Rezwan Ferdaus held over Pentagon and Capitol bomb plot

A 26-year-old US citizen of Pakistani origin has been arrested for allegedly plotting to fly explosive-packed, remote controlled planes into the Pentagon and the US Capitol in Washington DC.

Rezwan Ferdaus was also charged with attempting to supply materials to al-Qaeda and aid attacks on US soldiers.

The Northeastern University physics graduate is accused of planning to commit "jihad" since early 2010.

Mr Ferdaus was arrested in Boston after an undercover investigation by the FBI.

Attack supplies

Announcing his arrest, the US Department of Justice described an elaborate operation over a period of months leading up to the arrest of Mr Ferdaus.

Authorities said he designed and supplied undercover operatives with a total of eight mobile phone detonators intended to be used by al-Qaeda operatives to set off bombs in the Middle East.

US attorney

During a June 2011 meeting, Mr Ferdaus was told that his first phone detonation device had killed three US soldiers and injured four or five others in Iraq. "That was exactly what I wanted," he reportedly told the undercover agents.

Also during 2011, Mr Ferdaus began speaking to the agents about his desire to organise an attack on the Pentagon, home of the US military, and the Capitol building in Washington DC, seat of the US Congress.

Posing as accomplices, they then supplied him with C-4 explosives, a remote-controlled plane and arms.

Mr Ferdaus was arrested on Wednesday immediately after putting the newly delivered weapons in a storage container, the FBI said.

The Pentagon was previously attacked in 2001 when the 9/11 hijackers flew a plane into the building
"The conduct alleged today shows that Mr Ferdaus had long planned to commit violent acts against our country, including attacks on the Pentagon and our nation's Capitol," US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said.

However, Ms Ortiz, US Attorney for Massachusetts, added: "The public was never in danger from the explosives," which were controlled by undercover FBI employees.

If convicted, Mr Ferdaus could face up to 15 years in jail for providing support and resources to a foreign terrorist organisation and up to 20 years in prison for attempting to destroy national defence premises.

Richard DesLauriers, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Boston Division, said law enforcement agencies in the area had worked together to "detect, deter, and prevent terrorism".

"We have an obligation to take action to protect the public whenever an individual expresses a desire to commit violence," he said.

Pakistan has created this chimera by feeding it's youngsters hate propaganda in the guise of history in it's school syllabi, the very skewed history taught to pakistani youngsters provides jehadi groups with a crop of pretty intelligent people who are already half brainwashed into believing that they live in a "dar ulaman" while the world beyond is a "dar ul harb" filled with kaffirs who only wish to harm Islam. As long as these base conditions remain the same cases like that of Rezwan Ferdaus shall continue to crop up.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/story/2011-09-28/DC-terrorist-plot-drone/50593792/1

Federal prosecutors allege in court documents that Rezwan Ferdaus outlined an elaborate plan to undercover FBI agents posing as al-Qaeda operatives that involved the use of three drone aircraft carrying deadly payloads to attack and destroy the iconic federal government landmarks.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said all of the weaponry was in the control of undercover agents who were closely monitoring the plot's developments. She said the public was never in danger.
His lawyer should argue that US agents entrapped his client. Where would the suspect get C4 other than from the government? As I mentioned elsewhere, if you fly a kite at East Potomac Park, the Park Service will stop you because it is near the airport. Anybody showing up with a 2 M long Saberjet model will be quickly thwarted,

If US government can't do better than entrapping lone lunatics, we are in trouble.

His intentions were clear that he meant to do harm. Under Patriot act he will be prosecuted.

FBI affidavit on Rezwan Ferdaus

Rezwan Ferdaus, a U.S.-born citizen of Bangladeshi background, was arrested Wednesday in an FBI undercover operation and accused of planning to build small explosive-laden drones to attack the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol, according to law enforcement officials.

Good question, since his targets were buildings and bridges. How many 1/4 lb blocks of C4 could his model airplane (and a beautiful model it is) carry anyway? Enough to break a few windows at the Pentagon or scorch paint on the 14th Street Bridge, maybe.

Now if he were more serious, his target would be a full-scale aircraft on approach or taking off at the Washington airport.

As LETHALFORCE says, he will be prosecuted, and it could be an interesting case.

Rezwan Ferdaus: The Drummer Accused Of Plotting 'Drone' Attack On D.C. | TPMMuckraker

Rezwan Ferdaus: The Drummer Accused Of Plotting 'Drone' Attack On D.C.

Ferdaus, nicknamed "Bollywood," was the original drummer of the Goosepimp Orchestra when the band formed in 2004 until he "moved on to become a devout spiritual practitioner,"
That article confirms in my mind that a lone lunatic was entrapped by US authorities; a waste of resources in my opinion. How many .25 lb blocks of C4 could a model of a SaberJet carry? The interior is taken up by the propulsion system, and their attachment to the wings would disrupt the aerodynamics of the craft. The whole concept is a joke.

Now, a 1/4 scale Piper Cub has plenty of room inside. :)

(Maybe DHS/FBI will be calling me now.)
