This issue is a real tricky one.

While one would like to give it in the rarest of rare cases, yet what should it be for those who excel in personal landmarks that, in a way, contributes to India's prestige.

As it is, it has been devalued.

Indeed, should those who have not contributed to the Nation intrinsically and instead have made personal landmarks be awarded the Bharat Ratna?

The contribution of sportspersons and film stars socially is zero. I thing govt. made this amendment so that Tendulakar can be awarded Bharat Ratna. I think that will be unfair for the award and what it stands for.

Viswanathan Anand and Sachin Tendulkar deserve the Bharat Ratna. They have done the country proud. Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honor in the country. Why would anyone be excluded from receiving it?

And what stops FMs Manekshaw, Cariappa, Gen JN Chaudhuri, Lt Gen Arora etc from getting Bharat Ratna, even though they were military officers?

Or give it to Subash Chandra Bose? Or Homi Bhabha?

Maybe someone would like Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor too receive the same!

One wonders what should be the criterion to make it indeed worth the honour.

In fact, the Press Council chief Justice Markandey Katju on Saturday suggested Bharat Ratna for noted Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib, saying there is no "fitter" person than him to whom the award can be bestowed.

"I had made this appeal in the Mushaira organised by Jashn-Bahaar, and my appeal had been endorsed by prominent persons in the audience like Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Law Minister Salman Khurshid, Chief Election Officer S Y Quraishi and others," he said.

By awarding it to Rajiv Gandhi we've set the bar pretty low anyway, so yes most names you quote deserve it. Certainly the military men.

Huh another issue with awarding highest civilian award to people who excell in their field.

Nobody cried when it was given to Satyajith Ray, Lata Mangeshkar, Amartya Sen, MS Subbalakshmi, Bismillah khan, Bhimsen Joshi etc?

If there is no social relevance, they wont be a celebrity either.

IMO who ever excels in their respective field for a long time should be given Bharat Ratna.

Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan also deserves it!

After all, it has already been diluted from its high morality that was the aim when it was instituted as an award.

If sports is the criterion then Major Dhyanchand should be given the award immediately. His contribution to our National Sport and the heights which he took the country are surely uncompareable.

The list will be real long given everyone's preference.

Imagine a crook like Chhatwal got a civilian award because he hosted various politicians when in the US and was a chum of MMS.

Sportstars & Filmstars are not Indian citizens? BharatRatna is highest civilian honor for any India. It was discrimination if these fields were not included before.

Having said that, it is very very tricky to measure someone's performance on unspecified scale (?) before considering them for BharatRatna.

bharat ratna is given to those who bring new energy and give new direction to a field in India and has a legacy to inspire the coming generation.
one who is deeply linked to the culture of India.
filmstar of bollywood are not inspiration for anyone. the films they make are completely irrelevant from the present day scenario and most of them have no meaning baring some good movies which finds no distributor or audience.

neither sportsperson nor actor/actress are doing anything to make become a proud role model.

Are authors, economists etc ok to be conferred this title but those in the sporting field who have brought acclaim to the country not good enough? Well cannot expect better from certain sections of the society that is used to live under prejudices, discrimination and reservations

    BS.

Vishy Anand and Sachin have inspired me a million times more than Lata Mangeshkar and a and order of magnitude unimaginablly more than Rajiv Gandhi. Who are you to judge whether a sportsperson inspires others or not. They may not inspire you, but surely you cannot generalize.

bharat ratna should be given to people who do things that matter to our nation...sports,entertainment industry do not count in...give it to some who has helped people to come out of poverty.

Swami Agnivesh should also be given the award along with Varavara Rao some may opine. There justification being that they stand up for what they perceive as the deprived and down trodden and who are forced to pick up the gun!

And why forget Arundhuti Roy, the one book wonder and now an activist (to keep in the limelight).

I am sure Geelani and friends who strong support the case for all three!

And then there is good old Phizo, the original insurgent, who was the toast of the West!

In short, I would like to say that this award should not be given out based on the political flavour of the month. It should enshrine the grace and gravity that such an award commands.

Ideally, the selection should be beyond politicians and their shenanigans and whims!

By your rationale, how does art qualify?
