i dont want india to be aggressive but altleast defensive,if it was someone vvip or politician life, will our government keep his eyes shut???
Buddy it is high time India is aggressive. Shows tiny and failed states whose the boss in the region. If they threaten to align with China, let them. Then they will also get the punishment for supporting them during a conflict. How long do you think we have to take the blackmail from every single stupid country around us? Bangladesh in 2001, Pakistan since last 60 years, China since last 40 years, now Sri Lanka and soon we will see Maldives also threatening to take over Lakshadweep and Kerala if we sit with this spineless government.

Why don't we just invade Sri Lanka, create an independent pro-Indian state of Tamil Eelam, and "accidentally" destroy Hambontata port while we're at it.

Sri Lanka is no Pakistan. They have no nuclear shield and PLAN does not have the capability (yet) to help them. We should do this before China develops blue-water capability.

CHENNAI: Voicing concern over alleged attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday asked the defence force of that country not to open fire on the Indian fishermen but apprehend them if they had done something wrong.

"There is no point in shooting them (Indian fishermen)," he told reporters after meeting Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi at his residence to discuss the issue.

Mukherjee asked the Sri Lankan Navy to desist from opening fire on Indian fishermen and said if they (the Indian fishermen) had done something wrong (like crossing International Maritime Boundary Line), they should be apprehended and due procedures followed. (Read: Another Tamil Nadu fisherman brutally killed by Lankan Navy)

The Union minister said he had assured Karunanidhi he would take up the matter with the foreign ministry, which in turn would raise it with Lankan authorities to ensure such incidents did not recur.

"I am told that in the last 10 days two fishermen (from Tamil Nadu) have been killed. We have good relations with Sri Lanka and are helping them," Mukerjee said.

In a fresh incident of attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Straits, one person was killed on January 12 when Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at three fishermen, who put out to sea from Jagadapattinnam near Pudukottai.

India had reacted strongly to the killing of an Indian fisherman in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy on January 12, saying such incidents have no "justification" and asked authorities in the island nation to "desist" from use of force.

Tamil Nadu fishermen have complained of frequent attacks by the island republic's navy, prompting DMK, an UPA coalition partner and other political parties in the state to demand an end to such attacks by taking up the issue strongly with Sri Lanka.

Mukherjee is in Chennai on a one-day visit to attend some official functions.

Really ? Are we now going to swallow such shits from stupid nations around ?

If we cannot flex our muscles in subcontinent, then the prospects are very dull for the future.

Really, Indians dying in the hands of Sri Lankan soldiers?!! What nonsense is happening? If these bloody Sri Lankan can kill Indians while India is so powerful and they are so powerless, wonder what would have happened if the roles were reversed? Its high time to show these petty nations, who the boss of the region is...

Do that we can kiss our International Good rep and chances of the permanent UNSC seat good bye....
Diplomacy is enough to keep the lankans at check they won't push the situation too far as they know that we can impose our will on them when ever we want to...
The dropping of supplies over the Jaffna peninsula is an example of this...

It's stupid to kill a poor fisherman, even if he has crossed international waters. Crossing over into SL waters might be unintentional, the killing of the fisherman is not. SL navy could have warned the boats to back off.

IOR is our backyard and it's time to put the message across. An eye for an eye, it's time the IN takes out a whole SL navy ship.

Another Tamil Nadu fisherman brutally killed by Lankan Navy

NAGAPATTINAM: Another Tamil Nadu fisherman was killed in a brutal manner on Saturday night by the Sri Lankan Navy off Vedaranyam coast in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.

This time though, a young fisherman was dragged into the sea with a rope tied around his neck by the Lankan naval personnel. Only 10 days ago, another young fisherman had been killed mid-sea by Lankan naval personnel.

State fisheries department officials said N Jayakumar (27), his brother A Senthil (25) and A Rajendran (55), all from Pushpavanam village had ventured into the sea on Saturday morning in a fibre boat.

