India is not a banana republic or Pakistan where the police can decide who should be killed or who shouldn't. Its only the authority of the courts to decide wether the person is guilty or not and then only they can decide what the quantum of punishment should be. This person was a suspect who had not been convicted.

As it is, Indian police has a very pathetic conviction rate of 30-35% in terrorism cases which means that most terror suspects are NOT convicted but still have to spend 5-6 years in jail because of the slow pace of judicial process. No Muslims says that DON'T punish terrorists. All they want is a fair trial as per law and proof of their conviction. Cases like these further diminish the credibility of the Indian police among Muslims who are going to be the biggest asset if there is going to be a terrorist plot in the future and prevent it by tips from the community.

The most concerning fact is that Qateel was in judicial custody and in a high security prison cell. This indicates tthat without the prison official's compllicity this could not have happened. The other issue that comes up is that he was killed just before he was being moved to another jail.
Again, even Qateels' parent who claim he is innocent say that if he is guilty let the courts decide his punishment and convict him. No one is saying let the those people involved in terrorism go scott free. But this is again a blow to building confidence between the police and the Muslim community.
The police had him for six months and about a month and half ago Mumbai ATS took custody of him. While the relatives got to meet him before Mumbai ATS took over, after that he had no contact.

Not allowed to meet Qateel, allege relatives

^^ Not only police...but even the "specially" formed agencies like NIA have started loosing credibility , even among the Hindus, and have become , more or less, agencies for political witchhunt and less of actual federal investigating agency.
