In fact the most valuable part of the HSR is not travel from BeiJing to GuangZhou, because it is still need more time than plane, but the travel within 1200 kilometers. like from HangZhou to Shanghai, Nangjing to Shanghai, Beijing to Shanghai, BeiJing to Tianjin etc. Which is even faster than the plane, because when you take plane you will need to go to the airport which is often far from the city center. It make the travel original a whole day to 2-3 hours.
