Bhakra Dam on Pak terrorists' radar, says IB - Hindustan Times

India's biggest hydroelectric project Bhakra Dam, located on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, is on the hit-list of Pakistan-based militant outfits such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report has said. The IB alert was sent three months ago to various security agencies and the Himachal Pradesh and Punjab police.

The two states were asked to strengthen security at the dam and its surrounding areas to prevent any possible sabotage.

The Union home ministry has also called a meeting of senior officials from both states and Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Tuesday.

BBMB director GS Wassan told HT: "The IB had prepared a report of the threat perception from terrorist groups to the various hydel dams located in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir."

The attack can come from both over and under the water, the report had warned.

"The LeT has also been training its cadres for cliff-climbing, swimming across water channels and handling of explosives with the intention to target major dams in India particularly those located in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh," the IB report said.

The IB expressed concern over the "grossly inadequate" security measures and equipment at the dam. The dam's security was being handled by multiple agencies leading to confusion and dilution of responsibility. There should be a single agency responsible for security of the entire project, the report suggested.

BBMB authorities have stepped up vigil at the dam and also sought modern equipment from the Centre to detect any possible sabotage. "Considering the 90-km radius of the water reservoir it would be difficult for anyone to pose any serious danger to the dam," Wassan said.

The non state actors from Pakistan who are not trained by the ISI somehow seem to always plan attacks that are of Pak strategic interests, what a coincidence.

Dinku is right.

Dam burst will cause surge flooding.

It can be devastating.

Depending on the volume of water and the height, the impact will be determined.

Bhakra Dam breaking will have serious effects on Pakistan also.

Nut jobs in Pindi are not that crazy I think. They can forget getting a single drop from the Indus if they let their men do anything like that.

a much smaller section of India will be flooded compared to Pakistan. Causalities will be in thousands, making it the biggest terrorist threat ever. A credible proof of such planning warrants for immediate attack on such outfits.

To attack the Bhakra Sam would require sophistication that will dwarf even 9/11. If the intended purpose of the attack is to being it down, it's going to take a humongous effort. I wonder if even flying a jumbo into it will bring it down, that is if it gets through ADS.

An attack which does not bring down the dam and causes only superficial damage with the terrorist intention being to show their reach and fear mongering, is going to backfire sabot will surely mean India will be having an open license to attack infrastructure in Pak.

The only thing that can bring down Bhakra dam is a nuke. And if that happens then what happens next is beyond wildest estimations.

Destroying illegal Indian dams is not a big problem: Syed Salahuddin

Destroying illegal Indian dams is not a big problem: Syed Salahuddin

Supreme Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Syed Salahuddin has said that it is not a big problem for Mujahideen to destroy illegal Indian dames in Kashmir that are made to stop Water of Rivers that goes to Pakistan. He said that If Mujahideen can cause loss of 2 Billion to India by destroying Woler Berag then destroying new dams is even more easy. He also said that India is trying to destroy Pakistani fields by stopping its water and making many new dams of water of Pakistan.

While talking about dialogues between India and Pakistan he said that there will be no benefit of dialogues with India because India is not serious about solving issues with Pakistan and till now 135 times dialogues took place between both countries but there was no benefit.

Pakistanis have this in mind for a while now
