    Bengal Governor Narayanan resigns

New Delhi, June 30 (PTI): West Bengal Governor M. K. Narayanan resigned on Monday, becoming the fourth person occupying the gubernatorial post to put in his papers since the National Democratic Alliance government prodded some of the Governors appointed during United Progressive Alliance rule to quit.

Home Ministry sources said the Governor has tendered his resignation.

The resignation came weeks after Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami had telephoned some of the Governors, appointed by the previous UPA regime, to step down after the Narendra Modi government assumed charge.

Nagaland Governor Ashwani Kumar, Uttar Pradesh Governor B. L. Joshi and Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt have put in their papers in the last few days.

Narayanan, a former IPS officer who had served as Director of the Intelligence Bureau and was also the National Security Advisor, was appointed as the Governor of the state in January 2010.

All the four Governors who have resigned so far are either former IPS or IAS officers. Joshi and Kumar are former IPS officers while Dutt is a former IAS officer.

Narayanan,80, was recently questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation as a “witness” in the AgustaWestland VVIP helicopter deal probe.

Sources said the government was considering appointing some Bharatiya Janata Party veterans as Governors in around ten states.

Narayan probably had no role in the chopper controversy. This is another of the political games being played out. I hope a suitable governor replaces him.

Governors who are thought to be close to Congress are being removed. UPA did the same thing in 2004.

The UPA chucked out the BJP Governors.

Here at least they were nudged to volunteer quitting the office and their power, privileges and sometimes, pelf.

    Another bogus whimpering.

    Good he is going.

That Dixit woman will now be shoved into a militancy prone area where she will not be able to enjoy practising her chewy 'upper class' cockeyed style of Hindi or having 30 air conditioners since the ACs cannot be beat the Nagaland humidity.

And when the cases against he misdoings start, that will be when the fun begins.

It is time these handmaidens who served their Party President and her family hand and foot, realise that the truth catches up soon.

From Narendra Modi's personal experience, Governors are not mere stamp as many would think of them. They can play crucial role in the success of the state government. If the governor support the opposition party in the state it can tilt the balance in many crucial decisions. In Gujarat, it was the appointment of the Lokayukta where the leader of the opposition and the Governor themselves decided who the Lokayukta should be. So having BJP supporting governors is politically significant.
