Narendra Modi is reportedly keen to invite heads of state of various countries including SAARC nations for his oath-taking ceremony on Monday, May 26. This would include Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Mr Modi reportedly conveyed this to President Pranab Mukherjee when he met him yesterday. The Ministry of External Affairs has begun the process to invite the leaders, sources said. The invites are likely to go out by this evening, they added.

There is no recent precedent for inviting foreign heads of state when an Indian prime minister has been sworn in. SAARC nations include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan and the invitation would send out a strong signal of a neighbour-friendly new governmen.

The BJP has indicated that Mr Modi will work to a re-crafted foreign policy. He repeatedly tore into the Congress-led UPA government's foreign policy in his election speeches as"stagnated","weak"and"a mockery."
BJP chiefRajnath Singhsaid yesterday that about 3000 people would be invited for Mr Modi's oath-taking, which will be held in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace. Only two other prime ministers - Chandra Shekhar and Atal Bihari Vajpayee - have been sworn in in the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt.
Others have taken oath in the historic Durbar Hall of the palace, which can only accommodate 500 people. -

This is what I call unhealthy obsession with Pakistan. He invited premiers of all SAARC countries, and Pakistan being a member will get the invitation. Why NDTV has to twist it's headline as if the invitation was exclusive to Pakistan? Sensationalism anyone?

NS invited MMS for his swearing in ceremony and it would have sounded very bad if that wasn't reciprocated.

NS is unlikely to attend, as PM MMS hadn't and had set a precedent to follow. Also if he attends he will be severely criticized by mullah-military brigade.

It's generally not the protocol to invite other head of states for swearing in ceremony, unless otherwise both countries are fairly close to each other.

NS during his swearing in ceremony made a deviation by inviting PM MMS.

So, it would have been rude in the part of India to not invite PM NS to Modi's swearing in.

But, inviting NS alone wouldn't sound proper for diplomacy ( NS also had invited Karzai) so he invited all SAARC premiers.

I doubt if any one would attend personally as it's not the norm. Everyone will send representative.

If any one attends personally, be sure that country will host Modi for his first overseas tour.

no need for amaa these madrasi parties has lost their charm. as BJP has got full mandate of its own, there is no room for regional parites to blackmail.

so does not matter if didi or amaa come or not

i personally think it is a good move.

also india is the dominant force of the SAARC region. further nawaz needs to be offered the opportunity to show he is "in-charge".

This is good move bjp is being labeled as an aggressive nationalistic Hindu party.
This is a goodwill gesture. If this label is kept others will exploit it to arm pakistan
And push for a war.

It is important that Amma, Mamta and Biju does not come together against Modi but remains divided...

The invitation to the SAARC Nation Heads is a coup of sorts since it would indicate that Modi, despite the reputation that is bandied about him, is a team player and wants to contribute to the immediate neighbourhood and this was his indication of good intent.

It will also be an indication to the regional satraps within India that India's foreign policy initiatives will be despite them and that they should come on board and contribute positively to get the best out of India's foreign policy and of the Nations the regional satraps within India have against.

No, we need good relations with our neighbours for economic development which is the prime agenda for BJP..

Also the way, all our neighbours have developed an Anti-India feeling since past few years its quite necessary too !!

India cannot ignore its neighbors, India has to fix the issues in South Asia and establish good relations with its neighbors to grow its stature globally.

Can anything at all make Pak shed anti-India attitude? This can send out a signal that India is willing to overlook the issues like border problems, terrorism and reach out to Pak. If SAARC has to be invited, it has to include Pak. So it could have been avoided altogether. Besides, this isnt a normal practise.