They had cast their net in the evening and were fishing south east of Kodiakkarai coast when a Sri Lankan naval vessel approached them around 11 pm. The Lankan naval personnel ordered the fishermen to jump into the sea. Rajendran and Senthil jumped immediately. But Jayakumar hesitated as he had lost two fingers in his right arm during the 2004 tsunami making it difficult for him to swim in the sea. Even as he was pleading with the Sri Lankan naval personnel, they entered his boat, tied a rope around his neck and pushed him into the sea. "Holding the other end of the rope in their boat, the Lankan naval personnel had dragged him for a while in the sea. Later they had asked the other two fishermen to take Jayakumar into the boat and left the place," a fisheries official told TOI.

By the time Rajendran and Senthil pulled Jayakumar into the boat, he was found dead. S Vivekandanthan, assistant director (marine), department of fisheries said they were waiting for the postmortem examination report.

"According to the fishermen, Jayakumar was thrown into the sea with a rope tied around his neck and was drowned to death," he said.

Meanwhile, in Chennai, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, who called on chief minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday morning, told reporters that he would take up the matter with the external affairs ministry.

"We have been helping the Sri Lankan government. There is no justification for what they are doing. If our fishermen have done anything wrong, there is a due procedure," he told reporters after the meeting Karunanaidhi at his residence in Chennai. (Read: Pranab asks Lankan navy to desist shooting Indian fishermen)

RMP Rajendran Nattar, district president of Indian National Fishermen Trade Union said that it has been a regular practice of Sri Lankan navy to throw fishermen into the sea if they refuse to part with their fish catch. Only on January 12, a fisherman from Jagathapattinam in Pudukottai was shot dead by the Lankan Navy.

SL Navy and its government, very well knows that India under its present GOI is week and spineless, moreover, this GOI is proudly living under the clouds of corruption and blatant loot, and does not posses any balls to react and create some international issue till the common man of this nation is dying, 26/11 is one such example. Further, we can expect this type of ass spanking from all of our neighbors in near future, indeed looking at present situation and top it up with Pranab Mukherjees' remarks, I am rest assured tomorrow even Maldives will bitch-slap us and we will be sending them dossiers after dossiers!!

China did just that and in response what happened? Most of Asia is against it. I think the Solution here is to allow Sri-Lanka to invest heavily in India through business and Vice versa where India invested heavily in SL so we become dependent on each other and so we can control them economically. Also remove any Visa restrictions and build bridges and improve people to people connectivity and improve trade so that they become very dependent on us on the long run and they cant dare move away from us. We should have also opened up military support and made them dependent on Indian hardware.

To yell and be confrontational like an immature mad man like Iran will gain no freinds. Even the Arabs want them destroyed. We have to use brains not brawn's like an brutish ape.

The chances of that happening is not even zero....it is less than that in minus figures which means there is more chance of sri lanka invading whole of India and failing.

Every single country in the world in our place would have tamed pak, lanka, bangladesh and nepal long ago.....this is a country full of pacifists and people like you and me and others in this forum are a rare commodity in India.

For what joy??We gain nothing by being hyper aggressive. It is better to make them dependent on us by using economic ties and diplomatic pressure.

Shows tiny and failed states whose the boss in the region.
I think the already know that no need to restate the fact..

If they threaten to align with China, let them. Then they will also get the punishment for supporting them during a conflict.
Getting the small countries in the IOC on our side is good for us, letting them go to the Chinese side will only increase their chances of putting pressure on us diplomatically as well as by under hand measures, every countries support we loose is a reduction in winability in a war in the IOR

What kind of economic ties do you have in mind, India just a month ago gave SL navy millions of dollars and they have thanked us by killing two of our fisherman and what does the govt do in response? Nothing.

If a nation isn't capable of defending its own people, then what other purpose does it have? UN seats and Super power status are useless if your people are dying, day-in and day-out.
