Bangladesh receives last of five patrol vessels built with China - IHS Jane's 360

The Bangladesh Navy (BN) commissioned the last three of its five indigenously built Padma-class patrol craft on 15 December 2013. BNS Aparajeya , Adomya , and Atondro were received at Chittagong in a ceremony presided over by Bangladesh's president, Abdul Hamid. They join lead ship Padma and Surma , which were commissioned on 24 January and 29 August 2013 respectively.

The 270-tonne full load boats are 50 m long and can reach a top speed of 23 kt. Their armament includes four NORINCO twin 37 mm naval guns and two 20 mm guns. IHS Jane's understands that all five vessels will be deployed at the BNS Titumir base.

Bangladesh reported to have signed submarine deal with China

Bangladesh reported to have signed submarine deal with China - IHS Jane's 360

Bangladesh has concluded an agreement with China to purchase two Type 035G Ming-class diesel-electric submarines, a Dhaka-based news agency reported on 21 December.

The deal, said the New Age newspaper, is valued at BTD16 billion (USD206 million) and will call for the submarines to be delivered to the Bangladesh Navy by 2019.

Citing unidentified government officials, the newspaper said the procurement project is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Finance and that funds for the purchase will be sourced from state budgets in fiscal years 2013-14 until 2017-18.

    COMMENT
IHS Jane's was unable to contact a spokesman at the Bangladesh Ministry of Defence to confirm the report.
