Be cautious, exercise restraint': China tells India on Bhupen Hazarika bridge

BEIJING: China on Monday asked India to be "cautious" and exercise "restraint" over building infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh, days after Prime Narendra Modi launched the country's longest bridge linking Assam with the state claimed by Beijing.

"We hope India adopts a cautious and restrained attitude on the issue before the final settlement of the border issue with China to jointly control disputes, safeguard peace and tranquility in the border areas," the Chinese Foreign Ministry told IANS.

China's position on the eastern section of the Sino-Indian border areas is consistent and clear," a statement in Chinese said.

"China and India should resolve territorial disputes through negotiations and consultations between the two countries," the foreign ministry said.

PM Modi last week opened theBhupen Hazarika who hailed from Sadiya, the PM said it will serve as the foundation for a new economic revolution and help India in its efforts to become a superpower.

Speaking on the Act East Policy, the Prime Minister said he wanted the northeast region to become a trade hub for southeast Asia by connecting the area for economic activity.

"For this, we are laying stress on development of infrastructure and making the northeast a tourism centre. Lakhs of tourists would also come to Kamakhya temple and improve the economy," he said.

"Stress in now being laid on what was never done earlier... Electricity, roads, rail infrastructure and optical fibre network in the northeast will connect every corner of the region with the country," Modi said.

"The bridge will not only save money, reduce travel time but comes as a foundation for the beginning of a new economic revolution. That is why the whole nation has its eyes on this bridge," he said.

"The reduction of distance by 165 km and cutting travel time by seven to eight hours will open new doors for economic development... The bridge will bring development to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

"For fulfilling India's dream of becoming a top economically developed nation, a superpower, the northeast region is the place to begin with," Modi said.

The 9.15 km-long Bhupen Hazarika bridge will cut the distance and travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by 165km and five hours.

Analysts say the bridge will ensure swift movement of Indian troops in Arunachal Pradesh, which, therefore, will bolster India's defence along the China border.

They are just pissed and embarrassed because the NDA doesn't obey their wishes like UPA.

On the other hand, yesterday India denied Australia to join Naval exercises in Bay of Bengal which includes USA & Japan. Now China is "welcoming" the move portraying as if the Indians bowed to their pressure.

The chinki are in a way similar to pakis. They want authoritarian respect from their neighbours. North ke neighbour ke sath toh daal galne wali nai hai.. west me USA baitha hai.. (south korea), hence they look to the south to show how "superior" they are.

One should "exercise restraint" over vital infrastructural projects connecting rural areas? What were the Chinese thinking?

The construction of this bridge started in 2011 completed in 2017. Can't say if such important projects take this much time all over the world.

Anyways we need much more projects @ border areas. Too much pressure on a single project is not good since such strategic roads and Bridges can be Targeted by PLA with their long Range Artillery and stand off weapons.

The project was sanctioned by vajpayee, delayed by UPA, as latter still believed in Scorched Earth defence policy wrt China and giving CBM's

Actually there is a school of thought in the Army which advocate not to develop border areas with China as it thinks that PLA will benefitted from it once it overwhelm Indian positions and force it to retreat.

In 1962 combat engineers BEG (My Tauji's unit) were sent to destroy our stores, fuel depots and communication etc since all the infantry and other troops were ordered to retreat leaving all their ration and heavy equipments behind.

IN 1962 , one of my relative after retiring from brit indian army, took up job of were supplying rations to fighting units in border areas of Himachal/China and beyond via Jeep.

Scorched earth policy is the name of that school of thought, was relevant when Indian economy was not upto the snuff. Indian Army and India as a whole had developed fear psychosis for China after 62 and China going nuclear.

After 1998 and subsequent economic boom , there has been another school of thought that instead of defensive posture wrt China, India needs offensive capability against China, hence push for infrastructure and raising of three mountain strike corps. Good that finally India is trying to grow balls
