To be matture India ought to support anyone / anything that the people of BD support.
Totally true. Foreign policy of a mature country is hardly tied to the counterpart's domestic politics. It's not Khalida or Hasina that makes much difference. In the end it's the national interest that determines foreign policy regardless of any ideology, or BD party or individual politician in power.

Turkey (another muslim country) for instance has witnessed reigns of various types, military or democratic, secular or pro-islamist... Its foreign policy basically follows the same pattern.

This pretty much caters for Chinese taste of "non interference in your internal affairs".

Change your glasses. I have always said one mlln illegals in addition to another million legally employed Indians. They send huge remittance back home - probably the highest from any single source.

We have started profiling them. The illegals are Hindu Bengalis who had migrated in 50's and 60's. Among the legals there is hardly any Bengali. They are employed for some skill / qualification.

Chinese firm signs $4.44b deal to build railway in Bangladesh

DHAKA - A State-owned Chinese company has signed a $4.44-billion agreement to build arailway via Bangladesh's largest Padma bridge.

China Railway Construction Corp Ltd (CRCC) signed the official construction contract with the Bangladeshi government on Monday in capital Dhaka.

Zhang Xuecai, deputy general manager of China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group CO LTD(CREEC) and Amzad Hossain, director general of Bangladesh Railway, signed the agreementon behalf of their respective sides.

Last month, the Bangladeshi government gave the final go-ahead to the Chinese company to start construction of the 215 km-long Padma rail link from capital Dhaka to Jessore district, 164km away from capital Dhaka.

CREEC was commissioned to construct the rail road for 247.49 billion taka ($3.14 billion). Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2022.

The total project cost would be met through China's government soft loan and from the government's own funds.

The rail link project also includes construction of 66 main bridges, 244 minor bridges, 14 new railstations and procurement of 100 passenger coaches, according to the proposal from Bangladesh's railway ministry.

It said trains will travel at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour on the link. The project will be built under the Trans-Asian Railway (TAR) project aimed at creating an integrated freight railway network across Europe and Asia.

This is also reportedly a project of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Unescap).

The Padma bridge will be double-decker with a four-lane road on the upper deck and a broadgauge single railway track on the lower deck.

A portion of the rail line reportedly will be up and running by 2018, when the Bangladeshi government presents the much-publicized infrastructure project to the public, as the Padma bridge can be used by both road and rail.

In December last year, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the main works of the country's biggest Padma Bridge project by unveiling its foundation plaque.

Prior to the inauguration of the main bridge's construction works, she unveiled the plaque of the river training works, the second most costly component of the $3 billion project conducted project conducted by one of the largest international companies, Sinohydro Corporation Limited.

Hasina said the bridge will shorten travel time between capital Dhaka and the country's southern region, boosting entire trade and economic activities.

Experts say the bridge when it comes into operation in 2018 will ease pressure on the country's premier seaport in Chittagong, 242 km southeast of capital Dhaka, as it will bolster the second largest Mongla seaport in Bagerhat district, 178 km southwest of the capital city.

In June 2014, the Bangladeshi government awarded China Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited a $1.55-billion contract to build core structure of the Padma Bridge project which is to be completed in four years.

The 25-meter-wide and 10-km-long bridge will be built over Padma River, one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh.

About 6.15 km of the bridge is being built over the river while the remaining part on both banks.Apart from connecting nearly 30 million people in Bangladesh's southwest region to the rest ofthe country, the bridge will enhance regional trade and collaboration along the Asian highway No1 and the Trans-Asian railway network.

The bridge is among the six projects that are under direct supervision of the Fast Track Project Monitoring Committee headed by Hasina.

China sends first span of Bangladesh's largest Padma Bridge

DHAKA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- First Made in China span for Bangladesh's largest Padma bridge has reached the project site.

The 150-meter span weighing some 2900 tones was made of steel plate with 20-80mm thickness in a Chinese factory.

Obaidul Quader, Bangladesh's road transport and bridges minister, said all the 41 spans for the bridge will gradually arrive from China.

Regarding the bridge's construction progresses, Quader said 37 percent of the works have been done.

The first span will be put on the bridge pillars by the end of the year, he said.

His ministry said in a statement Monday night that from now on one or two spans will arrive from China every month.

Bangladesh can become whatever they want.
But not at the cost of antagonizing India and her interests by myopically believing that India is robbing off its waters. Bangladesh can be good ally/partner. A country which shares 75% of its borders with India should utilize it.

Bangladesh is in an enviable position today and could find it's growth & stature skyrocketing if it plays it's cards right, for this there are a few key things it needs to understand and apply!
1) It must understand it needs to cultivate positive relationships with Both China and India, it can take a clue from how India is cultivating relations with the US without compromising significantly on relations with Russia.
2)It must realize it's going to be a Junior Partner in both Relations, it must make it's peace with that.
3)It must realize that by 2030 India will be a 22$Tr economy while China will be a 46$Tr one, it must plan how to invite investment from both without antagonising either.
4)It needs to relaize trhat from the point of national security it's fate is tied to india due to Geographical reasons, it needs to integrate itself into the Indian Security setup to multiply it's defence capabilities manifold.
5)It needs to realize that it has key civilizational similarities with India and as such can further boost it's prospects with this future hyperpower by boosting these ancient ties!
6)It must realize the leverage it holds over India vis a vis transit links to the Indian Northeast, it needs to use this geographical advantage to it's own benefit without antagonising India, the development of these links would allow it to quickly integrate itself into the Indian Trade setup which will boost it's own economy.
7)It must realize that on the Maritime sphere India is a far closer partner to it that China can ever be simply because of geographical distances, it needs to build closer relations between it's own military & the Indian one.

Xi arrives in Bangladesh for state visit after China, Cambodia vow to cement time-honored friendship

China to be top investor in Bangladesh’

China will be the top investing country in Bangladesh as the current relation between the two countries reaches a level that has never been better and closer in terms of economical, political and technical, said Chinese ambassador in Dhaka Ma Mingqiang

“Bangladesh’s garment exports to China market rose by 30% year-on-year while investment possibilities of China are also high in Bangladesh,” said Ma Mingqiang.

Commenting on the investment potentialities, he said: “China will be a major investor. I do believe it will be the number one investor in Bangladesh.”

In the last fiscal year, Bangladesh earned $341bn exporting clothing products to China while Bangladesh’s exports to China stood at $808m against import of $9.64bn.

The Chinese president’s upcoming visit indicates rising extent of cooperation and tangible benefits for the two peoples, said Jinping adding that the relationship of the two countries is “in such a level that had never been better and closer in terms of economical, political and technical.”
Farooq Sobhan, president of Bangladesh Enterprises Institute, said the Chinese president’s upcoming visit will focus on infrastructural development projects.

He said in seven projects of power and energy, China may invest $7.7bn while it will invest about $6.6bn in roads and bridges projects.

Farooq Sobhan said: “Bangladesh may see $30bn investment in the coming years. In next two years, we will see drastic transformation in infrastructure.”

“And the objectives of the Chinese investment is to enhance capacity and export to the world from Bangladesh,” he said.

This will benefit India as well
1)Increasing economic growth & jobs should help contain islamic radicalism in Bangladesh .
2)Increase in number of jobs in Bangladesh should cut down the number of people looking to migrate to India often illegally.

This will boost the BBIN network and as India & Bangladesh further integrate into each other's economies it'll boost the economy of the Indian Northeast as well.

India is a massive nation. It should quit being petty and give BD its fair share of water. In this respect Indira Gandhi was admirable. So was Morarji Desai.
