BJP takes lead in Karnataka district polls

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took early leads in polls to the Karnataka local governing councils.

Of the 30 zilla (district) panchayats, the BJP was leading in 14, the Congress in seven and the Janata Dal-Secular [JD(S)] in four - after two hours of counting that began at 171 centres across the state at 8am.

The winning of these polls is crucial for chief minister BS Yeddyurappa to stay in office.

Over 65% of the 21 million voters, nearly half of them women, cast their ballots in the elections to the 30 zilla and 176 taluka panchayats on December 26, 31 and January 1.

BJP strengthening in Karnataka is great news. If BSY manages to somehow win the next assembly polls and UPA fails to create Telangana, Congress will be thrown out of South India once and for all.

In the wake of series of scam and corruption charges that were laid at BJP's door step and the last years Congress-JDS combines failed to attempt topple the BJP govt, the Taluk-Panchayat elections were seen as veritable referendum on the BJP govt.Apparently one of the compromise agreed upon between BSY and BJP central leadership following the defection crisis last year, was the defer the question leadership was sought to deferred until the panchayat results were out.The results ,although not sweeping, will still give BSY much relief.Bellary brothers have worries in their home district,BJP hasn't done well there.

This is not a verdict on BSY leadership or whether the people have absolved of various corruption allegation, the result was a reflection on BJP's nurturing of party organization at grass root level, where candidates where chosen on the basis of their hardwork and merit.

Congress would probably have got more districts had t not been for its ill advised move to join forces with the discredited H.D Kumaraswamy led JDS,who resorted to crass political opportunism by engineering political defection to unseat the BJP govt.Janata Dal(secular)is becoming increasingly irrelevant in Karnataka politics.

It is indeed surprising that the Congress is declining in what was once their stronghold.

I hope some agency takes a poll as to why it the Congress losing its hold and why the BJP is ascending.

There are many who like BJP for its nationalist views but do not subscribe to the VHP, RSS line. And yet some are totally committed to the RSS and VHP line. What is the percentage?

What are the percentage that totally reject the communal angle? How many of the majority community are being pushed BJP's way because of insensitive comments by people like Digvijay Singh? Do people endorse the moral policing in places in Karnataka and appreciate such activities?

Is the Congress on the wane because of power being in a single family dynasty, or because of disgraceful sycophancy, or because the party has become synonymous to being scam ridden, or because the zeal to raise issue that agitate communal sensitivity of the majority community, or what?

Are the people fed up of this communal card conveniently raised by the BJP/ Congress/BSP/SP to suit their political agenda, when actuality they do nothing to uplift society and the downtrodden, be they from any community or religious groups, once their purpose is served?

You just enumerated all the factors perfectly. The questions are: can BJP accomplish being a truly nationalist party instead of just another shadow version of Congress? Can Congress revive by discarding the Gandhi family?

Congress in Karanataka is in tatters. JD = Deve Gowda = biggest crook. No one in his right mind would vote for him. BJP gets the vote by default. It happened in the last assembly elections too. Add to that the billions of illegal mining money that financed the election and bought of votes and you have the perfect election result.

    BJP won Karnataka by Default??

Time and again they win elections, and the reason behind it is-default? Do you know the support base which BJP has in towns and Villages of Karnataka? Their organizational culture and indeed their penetration?

I hardly know anyone in Delhi who voted for Congress....still it won Delhi elections......should I call that they won by Default?

There is no alternative in Karnataka. The alternative is worse than BJP. Sadly the BJP didnt prove itself to be the party with a difference, but its still better to have the BJP than have Gowda and his ilk. Congress is nowhere in the picture now.

"Alternative" is a word you can aptly use to convey your thoughts, the word "default" would imply that any tom-****-harry can win a state election, without having any support base!

When there is no alternative, you win by default. It is the case right now. No one can match the money and muscle power either of the BJP. The entire assembly election was bought out esp in the north where people were paid 500 for each vote. Reddys spent upward of 1000 cr in that elections. not that the others didnt try to do the same, but they just could not match the price. Congress best was 200, JD best was 300.

All this and again no one else being looked at favorably leads to BJP being in power for a very long time in Karanataka.
All could change now with the Reddys being implicated and Yeddi will not do much about it. Reddys might revolt again or may be not. It would go back on the central leadership to decide who is a better bet. Reddy with his money or Yeddi.

I said "alternative" is an apt word to express your thoughts, moreover, knowing the the ground reality people chose BJP over corrupt Gowdas and congress, BJP has a strong Lingayat base (BSY) which is unshakable, small towns follow BJP to the core, even coastal Karnataka now sings BJPs tune et al....No way BJP won Karnataka polls (twice), and other by-polls, Panchayat polls by default!!

No doubt money plays an important role in elections, however, it seems like you are suggesting BJP is rich and Congress poor, hence BJP won! :)

Combination of factors is doing the work for BJP. Congress is weak at the grassroots level now. And its shown in the panchayat polls. BJP is going to dominate for a considerable period of time now.
