Bhuvan, (Sanskrit: भुवन, lit: Earth), is a satellite mapping tool similar to Google Earth and Wikimapia. It was developed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It offers resolution up to 5 metres and is considered as a rival to Google Earth and Wikimapia.[1]

A prototype of this application is expected to be ready by November 2008 and the official launch will be in 13th August 2009. The Tata Consultancies has also appointed a 3 crore deal with ISRO to make advanced moon map which is taken by Chandrayaan. One of the official said this software will be a freeware and it needs a license for the usage whether to check they are Indian or not. This will provide the maximum resolution that any map cant make it with. ISRO has also decided to make a tracking and mapping antenna(30x15)m the largest in India in Chennai for advanced 3D mapping and resources.[2]

Bhuvan will be able to take more closer pictures of the Indian Subcontinent as compared to the Google Earth. Bhuvan will feature a zoom level of upto 10 meters while the Google Earth features a zoom level of up to 200 meters. The new ISRO Bhuvan will also feature a multi layer information mapping while the present Google Earth features a single layer information mapping system. Apart from that, Bhuvan will also update map information every year contrary to the Google Earth which updates its map information every 4 years. [3]

“With Bhuvan we will be able to produce very local information which will be specific to only to our own country. This information available from this mapping system will be useful in addressing very local problems like floods, famines, infrastructure development, education and much more,” said ISRO chairman Dr G Madhavan Nair.

Unlike Google Earth, however the Bhuvan application will not be downloadable and will not allow users to host content in the near future. “We are not competing with Google,” said Jayaraman. A Google spokesperson declined to comment. According to P. Nag, director of the National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation, a Kolkata-based mapping agency that uses remote-sensing data to build India’s atlas, the Bhuvan project demonstrates the country’s expertise in both information and space technology. Isro launches desi version of Google Earth - India - NEWS - The Times of India

MUMBAI: Isro took a leap into satellite imagery of geographical regions with the launch of ‘Bhuvan’, a mapping application website like Google
Earth, on Wednesday. The day marks the 90th birth anniversary of the father of Indian space programme Vikram Sarabhai.

Top space scientists were present at the launch ceremony at a workshop organised by Astronautical Society of India in New Delhi. Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), a part of Isro, had a lead role in designing and developing ‘Bhuvan’.

NRSA director V Jayaraman told TOI that in November 2008 he picked up young scientists from Isro to work on the project. ‘‘They were extremely enthusiastic and right from the word go our focus was that it should be useful to users in India,’’ he said.

NRSA scientists developed the content using data provided by Indian satellites like Resourcesat-1. ‘Bhuvan’, which in Sanskrit means the earth, also focus on rural and thematic applications like wasteland mapping and terrain profile. It contains weather details like humidity levels. The new portal shows data which has been approved by the government of India. ‘‘Sensitive information has been kept out of the public domain,’’ said Jayaraman.

Isro chief spokesperson S Satish said compared to Google Earth, ‘Bhuvan’ is more ‘‘versatile’’ and provides data about different Indian cities. ‘‘It’s more viewer-friendly,’’ said Satish.

Space officials requesting anonymity said viewers can zoom into ‘Bhuvan’ maps up to 10 metres compared to Google Earth’s 200 metres and Wikemapia’s 50 metres. The website can be accessed on

At last our very own Earth stimulation with satellite feedback and imaging better than Google Earth by our very own ISRO , congrats to ISRO scientists. However , the site is running through heavy congestion, can any body please suggest how much memory it would take ?

    Regards

ISROBhuvan Needs Major Improvements Site Tests Revealed | Ub News

Bhuvan (meaning earth in Sanskrit) a web tool just like Goggle Earth was launched by Indian Space Research Organization last week. It Promises to give a gateway to explore and discover virtual earth in 3D space with specific emphasis on Indian region. Many people has given her a nick name as ‘Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Earth killer” people has commented that Bhuvan promises to show better 3-D satellite imagery of India in comparison to the US-based software giant plus a host of India-specific features like weather information and even administrative boundaries of all states and districts.

Bhuvan also provides tools for measuring, drawing, saving, printing and visualizing thematic information. The resolutions currently on offer are good enough to view a vehicle moving on a road quite clearly. The ISRO has revealed that the beta version is under testing on the site since yesterday and the fact revealed that it won’t pose a challenge to Google’s popular service anytime soon.
In comparison to Google earth there are number of differences between both of them like
Google Earth works on a downloadable client where as Bhuvan works within the browser (only supports Windows and IE 6 and above).

The site was unreachable for the better part of the weekend and even now, it gives up or hangs the browser every once in a while. When a layer (state, district etc.) is turned on, it delivers unevenly and sometimes fails to deliver the information at all.

The navigation panel failed to load routinely and it felt like a rare sighting when we could actually use the panel.

You will be surprised to know that above quibbles are minor in comparison to the major disappointment which is that the promise of high resolution pictures/images is not kept.
The Bhuvan was supposed to offer zoom upto 10 metres from the ground level (this is contrasted with apparently 200 metres for Google Earth),but not even a single image
is there with promised detailing. The navigation tools are quite similar to Google Earth (GE). The search doesn’t work if a query returns multiple results.

A pop up window is made-up to give the multiple results from which the user is supposed to be able to choose. People who have started testing the beta version onto their pc are claming that in two days search they found result only once. The rest of the time the window would pop up with no results or display at all but when the search is accurate, the software flies to the exact location, the same way as Google Earth.

For using Bhuvan users has to follow three simple steps .The basic version of Bhuvan is absolutely free on net, Once you register and you login, you will be asked to download the Bhuvan plug-in. ,Accept the installation of the plug-in and you are ready to use the full features of Bhuvan.

The Bhuvan offers a lot of information on weather, population details of various administrative units and on water bodies too. The beta version of Bhuvan is not able to show weather data as promised. The a administrative units offers only basic details like population

The special features which must be mention are drought map, flood map and with ISRO backing Bhuvan will be able to provide this sort of data from time to time to enable the specialist users to compare the drought and flood situations across the year. In Gist, The application needs major improvements before offering to a common man to use this feature.
