lap. I have returned as a man. Let me shoulder your burden."

Though, BJP is yet to declare its list of candidates, Varun Gandhi is likely to contest from the Sultanpur parliamentary constituency. He is currently an MP from Pilibhit.

He won the last election from Pilibhit in the northern part of the state, which used to be represented by his mother, Maneka, who vacated it for him in 2009.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has "almost finalised" names of 30 candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The names, which have been cleared by the party's national parliamentary board after due deliberations with the state unit, are likely to be announced by the end of February.

The first list of candidates includes names of Varun Gandhi, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh (Etah), Ramakant Yadav (Azamgarh), Hukum Singh (Kairana), Sanjeev Baliyan (Muzaffarnagar), Dharmendra Kashyap (Aonla), Rajendra Agarwal (Meerut) and Ram Shankar Katheria from Agra, as per IANS.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is also closely monitoring the selection of candidates this time.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has called a meeting of all zonal in-charges of the RSS at Varanasi on February 15.

Son of Menaka and late Sanjay Gandhi, 33 years old Varun, first visited Bijuthua Hanuman Temple today before addressing an another rally at Kadipur Junior High School Ground.

After Varun's entry in Sultanpur, three persons from Nehru-Gandhi would be in the race of 2014 General Elections. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has been representing Amethi Lok Sabha constituency that falls in Sultanpur district while party President Sonia Gandhi is MP from neighbouring Rae Bareli.

Virtually launching the party's poll campaigning in east UP, Gandhi said, “The entire region has held tremendous emotional and symbolic importance not only for me but for my family for the last three generations. My grandmother, father and uncle started their political career from here. It is thus important for not only me but my family to pay obeisance to the region.”

An outspoken politician from the famed Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, Varun was jailed in 2009 for making a virulently anti-Mislim speech after he won the election from Pilibhit.

In 2009, Gandhi was caught on camera allegedly telling an election rally that his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party would "cut the heads of Muslims" and comparing a rival Muslim candidate to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

However, due to lack of evidence, a local court in UP cleared him off the charges.

The BJP has 10 MPs in the state in the outgoing Lok Sabha. The party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's close aide Amit Shah has been appointed the in-charge of the party affairs in the state with an aim to win as many seats as they can in Uttar Pradesh.

Bappi Lahiri to contest LS polls from Bengal - The Hindu

Noted music director Bappi Lahiri will contest the Lok Sabha election from West Bengal as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party’s State unit president Rahul Sinha said here on Thursday.

“Mr. Lahiri’s becoming a BJP candidate from here will definitely add to the party’s chances of achieving electoral success in West Bengal as he is one of the celebrated musicians of the State as well as of the country,” he added.

Mr. Lahiri was among those present at the rally in the city that the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had addressed on February 5.

Mr. Sinha said his party would launch its “one-note-one-vote” campaign that would start from February 20.
    Donation for party

In this campaign initiative, party workers would go door-to-door to collect donations for the party that can be paid only with a single currency note ranging from Re.1 to Rs.1,000.

Mr. Sinha said the names of the other BJP candidates in the State would be announced by February end or early March.

The party’s election strategy in West Bengal would be decided at a meeting of its office-bearers scheduled to be held on Friday.

RSS to play key role in BJP candidates selection in U.P. - The Hindu

Mohan Bhagwat will meet RSS and party functionaries at Varanasi this weekend

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh will play a pivotal role in the selection of BJP candidates in Uttar Pradesh for the general election.

RSS Sarsangchalak Mohan Bhagwat will hold a brainstorming session with the zonal and district heads of the organisation and the party’s campaign in-charge at Varanasi this weekend. Senior BJP leaders, including State president Laxmikant Bajpai, will attend the meetings.

Sources in the RSS, which is closely monitoring the selection process, said the “report cards” of the probable candidates and sitting MPs would be presented at the meetings.

A senior functionary said the meetings would discuss the role of the RSS in the process. “It is basically a ticket manthan session, to decide how much say each organisation will have in deciding the candidates.”

The BJP is said to have finalised candidates for 30 of the 80 seats. Some of the prominent names are Pilhibit MP Varun Gandhi, who will contest from Sultanpur, and Hukum Singh, who will seek election from Kairana in western Uttar Pradesh.

Now, the organisation will assess the credentials of the other candidates.

The BJP is also considering taking in smaller and regional parties.

    Caretakers

Amit Shah, BJP general secretary in charge of the State and close aide of prime ministerial candidate Narenda Modi, has relied upon RSS functionaries who serve as caretakers, or palak, of the constituencies. These palak will oversee campaigning and coordinate between the party and the RSS.

The RSS is mobilising support at the booth level, even as the BJP is popularising Mr. Modi’s OBC credentials and his background as a tea-vendor. To woo OBC voters, the BJP will stage a month-long social justice programme from Saturday.

