Islamabad: A Pakistani institute that works for promotion of peace with India has welcomed the decision to rename a city centre in Lahore after Bhagat Singh, and said it plans to install a statue of the martyr there.

"This is a victory for people of all religions, and activists who had been rallying for this cause since long," the Institute for Peace and Secular Studies (IPSS) was quoted as saying by the Daily Times.

The IPSS plans to place a statue of Bhagat Singh with a plaque displaying his poetry and biography at the newly named Bhagat Singh Chowk, it said.

Noorul Amin Mengal, district coordination officer of Lahore, recently took a decision to rename the Shadman Chowk as Bhagat Singh Chowk.

The IPSS said it wrote a letter to the Punjab government in 2001, suggesting that Bhagat Singh should be honoured and the place where he was hanged - Shadman Chowk - should be named after him.

"Subsequently, this request was taken up with Punjab legislators who tabled it in the Punjab assembly once and then again on April 13, 2012," the IPSS said.

"We congratulate all those whose tireless efforts made this victory possible. This decision will help establish that Pakistan belongs not only to Muslims but equally to its Sikh, Hindu, Christian and other citizens."

"Our heroes crossed religious and sectarian boundaries to fight the forces of oppression and to gain independence from colonialism," the institute said.

The IPSS, however, lamented that on the occasion of Bhagat Singh's 105th birth anniversary last week, his family members and scholars from India were invited but were unfortunately denied visas.

The institute requested the authorities that the Bradley Hall School that Bhagat Singh attended as a student should be converted into a museum, and also named after him.

Ahh... hopefully not, but as far as I can see, the statue is just going to be one juicy target to the nutcases!

Indians who wanted to be present for the ceremony were refused visas. This is just a gimmick to please a small subset, mindsets aren't changing.

And in Kolkata - a Mamata Bannerjee initiative!

As also naming a main road!

A nice populist move.

Bhagat Singh converted to Islam just before his death, he was a clever chap. This way he also enjoyed 72 virgins in heaven

I wonder if that is true.

When you are hanged, you die by jhatka and not halal!

That would be blasphemous and so no 72 virgins will be awaiting you!

Just an academic point.

On a serious note the main issue here is Pakistan is trying to beef up its covered support against Khalistani terrorists. They believe this is how they can come close to Sikhs in India.Things are not as simple as it appears right now. They are preaching Indians all over the facebook about the great sacrifices made by Sikhs in Indian freedom struggle. As if Sikhs are not Indian and it was their greatness that they helped us gaining independence but India being a perpetual Devil denying the same to the Sikhs. Now we have to learn about Bhagat singh from Pakistanis. This is what you get when you try to be friendly with Lucifer but our Gov is relentlessly peaceful aint they?

Renaming of chowk after Bhagat Singh put on hold

 Some things never change
--

The city government's plan to rename Fawara Chowk in Shadman after Bhagat Singh, the pre-Independence Indian freedom fighter, has been put on hold after it drew objections from "certain sections of society", The Express Tribune has learnt.

Officials in the city government said that at a hearing to elicit public opinion on the subject, 13 people had voiced disapproval of the name change while only six had supported it. They said that the arguments against renaming were that Pakistan was a Muslim country hence its major roads and squares should be named after Muslims, not Hindus or Sikhs. They had also threatened to protest against the decision.
