NEW DELHI: Opposition BJP may have voted against Pranab Mukherjee and supported P A Sangma for the Presidential office, but since Mukherjee won the elections and was elected as the President, the party has decided to welcome him as the first citizen.

Having dismantled its campaign machinery for Sangma, BJP has decided to dissociate itself from the move to challenge Mukherjee's candidature in court. On Wednesday, BJP made it clear that any move by Sangma to challenge Mukherjee's election as the President in the Supreme Court, will be done in his personal capacity and not by the party. The party said it has already welcomed Mukherjee as the 13th President of the country, and if Sangma plans to file a petition against his election, it would be in his individual capacity.

"We would like to make it clear if Sangma takes such a step, then it will be his personal choice. As far as BJP and NDA is concerned, post-election, we have welcomed the election of the President of India and we would not like to link this to the party or to the NDA," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said here on Wednesday.

Sangma is being a sore looser.

    Be a man.

@leftcentreright : Ha ha to you. The law says no party will file. Only candidate can. Hence the BJP statement. Keeping Buddhu's company?

Mighty stupid decision in the first place to back Sangma, who was not even supported by his own party.

The decision, if I heard the spokesman correctly, is that now that the election is over, there is no requirement to contest that.

Pranab is highly respected by BJP heavyweights. And they also have healthy relation with him. It was a bad decision to support Sangama in the first place.

Sangama's personal ambitions could have been well handled by NCP. Now he is going nowhere.