BJP ties up with OBC leader Upendra Kushwaha in Bihar - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: BJP has reached an understanding with Kushwaha leader Upendra Kushwaha as part of its outreach to the OBCs.

Sources in the BJP said the party might leave three Lok Sabha seats for Kushwaha who gained prominence as a colleague of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar but soon decided to strike out on his own.

The tie-up is part of the effort to woo the non-Yadav, non-Kurmi sections of OBCs and MBCs in Bihar.

The saffron party, which has been subtly emphasizing Narendra Modi's credentials as the first OBC politician who has come within sniffing distance of being PM, has also decided to field non-upper castes in close to half the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar.

Opinion within BJP was split over tying up with Kushwaha, with a strong section in the party viewing him as an over-hyped maverick who has frequently shifted his loyalties. He was defeated in the last assembly elections despite contesting from a constituency with a sizeable Kushwaha concentration as well as the tailwind of goodwill for the Nitish-led NDA coalition.

Many in the BJP felt the party should give prominence to its own Kushwaha leaders instead of legitimizing Kushwaha's claim to be the tallest leader of the community.

In the end, however, the BJP decided for the tie-up calculating that it will help amplify the party's friendly intent towards OBCs.

The party leadership took the view that Kushwaha, while not the only leader of the horticulturist caste that accounts for about 4-5% of the population, is an important figure among the community, the reason why Congress was also keen on him.

What adds to his value is the fact that he is seen as a symbol of the Kushwaha community's angst against the domination of Kurmis.

Kushwahas occupy the same social rung as Kurmis, and are bigger in size. But it is the latter who have emerged as the more powerful factor -- something which has come out in starker relief in the wake of the pre-eminence of Nitish Kumar, a Kurmi.

The result is an interesting dynamic. The similarity of status and a common resentment of the domination of Yadavs tends to unite the two castes into a loose Luv-Kush alliance of twins. But the heartburn among the Kushwahas tears asunder the band of brothers named after the sons of Lord Ram and Sita.

Piyush Pandey, Prasoon Joshi and Sam Balsara to helm BJP’s Rs 400 crore poll drive - The Times of India

The Bharatiya Janata Party is lining up an A-team of advertising professionals to execute its election campaign. Sources close to the development told TOI that celebrated lyricist and adman Prasoon Joshi and media planning veteran Sam Balsara have been mandated to handle the Rs 400 crore election account of the principal opposition party.

The creative duties, which involve making television and prints ads, may be split between a few players including a little-known WPP agency, Soho Square. Joshi, who leads McCann Worldgroup here, may be involved with the campaign at an individual level as a lyricist, sources close to the matter said. The media-buying duties, which entail putting the communication across different media platforms like print, radio, TV and digital, have been given to Madison Media. Lodestar UM and WPP's Group M were also in contention for this coveted account.

Besides, Joshi and Balsara, the BJP has also managed to rope in Piyush Pandey, executive chairman and creative director (South Asia) at Ogilvy & Mather (O&M), albeit indirectly, to spruce up its advertising campaign. Pandey's O&M, also a part of Martin Sorrell's WPP group, is likely to oversee the work which will come out of Soho Square, industry sources said.

O&M could not take up the account as the agency on record due to a strict global guideline which does not allow group agencies to work on election campaigns. Pandey has been working with the Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government and sources said that on the chief minister's insistence the adman was brought on board. The hotly contested pitch for the BJP election account had several leading advertising and media agencies in the fray as reported earlier by this newspaper in its January 28 edition.

With its prime ministerial candidate Modi leading from the front, the BJP's communication will be digital-heavy, said sources.

The ruling Congress party had reportedly handed out its Rs 500-crore account to Japanese agency Dentsu and Taproot while its public relations is being handled by Genesis Burson-Marsteller. The Rs 500-crore advertising budget, however, was denied by Congress. The party officially started its mega campaign with Rahul Gandhi taking the centrestage last month in a controversial tagline, "main nahin, hum (not I, we)".

Joshi did not respond to text messages and calls from TOI, while O&M's Pandey said he had not been mandated by the BJP for the campaign. Madison's Balsara could not be reached for a comment.

Modi, who has been one of the first Indian politicians to take to social media platforms, boasts of over 3.4 million followers on micro-blogging site Twitter. "They are expected to use the digital media aggressively and innovatively," said a source in the bJP who did not want to be quoted as the party has not made an official announcement yet.

The BJP's communication around the elections has been picking pace online, although no agency has been formally appointed so far. The party put out full-page advertisements in leading dailies on January 25—National Voters day. The saffron party has been pushing the Modi brand through various social media channels. The party has also been promoting its 'Mission 272+' volunteer initiative online.

Besides the Rs 500-crore ad blitzkrieg which the Congress has planned, the ruling United Progressive Alliance is parallely running the 'Bharat Nirman' campaign. The Rs 100-crore campaign, being handled by ad agency Percept/H, is run from the budget of the information & broadcasting ministry headed by Manish Tiwari.
