LUCKNOW: The ongoing spat between Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and Jama Maszid Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari has not only divided Muslim clerics and Muslims leaders within the party but is now also taking shape of a crisis for the newly elected SP government headed by Akhilesh Yadav.

A day after clerics of Darul-Uloom-Deoband criticised Azam Khan for his diatribe against Bukhari, on Tuesday, an Islamic seminary Darul-E-Mazhar Isam in Bareilly issued a fatwa against Bukhari, asking him to work for the well being of the people and his relatives. Deobandi and Barelvi Muslims differ on several Islamic interpretations.

Also, while some SP Muslim MLAs and leaders who are opposed to Azam Khan met Bukhari, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav continued to maintain an intriguing silence over the issue, leading to speculations that he is trying to cut Azam Khan to size. An angry Azam Khan has retaliated by saying that he expects the party and senior leaders to defend him.

The spat started last week when Imam Bukhari's son-in-law Umar, who lost assembly elections, was nominated by the SP for the legislative council. The Imam asked his son-in-law to withdraw nomination and criticised Mulayam for nominating only one Muslim candidate. He said that Muslims should get more representation as promised before elections.

Mulayam tried to pacify Bukhari by offering ministership for his son-in-law. But Bukhari retaliated by saying that the SP relied too much on Azam Khan by assigning him the minority welfare ministry. Questioning Azam's standing among Muslims, he also said that that Muslim welfare departments have been given to Azam, leaving nothing important for others.

Azam Khan struck back by saying that Bukhari has no mass base but wants his brother to be nominated for the Rajya Sabha and ministership for his son-in-law. He also challenged Bukhari to contest an election to check his popularity. Azam also advised the Imam to confine himself to issues related to the religion and stay away from politics.

Azam Khan and Bukhari have a long history of animosity. Political analysts say that the spat between Azam and Imam is actually a war of supremacy between two rival Muslim groups in the SP. Some in the party also see Azam as a threat to Akhilesh Yadav because he has said several times that he owes allegiance only to Mulayam.

Both should be out of politics, but Bukhari espicially so. He is the typical media religious cleric who has no support base but gives this impression of having a huge one.

AS per reports today Azam Khan has taken a back seat as MS Yadav was seen to be inclined towards Bhukari. Bhukhari is still maintaining that Umar would not be standing for the elections.

ejazr, I agree with you. This gentleman should concentrate on his spiritual role, but has shown more interest in politics. He is always available for the highest bidder.

This is all drama created by few SP politician. As per various internal report, Azam Khan is serious threat to Akhilesh Yadav. Azam Khan with his loyalist may claim the post of CM in future. Mulayam wants to control and side-lined Azam khan. He supporting Bukhari indirectly to counter Azam. Even Azam knows this very well that's why he said "He expect leaders to support him on tussle with Bukhari.

azam khan is a goonda and also communal.

when result were being declared sp had already got most seats and he along with his goons went to nearby constituency counting station and ordered a recount even though bsp candidate had won on gun point and slapped the election commission chap there. it was recounted 3 times to increase sp candiadates vote. the congress candidate votes were transferred to him. mayawati then interviened and media was on its way so they didn't go further but they made sp chap come second.
