Bangladesh plans $100m madrassa reform programme

    The Bangladeshi government is planning to integrate thousands of madrassas - or Islamic religious schools - into the mainstream education system.

    In a $100m reform package, it wants to introduce a new syllabus to the institutions from next year.

    Bangladesh has two types of madrassas - one sponsored by the government and the other financed by donors.

    A few years ago there were concerns that some madrassas could be encouraging militant and hardline Islam.

    The discovery of huge arms cache in a madrassa in 2009 in a remote village in the district of Bhola triggered fears of rise of militant Islam in Bangladesh.

    Since then the government has taken a tough stance on militancy and leaders of many hardline groups have been arrested.

    "As part of the new education policy we want to bring modern education to the madrassas side by side with the traditional madrassa education," Bangladeshi Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told the BBC.

    "We want to introduce subjects such as English, Bengali language, mathematics and information technology [to the madrassas]."

    Bangladesh currently has two types of madrassas.

    The Alia madrassas are sponsored by the government and Qaumi madrassas are financed by donors from inside Bangladesh and abroad.

    "The new plan will apply only to the Alia madrassas and we are still in talks with the Qaumi madrassa officials to develop their institutions. We want the Qaumi madrassas also to introduce modern education," Mr Nahid said.

    Officials say there are around 16,000 state-sponsored Alia madrassas in the country with around 5.5 million students. They are under the Bangladesh Madrassa Education Board.

    'Modern education'
    In addition, there around 10,000 Qaumi madrassas, which have more than a million students. These institutions survive on private donations and do not depend on any state support.

    "We have asked the Qaumi madrassas to come out with their own proposals on how they want to relate their education to the modern system," Mr Nahid said.

    "Under the existing system it is not possible for the students of these madrassas to compete in any examination for government posts. We want them to be an Islamic scholar and at the same time a skilled person with a modern education."

    But the plans to revamp the madrassa syllabus have already attracted criticism from Qaumi madrassa officials.

    "The government wants to modernise Alia madrassas, which means religious education will be destroyed," Muhammad Abdul Jabbar, Secretary-General of Qaumi Madrassa Board, told the BBC.

    Bangladesh has already launched a programme to reform madrassas, including plans to introduce compulsory lessons in English and science in religious schools.

    If there are around 26,000 madrasas in BD, I can't even imagine how many are there in the failed state of pakistan? Any guesses 100000 or 200000?
    Sure, pakistani govt. says there are only 20000+ madrasas in their failed state, we all know that's a bull, that too with failed education system, bankrupt economy and increased demand for religious fanatics/loonies by pakistan's deluded army, the preference goes to quran/hadith reading schizophrenics than doctors, engineers etc (no harm happens to the children to the elite class, as children of the elite/army goes to US, UK and west to study and work, they don't stay in pakistan)!!

    ^^ Partially, the elite class students also go through the same curriculum set by isi and their loony army, atleast when they are in high school! Hence the trickle down effect even in elite class, they carry the same delusional baggage of horrendously hilarious/concocted subjects such as "pakistan studies" and "islamiyat".

    Personally, I do not buy the Saudi funded research conducted by their cronies on madrasas being the center of education in the failed state pakistan and it is the educated class which goes - Kaboom (atleast not in pakistan). This may be applicable in the west where in-house radicals are produced by pakistani families (and like minded jihadi communities) with west sponsored/donated/funded education. Indeed, with fake notion of grandeur and superiority which is not supported with facts, create frustration and inferiority complex in islamic pakistanis; hence, they turn to islam to seek answers to questions such as - why they are not ruling the world, when they were destined to so, that too written in their islamic books; why they are not respected when they should be, as according to them the only qualifying criterion is being a muslim or islam; how come they are thrashed in every war time and again; why they are so desperate in all works of life, making them look miserable and pathetic et al. To seek answers regarding their mumbo-jumbo fantasies cum prophecies (which are nothing more than written BS to instigate/motivate illiterate arabs and neo-converts of 8th-10th century to attack prosperous non-muslims), they turn to islamism to find solace and to achieve a feel good factor, which in-turn fuels their inferiority complex whenever they encounter the liberal non-muslims and watch them succeed in all walks of life.

    In short, islamists in particular pakistanis who are worthless and love to live on zakkat/bhik, find it imperative to prove and satisfy their downtrodden egos, that the only qualifying factor to achieve greatness could be islam and not hard-work/progress/co-existence/development/modern-education/democracy; therefore the result is complete mass-dementia, schizophrenia and frustration among pakistanis, which prompt them to go kabooom and take revenge (in the most savage style)!

    Very well done i would say to the BD govt. It was time they pulled up their socks. Modern education will help that country come out of the extreme poverty.

    Bangladesh already has a very formalised madrassa structure under the GoB purview which would comprise majority of the 20,000 madrassas. And these include subjects like English and Computers as well.

    The problem is when madrassa education is politicized with a particular objective. In Pakistan's case, it was either anti-India near Kashmir or anti-Soviet on the Afghan border. Or the Iran-Saudi cold war were anti-wahabbi or anti-shia line was taught and drilled in students and then used as recruitment centers to fight in wars. And nowhere other than Pakistan has this been done in the worst way possible.

    Also, I agree with Dark_Prince. There is some excellent scholarly work done by Christine Fair on support for militancy in Pakistan for various groups. For India centric groups in particular and militant groups in general, she found no direct correlation with poverty or even religiosity. Ironically but not surprisingly, those people who felt Pakistan was doing better than India economically (this study was done in 2007) were MORE likely to support India cetric groups. And the poor both urban and rural disliked militants the most.

    So poverty and religiosity in general are poor predictors for militancy. The Pakistan studies subject which is taught from Grade 1 all the way to post graduate level as compulsorily and even in defense colleges seems to be a better indicator although someone should do research on that too. In other words, a rich, clean shaven middle class Pakistani that enjoys his whiskey and has studied to graduate level in Pakistani system is more likely to support anti-India militant groups than a poor bearded Pakistani who avoids alcohol is a daily wage earner with no formal schooling being taught on "Pakistan studies" and Two Nation theory philosophies.
