Bangalore: The Congress dealt a massive blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka urban local body elections by winning four major city corporations. The Congress not only made huge gains by winning the highest number of wards across the state, but the party also routed BS Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) and ended the rule of Reddy brothers in Bellary by decimating their BSR Congress across central Karnataka.

Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's KJP failed to make a big splash while the ruling BJP could only secure third place by winning just 876 wards while the Congress was way ahead with 1881 seats. The Janata Dal Secular (JDS) managed to hold on to its strength in the Old Mysore region and managed to win 890 wards to take the second place in the state.

The Karnataka local polls, which have been billed as semi-finals before the state elects a new Assembly in a couple of months, show that the BJP is finding the going tough and has not been fully able to counter the Yeddyurappa effect.

There are a total number of 4976 seats for which counting took place. The Congress won Bellary, Mangalore and Davanagere city corporations. The party is leading in four out of seven city corporations and is also doing very well in Dakshin Kannada.

The BJP is ahead in Hubli-Dharwad while there is close fight between Congress and JDS in Mysore. Yeddyurappa's party has put up a dismal performance in Shimoga while the BJP has suffered a huge defeat in its stronghold of coastal Karnataka where the Independents have come third. The trends and results show that urban voters have rejected BJP and its offshoots KJP and BSR Congress.

The Bellary brothers, who had launched the BSR Congress, have been routed in their stronghold. The Congress is also leading in areas dominated by the JDS.

The results are crucial since they could be an indicator of what will happen in the state elections coming up in two months. Over 200 municipalities including seven city corporations went to the polls on March 7.

In the last urban local bodies polls in 2007, of the total 5007 wards, the Congress had come first winning 1606, followed by JDS 1502 and BJP 1180.

It was expected given the dismal performance of BJP and infighting. Congress may yet come to power with help from JD-S.

I am surprised at Cong doing well when the general feeling is that the grassroots have all collapsed.

BTW, I have to inform you that day before, my employee didn't turn up for work. When I asked another where he has gone, he said he has gone to his town to vote as he is getting 1000 rupees to vote for JD along with a biryani.

@Daredevil: Congress was expected to do good. Actually JD(s) was surging ahead even in central areas and some places in north karnataka around decemeber. Somehow they have lost some steam. To be frank, bjp getting so many seats/wards itself is surprising. WRT Yedyurappa, he is facing genuine problems of setting up a new party from scratch. It is not a referendum of his popularity. If he can put a decent enough organisation on ground, he may very well achieve his goal of getting 20-30 seats in assembly elections.

Once elections are announced, lot of re-alignment will happen. Only then a much clearer picture will arrive. Untill then it's advantage congress (which is also reflected in the local bodies poll). If congress does not tighten things and ensure all factions unite, it will be tough for them.

This once again shows that its a loose-loose situation for both bjp and yeddyurappa.

This was expected , thanks to BSY & Reddy brothers they just make mockery out of Karnataka politics I wonder how they survived 5 years

Funny part is BSY demanded Nobel Prize for stopping Minning Mafia

Looks like JD(S) also lost a lot of seats. May be independent caused a real blow to BJP.Btw, I was expecting that BJP would be wiped out and it's surprising BJP has good seats.

This is indeed a huge blow to BJP in Karnataka but they did put up a huge effort in ensuring that they got this result!

Yedurappa is a power to be reckoned with in Karnataka.

BJP naturally will have to eat humble pie now and in the future, or so it appears.

Congress will do well since SM Krishna has been sent back to Karnataka to organise things.

Apart from holding Khar's hand tight, as if for dear life, he is an excellent political organiser.

He may return to the job he knows best - Chief Ministership!

You win some, you lose some. But then elections really do not reflect Lok Sabha choices.

Even the BJP top brass, I believe, has conceded that the sun has set in Karnataka.

That is also the view of many from Karnataka.

The murky happenings has not given any reason for many in Karnataka to believe that BJP is a political party which is a whiff of fresh air!

This may be good for BJP.

Yeddy can see he cant win and he will be wiped out from Karnataka just like keshubhai from gujarat.

@Tolaha: am not sure that bjp put any serious efforts. A party ruling the state should not find itself in 3rd position if it has put serious efforts.
    ------------------------------------
It's advantage congress, but no cakewalk for it in assembly elections. But i feel every party has lost steam. Once assembly elections are announced, lot of political migrations will happen. Then one can see how strong bjp is??

BJP has squandered its chances of establishing a foothold in the South.

Anyone who preaches hatred against Indians, leave aside the community, should be hanged.

I'm sure than there will be no single leader left in BJP, if this thing ever happens.

In Karnataka BJP has done too much " natak" ie drama in the last few years

People voted for them as they were tired of the antics of Kumaraswamy and Deve gowda

Let them ie BJP go to Hell
